There is only one naming option for this game :

The Scratcher Neal Cup.
Poor old StKilda , they were a dead set dumping ground for players where the orange warning light had come on , not much fuel left in the tank

Carlton sent plenty their also , Wow Jones , Kenny Sheldon , Peter McConville , did Marcou end up their as well .

However those blokes all got 3 votes at the Saints disco at Moorrabin on Saturday nights !!!!

Ah the Saints Disco in the 70's and early 80's. Fun times

Everyone seems confident we win this game, I think it’s going to be very close, trust me.
I don't think we are a shoe-in... It's a weird year and we will need to come to play and take nothing for granted.

Next week is already over... Just gotta get the job done this week.

It's time to lock in and not blow this chance for a guaranteed top 4 spot... possibly top 2.

Winning the week after a WA road trip is never easy.

You can be sure that Ross Lyon would consider it a successful season for the Saints if they disrupt our top 4 plans.

Sounds like no Sam until finals:

After missing the win against Fremantle with a knee injury, Sam De Koning has today had a minor procedure on his knee.

“Sam has been managing a knee injury, more particularly with his patella. He has had a minor procedure today and we expect him to miss one-to-two weeks," Johnson said.

“It is unfortunate for Sam, but he is ready to tackle his rebab head on. We look forward to seeing him back in the coming weeks.”

According to Champion Data, Mannagh has rated 'elite' across his last six games for AFL Player Ratings points (14.5 per game), contested possessions (8.2), pressure points (58.8) and tackles (5.8).

In terms of his AFL Player Ratings points – Champion Data's most definitive statistic to measure influence on a game – Mannagh's average of 14.5 rates just fractionally outside the top 20 players across the entire competition within that period.

Champion Data also points out that Mannagh rates 'above average' for disposals (16.2 per game), score assists (1.2), score involvements (5.0) and goals (1.2) since his impressive return to the Geelong side.

Mannagh's campaign has been an interrupted one. After making his AFL debut as a substitute in round one, he then played a full game in round two before being dropped to the VFL where he spent a large portion of his season.

But, despite that, his average of 12.7 AFL Player Ratings points across the entire year still ranks him No.2 among all forwards across the competition. Only Adelaide star Izak Rankine (17.3) rates higher for influence.

It also puts Mannagh clear of All-Australian contenders like Hawthorn's Dylan Moore (12.5), Geelong teammate Tyson Stengle (11.9), Melbourne's Kysaiah Pickett (11.8) and Brisbane's Cam Rayner (11.8) among general forwards.

A large part of Mannagh's influence is sourced through his pressure. Since his return to Cats coach Chris Scott's plans, his 58.8 pressure points per game mixes it with the League's best pressure players.

Should never have been out.

Must stay in.

I wonder if that fixes it or if he will require more surgery at the end of the season.

If it's only 1 or 2 weeks on the sidelines, I'm thinking this is to ease discomfort for now and get him through the finals

Then it's reassess things

Yeah my thinking too and with the bye at the end of rd 24 he has close to 3 weeks to recover for first final.

This is the type of game we usually lose

It had to be said 😩

As posted by others, Lyon will focus on out coaching our Chris Scott. Not close to the Beveridge success, please God?

Let’s look at Lyon’s style, who many, including me, detest.

“Considering Ross Lyon’s coaching style at both St Kilda and Fremantle, he was noted for enacting the most structured and defensive game plans in the league, with a particularly strong emphasis on the entire team applying defensive pressure when the opponent has the ball.

Throughout his career, his teams have regularly been amongst the best in the league for points conceded, if not the best – in 2009, when St Kilda won the minor premiership, they conceded only 1,411 points in the home and away season, 367 points fewer than the next best.

Lyon's game plan is not universally liked: many observers have criticised it as being "boring" or "ugly", compared to higher scoring, open game styles, employed by some other teams, or by teams from previous eras. Lyon has also been criticised, including by former St Kilda coach Scott Watters, for sticking to his game plan at the expense of having an effective forward structure.“https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ros...d.-,Coaching style, the opponent has the ball.

Fewer AFL coaches are as staunch in their belief in their coaching style.

There has to come a time when his stubborn determination becomes an impediment. Currently 14th on the ladder, Saints have Won 9 + Lost 12 + 98%. Year after year Lyon fails to fit the premiership standard. With four grand finals for only one draw + five preliminary finals for only three wins.

Fans will only tolerate a morose, dismal boring + low scoring style of footy if they win, they refuse to suffer it when they lose. With only one premiership in the 1966 VFL Grand Final, Saints’ fans are angry + frustrated by Lyon’s coaching.

On forums, Saints’ fans are venting:
“Right now we offer the viewing public a string of losses and zero entertainment.”
“What they’ve dished up so far in 2024 has been more quintessential Rossball: slow, methodical ball movement invariably ending in long balls up the line and 50/50 contests, and long bombs into a forward line built for pace and leading up rather than contested marking. The problem is that it’s coming with a playing group that is a far cry from the star-studded teams behind the 2009-2010 Saints and 2013-2015 Fremantle’s deep finals runs under Lyon, when if there was any doubt a player always had a Nick Riewoldt or Matthew Pavlich as a get-out option.”
“Lyon is the most boring coach once again - and it's suffocating the Saints' season.”
Other fans mention player injuries + a young team.

If we play: fast pace; high pressure; thumping tackling; superb disposals from Miers, Holmes, Zuthrie + Dempsey; heroic efforts from Dangerfield + Mannagh; solid DE%; high I50s; + kick goals accurately to ensure we win every quarter, we should win this game.

Win, we must!

Win by a good enough margin to improve
our %

Win definitively to secure a Top 4 position!

GO CATS 😻

Pressure points - probably the biggest crock in footy stat land, only behind the fox footy “pressure index”.

Nothing stats that can’t be explained and tell us jack shit.

Not trying to take anything away from Mannagh who has been excellent, but pressure points don’t tell us anything (unless they are from a drunk Fev on the mic at Brownlow night).

Was criminal he wasn't playing during the year.
Was banging on the table for him to get games and his form proves it.
Or….maybe he needed to improve on a few things which he did in the VfL which has then put him in the best place to succeed when he came into the team???
