yep, hanballing it away, kicking it too, throwing the ball 10 metres past the player with the free, it was obvious but they got away with it every time.

That handball one was the one that annoyed me the most. Like, I don't think umpiring favoured anyone last night (we took our chances with some dodgy frees), but that is not the point. There were just some blatant decisions that were wrong and too many of them. I have more of a cricket background so the 'it always evens itself out' adage is familiar to me, but it never ****ing does. You can't replicate the momentum, where the free is, who gets it, etc. I get as irritated by shit umpiring that doesn't affect the result as much as I do about shit umpiring that does, because you know that, eventually it will effect an important result. The only way to stop that is by minimizing the shit decisions not shrugging your shoulders and saying 'oh well at least it didn't effect the result'. I don't know another sport in the world where the rules change week to week without telling anyone.

We had 62 inside 50s against Sydney. Like us tonight they defended well.
completely different way we went about it though, v sydney it was slow chippy rubbish that gave the forwards no chance, even though we got the ball inside 50 it was very easy for sydney to set up get the numbers back and counter attack with ease. v hawthorn it was fast attacking play, when we did get it inside it gave us every chance to score, the forwards looked better because of the way we moved the ball. the way port have gone about it the last 2 years is fast efficient play up forward, thats our style, thats our game. we went away from it in the first two weeks but it is back, and we will be better for it.

"It was the best of times it was the worst of times" Charles Dickens. A Herculean performance considering the situation at hand.
1) Playing the reigning premiers at near full strength, who are undoubtedly one of the most dominant units in the modern era.
2) Lobbe, Hartlett, Wingard, Trengrove, Ryder & Gus have all had interrupted preseasons which have hindered their output.
3) Playing injured key runners in White & Polec who are obviously not fully fit.
4) Our best two clearance players are both on the sidelines, one elite the other not far away.

If we can hold the line for the next month or so, it should set us up for a big second half of the season.

great win lads!

Apart from the obvious consistent contributors in our team, I thought Aaron Young continued to take the 'bull by the horns' regading his opportunity, he does most things very well and has suprised me at how much he likes the hard stuff.

I think Kane Mitchell made some telling contributions at important times of the match too, his mark in the 3rd quarter, albeit missed goal, was great work and he had a number of good tackles. Krakouer looks to be a gem of a pick up.

As for Pittard, love your work mate!!

Nailed it! Couldn't have said it better myself!

I just have to say I watched this game on the telly (woe is me!) and had to endure that fat muppet commentator (I refuse to know his name till he actually aquires some real knowledge about football) OMG he would not shut up with "the Hawks any minute now are going to pile on the goals" and the "Hawks can still win this"comments throughout the WHOLE game. Didnt say anything about Ports performance and as we know didnt name a single player of either team because lets face it he doesnt know ANY players from any team. His fellow commentators must hate him he gets paid the same as them and they do all his work Im pretty sure he turns up probably doesnt even know the teams playing till he gets there. SACK HIM!!!
I know right I think he use to play for Richmond but I'm not 100% sure

Much needed win and the 4 points against Hawthorn is invaluable. A game of two halve no doubt. The thing that disturbs me the most is Port had no idea in dealing with the second halve onslaught. I hope Ken&CO develop some strategy to deal with some of the obvious dumb footy that we engaged in at this time. They literally just walked all over us, i know we were tiring but Hawthorn were on the field for just as long the kicks out of defense straight to the opposition was disturbing and no ability to put attacking pressure on the opposition. Come on Ken you can do better than that!

What a day to remember! I'm not sure there would have been too many Port supporters out there who legitimately thought we would win tonight against an in form near full strength Hawthorn line up. This club just keeps finding ways to prove the doubters wrong, myself included. I didn't think we could do it without Ollie and Robbie but what a way to do it.

As we know it was a tale of two halves really. That first quarter, im still speechless. I don't know how to describe it. I said late last year that the first quarter vs Richmond in the final will go down as one of the all time great quarters of footy played by a Port Adelaide team. Well that was against a spent, average Richmond line up. We beat that quarter tonight in the first, coming up against a red hot Hawthorn line up. I doubt anyone in the ground expected what we saw in that first quarter. Incredible midfield work, great at the stoppages just getting the ball forward again and again, wonderful set up across half back and then the party time that was the forward line. It was Port Adelaide pr0n. No other way to describe it. To absolutely smash them in the middle whilst missing our two best inside midfielders, wonderful effort and wonderful leadership by the likes of Boak, Ebert & Cornes in there.

:hearts:

Apparently that was the biggest inside 50 discrepancy for a losing team since the stat has been recorded. Mark that win down to our defence and our talls. Carlile kept Roughead to his most ineffective game in recent memory. Hombsch and Pittard cut off every attack that went near them. Schulz was kicking them from everywhere. Ryder is a ruckman, a KPF and a midfielder all rolled into one. If there was a stat for 'clutch intercept marks' Westhoff would be leading the competition since Hinkley took over.

It's been an astonishing month. I'd have taken 2-2 at the start of the year. Hands down.

Like I said in another thread, we're actually one up on where we were in the corresponding fixtures last year. We'll be two up if we win the away Showdown.

also woundnt have happened if clarko just walked away

Nah, that's bullshit. Clarko was trying to walk away and the guy followed him.

Hodge was a terrible caricature of himself last night. Was allowed way too much laterally by the umps based on his reputation. First half of his career he was an excellent player , but the last few seasons he really has been terrible and wouldn't get away with half the crap he does if he didn't have the rep he does.

Cringed reading this. No need for the sour grapes.

Bloody relieved. The high of watching us play the most beautiful football I have ever seen for that first quarter and a half was almost offset by that lackluster effort to finish the game. Somewhere around half time the witches hats got a paint job.

Though the witches hats comment is a bit unfair. Our backline worked their collective arses off in that last quarter and did bloody well to hold off the brown and gold avalanche. Alipate's defensive performance was utterly gold class, Roughead can hurt you in so many ways so to hold him to zero scoreboard impact in spite of his versatility is an outstanding effort.

Ryder's first half was everything we were hoping for.

Just finished watching that first quarter again. When we are on, we are better than any other team in the competition.

Yep.

That's how we can beat teams like this. We have bursts of absolute god mode football that can't be stopped.

We just need to have them more often and limit the damage the other way when we're off. Even though we hung on, I felt like it would have been really good for our guys going forward if we could have manufactured a steadier in that last quarter. Okay, we're tired, we're sore, Hawthorn are up and about, we need to move the ball down the field and kick a goal to seal this thing. We need to develop that.

Just got home from Adelaide. That first half was breath-taking, almost a carbon copy of the Richmond final last year. Disappointing to let them get so close, but we get 4 points over Hawthorn, a game we needed to win and did win. If you were offered an 8 point win last night before the game, you'd take it in a heartbeat.
