Has there been a more open even race for the premiership in recent times?? You can make a genuine case for any side in the top 8 on their given day topping any other top 8 side.

The biggest underrated smokey for the flag amongst those top 8 sides has to be collingwood tho. Knocked over carlton, melbourne, fremantle, and only narrowly lost to brisbane in brisbane by 7 points.

They are right up there with the rest of the competing sides.

Alot of this years race will come down to fitness and form at the right time.

Do we go in with a full fit 22 or do we have some major issues like a half fit duncan returning and no stewart? Or do we go in fully fit and it is melbourne this time underdone or get a flu wipe out their side for the week??

Has not been this exciting and an open race for many years now.
Agree, very open, unless the dees actually do play their best- it’s still a fair bit better than anyone else’s surely?

are they honestly that good tho?? we only lost to them by a kick after the siren at home with no stewart in the side. Was not a performance you walked away from thinking "wow, this side is invincible".

They had only gotten us by 4 goals earlier in the year as well.

they are good and pound for pound better than us, but i don't think it will take a 08 size stuff up to knock them over in a grand final. they are much more vulnerable than that.

Probably biggest key is to contain and marginalize their midfield, as their forward half is average at best. destroy the quality of the movement and connection inside fifty and you will go a very long way to beating melbourne.

Does this mean Higgins is done? Because god it’s been hard to watch
I did wonder last weekend if it was just a final run for Higgins as it was against his old mob

Yep, ok, probably agree with much of this. Prelim was a grim result though.
I expect our midfield to give them a better run for their money this time.

No sav or ceglar in the emergencies i hope means stanley will play..i shudder if hes a late withdrawal and we dont bring in another ruck to support blitz.

I'd say it was a bit of that, but the week prior against Richmond in the VFL he was one of the few that actually played ok & looked like he may be in line for a call up to the seniors if needed

If he does play out the season in the VFL, I think he'll look similar to Dahlhaus, where their AFL experience is noticeable & valuable addition in the field, they look that step above VFL level, but that doesn't mean they should be promoted to the seniors unless a last resort

2016 definitely was.

2020, with it being a Covid year and QLD hosting, felt very open. Port and Geelong fluffed their lines against Tigers but all three plus Brisbane were legit contenders that season.

I still only see 4 real contenders and then a couple of pretty out there smokeys right now. Melbourne still clear favourites until it's proven they can be dealt with in big finals.

The fact that two of Melbourne's biggest threats have proved frail in finals, and the other hasn't been in finals for a long while, doesn't help.

i do take the club at face value when they said they had a virus sweep through the team that week. i think the prior two results were alot more reflective of the difference between the two clubs. I don't read too much into the prelim margin.

they were a better team, but i wouldn't buy or read much into the margin that game.

we really do need to get a win over them thought after losing 3/3 to them last year.

Yep- spot on.
Quietly confident.

This is just my opinion, but i am not under the personal belief that sides have this magical switch that makes them play different football in a final compared to home and away games.

We see some pretty ferocious contested games of football all the time during the home and away season with top sides playing off against one another.

You will not find many finals games more ferocious and heated than our recent one against the tigers at the MCG.

You also do get alot of weak uncontested finals games too over the years..

I see finals as the same game plans and performances, except it is all the best sides facing off consecutively. Your just bound to get better games that stand out when you remove the shit of the bottom 8.

I dont think we see performances in finals that we didnt previously see from that side during the home and away season. It is just more a question of who is able to consistently replicate their best footy for 3-4 games in the finals to go all the way?

I dont really buy into the magic dust of finals style footy tho.

The big step up is in pressure applied. You can clearly see the difference in the manner in whi h played through themselves at the contest (E.g. Tackles hit harder)

The virus explains the 86 point shellacking, but as CS has been at great pains to point out, even fully fit, Melbourne wins and wins comfortably.

Im starting to get more interested by who’s named in the emergencies this week: Knevitt is a bit out of the blue, Neale still ahead of esava is a slight surprise as I thought they’d be looking to get one or two more games before finals so he’s primed as a ‘just in case,’ or even for tomorrow if Stanley doesn’t pull up, and no Higgins. Must be planning on using Narkle as sub.
One good thing ( but not sure if means much ) that Neale is named ahead of Esava

As expected. Miers is lucky (and narkle sub probably) but no one other than stephens is banging the door down and his ankle might still be iffy.

I agree but at least we got Neale there... I know its not a genuine ruckman but at least it's not going there with nothing...

i agree they win, they showed they were better beating us twice also during the HA, but nothing remotely to the tune of 86 points. our best footy virus free also would have been closer than that.

i disagree, take a look at that game against richmond a few weeks ago. That is about as ferocious and intense as it gets. Not much played in finals will top it.

I can see what you're saying but Richmond in particular I found to be a fairly mediocre H&A side over their reign but superb in finals. At time even Hawthorn, although they were a much better team full stop, lifted a gear in finals or especially grand finals anyway.

Brisbane and Geelong are two examples of great home and away sides of recent years but fairly mediocre overall in finals.

So it might not be magic fairy dust, but finals is its own mini season and the teams with real self belief lift a gear.

it is interesting you mention the hawks, because their brand of footy was probably the opposite of what you would call heated and contested. the hawks during their grand finals would move the ball poetically by foot and absolutely slice their opponents open from one end to the other in what was the most uncontested football you will see in any games. their grand finals against west coast and sydney you saw patches where the ball would zip everywhere by foot and the opposition couldnt even get their hands on it. in no slight way a heated or pressure game.

more specifically with us, i think we have tried an uncontested brand of footy over the years to compensate for a lack of defensive skills especially with turnovers, and we have not been quite good enough to pull it off like hawthorn pulled off their tripple premiership uncontested brand of keepings off footy.

Higgins and dahl are depth only they are not totally done but will only play finals if we get injuries to our best 22.
