Scott's presser:

- 'We expect Esava to play but it's not a guarantee' (hmmmm....)
- Parfitt will definitely be back in
- Unsure about Kolo's unavailability
- Menegola will play VFL next weekend
- Prospect of Cockatoo playing seniors this year - "he has a lot of VFL to play to convince us that he's physically ready"
- S. Selwood will play seniors 'in the next month or so'

So in other words he has NFI about anything.

That’s the problem with these pressers. He has been definitive in the past and then wrong so now he just qualifies everything he says, rendering it all meaningless.

We expect Esava to play but it's not a guarantee
Injury update: Ratagolea will have to pass Wednesday's main session in order to put up his hand
Parfitt will definitely be back in
Unequivocal

Unsure about Kolo's unavailability
Injury update: Kolo had mild symptoms early in the week with the Cats keen to see how he responds on Wednesday
Menegola will play VFL next weekend
Unequivocal
Prospect of Cockatoo playing seniors this year - "he has a lot of VFL to play to convince us that he's physically ready"
Common sense
S. Selwood will play seniors 'in the next month or so'
Nothing too difficult to understand

Meaningless? Not quite.

Glad you enjoyed it. Let’s see what unfolds on Thursday at 6:20pm, at 5:55pm on Saturday and in the weeks to come, and compare with those statements.

Scott's propensity to hedge his bets speaks more to the fact that you often can't make definitive calls on player availability until gameday or, at the very least, later in the week. Sometimes a player's situation is clear by the time Scott conducts his weekly press conference, and sometimes it's unclear whether they'll be able to get up in time for the game. It's only natural that there will often be times when he isn't certain about a player's availability.

Also a line like "we expect Esava to play but it's not a guarantee" isn't meaningless. Non-definitive answers aren't necessarily bereft of information. If Scott and the club are saying that Esava is likely to play but not guaranteed, that tells us he's probably looking good on the track but will need to pass a fitness test or whatever to be named in the side.

The Kolo argument both camps are right before this year he has started well but finished poor...this is his most consistent year

He plays well in defense but then they shift him around because they don't want to drop him as he is in form but they want to bring someone else in, so he is the poor bugger who gets played out of position - amazing what happens when they play him in his preferred position & he actually knows what role he will be required to play

Just like he said Sav was supposed to play last week but didn't :drunk:

I don't really know what people want him to say?
He can say Esava will definitely play, but then when he doesn't people will accuse him of funny business.
So he says he thinks Esava will play, but isn't sure, and still is accused of funny business no matter what the outcome is.

Exactly, and the other problem with making definite statements on a Wednesday is that you don't know what's going to happen between press conference time & game time - a player might pull up sore after training on Thursday, so not be in a position to play which wouldn't necessarily go down well if it had been suggested on Wednesday they'd be playing

He pretty much ruled him out, in fact.

That's a fantastic depiction of - Catch 22 - the football version :thumbsu:

Time for the MC to make a statement - 2 losses in the last 3 weeks.
I'm not saying go all Port Adelaide but may be time to drop an underperforming regular or two to highlight how unacceptable we are going?

I was just thinking something similar. For me, it would be something like:

OUT: one week "mini statements" followed by lame follow up efforts (a la Port).

IN: 2007-style post-North smashing (insert Saints for Richmond), followed by a similar run to the flag...

Not too much to hope for, right?
