Review Rd 12, 2014 - Bulldogs vs Lions

Wonderful to be reminded how good footy can make you feel. Wins like this one are important for development. We've been poor against Carlton and poor at Etihad in recent years but in two weeks we've got rid of those little hoodoos. Have had a few ales so excuse any rambling.

Positives:

- Stef Martin: Just fantastic. First ruck is where he plays his best footy but he hasn't had a real chance to show it off with us to date. Intensity and ruckwork were excellent and to beat Minson is a brilliant result.

- Lewis Taylor: Heart, composure and skill, so glad we have him.

- Pearce Hanley: Have noticed Pearce hitting the contest harder and tackling more in recent weeks, hope he keeps on the up and up. Is definitely finding a way to have a presence.

- Rohan Bewick: Basically the perfect role for him tonight and the team helped execute it perfectly. Definitely his best game for the club and one I hope he can replicate down the line. eth-dog would be happy!

- The defense: Clarke on Crameri, 1 goal. Maguire on Williams, 2 goals. Gardiner on Grant, 1 goal. Harwood on Dahlhaus, 2 behinds. Patfull on everyone, constant disruption and a goal for Patfull himself. A great combined effort from the backline and we really limited their scoring chances.

- Zorko and Green: Just have that x-factor combined with a hard edged and pretty consistent game that we've wanted for a while.

Negatives (outside of basic skill stuff):

- The whole last quarter: heart attack material. but we held on.

I can't think of too much else really! There's nobody I want to single out.

Just stoked. 2 in a row and off the bottom after a painful start to the year. Very happy to be a Lions supporter.

Lions crowd was pretty damn loud. If only everyone was following the same chant. We had the "Lioooooooooooooooooons!" one going on to the right of goals and the "BRISBANE *CLAP CLAP CLAP*" right in front of the goals. Good stuff.

Oh boy what a win! Loved every minute of that, though wouldn't mind closing out a game before the last 5 minutes one of these weeks!

I thought the same thing at the three quarter time when at the game. 28 points up and I thought if we get the first, it would be nice to sit back and savour the final term, but no, as usual our Lions gave us all heart palpitations and didn't make it easy, but hey, we won, so who cares now right?

Was fantastic to see the second tier players have such influential games.

- Martin was outstanding. He showed what he could do at Melbourne and produced that again tonight, great tap work and moves extremely well for a guy of his size.
- Shocked to see Bewick rack up so many possessions and actually be damaging - liking the move onto the wing, he adds another dimension to this upcoming midfield. Will be surprised if he doesn't get a brownlow vote.
- Beam's best game of the year by far, he's an excellent user of the footy so it was pleasing to see he got over 20 touches - hopefully next time he kicks straight, he could have been pushing for BOG if he kicked 3.0 instead of 1.2
- Taylor will be a jet. Had 14 touches before he went off and looked in real pain, returned and collected an extra 7 possessions in half a quarter - all damaging.
- It took him a few games but Harwood has finally returned to his 2013 form. Great shut down role, rebounded well and helped his team mates out defensively with a few big marks and spoils.

I would love to know what Gardiner said to Grant. He's turning out to be quite the menace. A rarity in a first year player.

When that fracas was going on, I was imploring one of our older heads in defence to push Gardiner away before he gave away a free. Obviously he didn't, but I watching the ump pretty closely and I thought Gardiner was very lucky not to have given away free in a position on the field which in all likelihood would have resulted in a Dogs goal.

Love Gardiner's aggression, but he does push the boundary. He also looks like he has a pretty solid bond with Goose Maguire too and definitely walks a little taller with him around.

Those press conferences were much better when you couldn't hear the journalists' questions.

Player X was great wasn't he?

Repeat.

Yet more evidence for my theory that journalists don't watch the games, they spend the evening in the bar and wander into the press conference with a stats sheet and a hell of a buzz.

Honestly, I think it was more likely to go the other way. From the vision it looked like Grant initiated the contact and certainly kept it going.

Tonight we as lions supporters witnessed a phenomenon which is has become a rarity in recent years.

Senior fringe players grabbing an opportunity with both hands.

Could not be more proud of Bewick, Martin, Harwood and a few others which escape my memory right now.

After a rocky start, things are starting to look up. Our senior players have stepped up as a whole and joined group of debutantes who have shown nothing less than 100% heart.

Best of all our game plan or synergy or whatever word the journos are suing at the moment is evident.

I love this footy club.

Yeah Darcy was ready to move on but Grant had a firm hold of his jumper.

Gardiner played it very well. He knows where the line is.

I was some distance away from it on the wing, but I thought Gardiner was the instigator, hence my concern. Glad that wasn't the case then.

wouldn't need to be much, got in a few scuffles last year (Grant)
watched Gardiner a lot for two years before he was drafted, he was always a menace ;)
thought Lewis Taylor was a huge bargain last year, kid is a freak and future gun

can anyone tell me what sort of role Mayes was playing? seems a bit quieter compared to last year

Just got hone from the game and I am genuinely excited about our on fied direction, things I liked tonight included:

Green's improvement in his work rate around the ground.
Aish, that boy is going to be a star.
General ball usage when on the attack.
The kids in general, can really build a side around them.

Brisbane do need to improve on their ability to wind down the clock, but that will come with time.

I thought tonight was Brisbane's best 4 quarter effort for the season.

I think come draft time at year end, whether we have pick 1 or 10, our first draft pick needs to be a key position, and even our second one, we have a good small crew but need to ramp up our efforts to improve our key position stocks.

Awesome win so good to be a lions supporter. Loved bewick zorko, martin and beams games. Also sorry if someone has asked this but what was the go with cooney being booed every to me he did anything ?

what was the go with cooney being booed every to me he did anything ?

He wasn't being booed, the Dogs faithful just call his name with particular emphasis on COON-ey when he got the ball, same as when the Roys faithful would call out ROOS' name or when Carlton fans would go WOOF when Ang Christou kicked the ball.

Can't wait to watch it tomorrow :)

Nice to see Beamsy rack the ball up a bit and saw his goal on the AFL website, always said he has a better boot then his brother.

Seeing a good overall team effort is what you want and I bet Leppa would be pleased to start seeing the gameplan working.

Go Lions!

Still on a high. I've seen each of our wins live this year. Love it! Fabulous work by those behind the goals tonight, you guys really made some noise! I was with the Liiiiiiiooooonnnnsss chant group. We wished we were closer to the big group. Sorry blynd_freddie , we headed in to the function and I lost you. Next time!

I love Dizzy. I really am surprised that a first year player can get under the skin of seasoned veterans and still own them on the day. Starting to see where he gets the tag as 'best defender in draft'. Absolute gem.

Really impressed with the guys that you didn't expect to have big games in Martin, Bewick and others.

Martin had shown signs at being a decent first ruck at Melbourne, but never looked like he'd be able to do that. Was sensational. Will be interesting to see if he can back it up against Mumford next week.

Bewick's run was brilliant. Looks like he has seriously worked on his kicking too. Loved his game.
