There's heaps of amazing music these days. Just from australia off the top of my head: party dozen, mildlife, glass beams, zoj, gut health, big yawn, Andrew gurruwiwi band, heaps of shit. Nick cave in his 60s still doing it, his discography is as impressive as anyone's.

Rock music is mad: idles, Viagra boys, pigsx7, heaps I'm forgetting. Heavy metal is unreal.

Jazz is more mainstream than ever, kamasi Washington, yusef dayes, keyon Harold, Robert glapser, amazing music being made. From aus: Barney McCall is unreal.

Hip hop incredible: Kendrick, Travis Scott, j hus and Stormzy from the UK. Soul music: Erika de cassier, that shit is endless.

Electronic music has never been better.

It's so good right now, I hate it. So much dope music being made.
Bookmarked.

So which of these can I go and hear live without being punched in the head by a teenager on an unwise drug regime? (I’m not the least judgemental about drugs, just want to avoid those who have been a bit too reckless with their choices)

Agree with Toump, heaps of amazing music being made, just a bit harder to find it than other eras as unfortunately pop music these days is significantly worse than other eras and the internet has kind of splintered music listening into smaller niches.

Meredith and Golden Plains festivals book incredible acts every year (many from Toumps list have played there) - so if you're looking for ideas for new music look at the lineups from those 2 festivals imo as a good starting point.

I'll let you know!

Birds Basement and Jazz Lab are nice places with an adult crowd, nice drinks and atmosphere etc. Can get rowdy in a very nice way, no teenagers doing drugs or anything like that. My mates will occasionally sneak off to put something up their nose but they're all approaching 50 lol.

HIGHLY RECOMMEND not getting the table at the front of Bird's when you see a trumpet player though... I saw Keyon Harrold there and the dude's in the front were getting pounded with saliva, was the weirdest thing to see.

Birds basement is great fun. I’ve been a couple of times but mostly don’t buy a ticket because I’m not familiar with the band playing. Clearly I need to diversify my listening habits.

Brass players are gross. Even if you aren’t within spit distance if you are onstage you have to avoid anywhere they are. They empty their instruments onto the floor and all end up with a spit pile the size of a billabong. And the funny bit is they all claim it’s not saliva, they are just removing “condensation from the valves of the instrument “. Oh sure

Last GP had heaps of mad stuff for me: Adigery & Pupil, Cymande, Boris and Jeff Mills were highlights. Meredith I'm gonna pass on this year, $500 for a ticket (+all the extras) is a lot for that lineup. Jamie XX would be sick though.

I can't explain how weird it was, this dude was playing his heart out on stage, beautiful lighting, lovely sound, incredible playing and then there's just this stream of spit landing over this well dressed-family in front of stage for like the whole concert. I dunno what they were thinking they were there the whole gig.

Wanted ab immersive experience?

Yeah me and mates volunteer every year so get free tix but I thought lineup was kinda average this year. The electronic music/DJs are kinda average and Jamie XX is fine but doesn't really get me going. It's always the best time regardless of setlist though but can understand not shelling out $500 for this one.

Last GP was really good, although my metal mates didn't like Boris' setlist and wanted more of their older sludgier groovier stuff. Cymande was incredible and I'm a big nostalgic Streets fan so loved it. Thought Mike's stage antics were hilarious personally. The Slingers last album was my favorite of last year so was great seeing them in the Sup.

When I was 14 a mate and I jumped a fence at a festival FNM were playing and ended up completely lost back-stage. First person we bumped into was Mike Patton and he gave us directions to get back to the crowd area so we didn't get booted out by security.

Now that I think of it, that's a really cool thing to do.

I had a similar thing happen years ago

A mate of our snuck in back stage at a festival.

We lost him and a few hours later we go watch Carl Cox play and there he is on the stage revving the crowd up for Carl Cox. Pretty impressive especially because he was quite under the influence as well
