He and Dow need to show more hunger to attack the player with the footy.
There are glimpses with Dow, and I think he'll be a good footballer. Another preseason and 20 games of footy under his belt will do wonders for him.

This.
Up to now it’s been ok (sort of), because we were getting players together. Although it’s still early days expectations are much higher.
Thought we’d win today so it hurts more
spot on

Unacceptable, confidence shattering performance. If not games like these, which ones will we actually win this year? Sydney are not much chop, at all.

Absolutely smashed in the ruck for the third week in a row. SOS has done a good job rebuilding the top end of the list but there are glaring deficiencies showing up every week (ruck, quality rebound off half back and small forward), any danger of addressing these? Why was Cottrell recruited again?

Jones superb on Franklin. Walsh terrific all day. I feel sorry for Cripps.

Normally I am depressed on losing. Not today. Our lads are growing. Four straight kicks and we win. We had the best set of leading marking forward play in many a long year now at times today. Two weeks if not three in a row some little bit more experience and resultant nailed shots and we are 3-0.

You are misreading the result. Today's football allows a side to lose by under 30 points and get towelled.
Carlton were smashed in uncontested football
We were smashed in the air
We kicked 1 goal in an hour of football.
That makes it impossible to win and the margin a statistic that reflects the swans age profile and dour style.
I could mount the case that a 4 qtr effort and a 6 goal loss would be a greater step forward

We need a tall wingman/HFF who has pace, can take a contested mark, and is good at ground level. We also need cunners, and a quality small forward or 2 who can make opposition defenders shite themselves when ball spills. So close, yet so far.

Lets Pick up a player Like umm, Charlie Curnow.

Does anybody really think we lost the game because Casboult missed an easy one and Harry was having trouble scoring?

We lost because for a 60 minute period our game plan went to shit, and had no situational awareness and evidently no new directives.

We should be far beyond this point.
You mean the two quarters where Longmire and his players tried to pretend they were St George Illawarra. I think we won the Australian rules part of the game at either end of that disgrace.
When we have enough large frames with 70 games in most of them we will belt them up for that.

He has a point. We need some small forwards badly

We need to be more competitive across the park for longer, we had opportunities today and we didn't convert, whether that be in front of goals or around the ground

Talent plays a huge role, Ed kicks 4, is that talent or experienced bigger body

Again I will ask, how does a coach miss easy goals and targets?

A bigger problem than missing easy goals and targets was that our intensity and structures and game plan (whatever it is) went completely missing for half of the game, just like the weeks before and just like the year before.

This easy missed shots shouldn’t have been the difference between winning and losing if we don’t continue to play only a half of football each week.

When you are such a young and inexperienced side injuries effect you more than most. Our ability to have Docherty Cuningham Charlie Lang Williamson McGovern Kennedy Jack Kruezer all fit and allow the younger players to play more around the fringes and also get rests and some VFL time is massive for development. In a lot of ways we are carrying 5-6 Under 18's each week and that makes it very hard

Had to wait a few hours after the game to calm down and dissect this disaster. Make no mistake Sydney were terrible today and yet we were never really in the contest.

We don’t have any excuses at all today. We can’t blame youth/injuries and we can’t blame the cattle or lack thereof. We played deplorable for 3 quarters and defensively we were terrible for 4 quarters.

The biggest issue has to be game plan and structures. How can Sydney transition the ball from one end of the ground to the other so easily and uncontested without us touching the ball? In contrast our attacks were all under pressure, hoping for a pack mark from McKay or Casboult. Nothing has changed over the last 5 years. Something has to change if we want to avoid another terrible season. The alarm bells should be well and truly ringing internally and if not then we continue to accept mediocrity. I expected to beat Sydney today but now I have doubts about Gold Coast next week. Maybe losing that will give us the wake up call we need.

Other observations:
-One of the worst one-sided umpiring displays I have seen. Bordering on cheating
-Cripps and Walsh are superstars who deserve better
-Weiters and Jones did extremely well considering how easily the ball was coming into defense
-Dow had a poor game but I’ve see enough to know he will be a gun
-Plowman needs to go as soon as Williamson is right. Maybe even earlier, he’s an absolute liability unless the opposition kicks to his chest unmarked.
-We should be past the days of Casboult. Would prefer any other tall on our list
-Lobbe tried hard but is no longer AFL level. Let’s pray that Kreuzer comes back next week
-I’ll give some of the younger guys a break for now but some of them should not be playing at AFL level

So frustrating to watch. Non-stop basic skill errors, poor decision making, no midfield apart from Cripps and Walsh.

We were never in control of any part of the game.

How many times did we see Sydney link up and run the ball from defensive 50, through the midfield and into the forward line? Many a time.

Our ball use is at such a poor level. We cannot execute simple plays, there's no team work.

It's a massive indictment on where the team is at when a 1st year player is your highest disposal getter.

We know the midfield talent is there, but when will they produce the goods?

So the gameplan was there for a half, but not the other half? Tell me how that is possible?

Young inexperienced players trying to build experience

Struggling to read some of the crap in here. People bagging Casboult should hang their heads in shame, simply bagging a name without watching the contribution is poor form.

We have 3 of our best players in Kreuzer, Doc and Charlie not in the team. Our 3 most experienced players in Murphy, Simpson and Daisy don't play in positions that hurt the opposition. The rest of the team are building nicely. It also hurts when one of you key forwards sits out the second half.

Take away a couple of dubious frees against and Plowman wasn't as horrible as some are pretending. We have some bagging our kicking efficiency as a team and other bagging Plowman because he is too careful with his kicks and that is the only reason his DE is good. If every player did that, we would win easily. I guess people are going to see what they want to see. Would be good if they waited until he played a shocker to lay the boots into him.

I see the Bolton bashers are also out in force. It takes time for a team to gel and it is almost impossible to make changes on the run with an inexperienced team thanks to the change in the runner rules. Watch the game again and tell me we would have got a better result with the team we has last season.

Could not DISAGREE with that more. That is just false

Just one example of many, but 4 of our players in front of the legend stand against 1 Sydney player and we lose the contest tells me what I need to know. I could go on but not worth it when we have so many green shoot positives from one game.....

and do a ....johny walker,,,,,,,keep walking, but dont ever return.
these blokes have been selected to play first eighteen for the carlton football club - you don't have to like their performances but drop the smartarse bagging, noob.......

Thought it was really good and kept us in the game when their bigger bodies took over. At times we could have been blown away and weren't. IMO it held up very well

im a BIT OVER ALLU FOOCKERS BLAMING THE BACKLINE,
ESPICALLY THE PLOW.

SOME or most of our one way running midfielders need to be accountable for there MAN... FFS

They do there job, Then The PlowMAN will do his...

Generally I agree with that theory but he's making basic mistakes too often that a player of his experience just shouldn't
