Raines was fantastic tonight. Still heart in mouth stuff with his disposal but no one can question his endeavour. Seems a good club man. Interesting to see it reported that Moloney was running laps of the oval at midnight. Clearly not injured. Good to see him doing the hard yards. Seeing the boys have a win without him might be the wake up call he needs.

He ran at 75% DE so it looks good

Did you see all the comments about his size from Dustin Martin? 'Loaf', 'whale' .. etc.. He has been looking a bit podgey over the last few weeks, my guess is he was pushing his skin folds and fitness 2 weeks ago, hence the sub, and he wasn't able to rectify it before this weekend.. Thus, running laps trying to loose a few kgs.. Not sure of this.. Just looking into the loaf and whale jokes, and being omitted with no injuries etc..

Very happy.

Zorko set it up, Aish stood tall under pressure in the second half.

Loved Reddan's game as well, Adcock best game of the year, Lester's game under rated severely IMO, West was great, Robbo continues to impress, Gardiner showed glimpses of why he was chosen, and Patfull was incredible.

Rapt for Leppa too. But that was one heck of a spray he gave in the last quarter I think it was. No need to be a lip reader!! :D

Interesting to hear leppa say the team won't consist of one dimensional players, and that he was happy that Raines at the age of 27 had embraced the challenge of working on the attacking side of his game, and that he would be hard to kick out of the team if he continues to play well.

Just think we all sort of assumed leppa just didn't rate Raines, when in fact he was working on different elements of his game. Hopefully he goes on and has a good year.
He's got to say something doesn't he. He can hardly say, I stuffed it at the selection table , which is what he did. Raines has always had an attacking side to his game. This is just Leppitsch being completely disingenuous. Look back through the Raines thread on Roster Watch and check out where he has ranked for average possessions for each season during his time at the Lions. We'll done Raines.

From what I gathered about leppas comments about raines it seems he knows that he can tag. But as everyone on this board knows his disposal leaves nothing to be desired and other than negating another player he is pretty useless. I think leppas plan is to get his attacking side of the game going (knowing his tagging is really quite good) then bringing him in to play on the outside for a few weeks. If he keeps his form I am expecting him to go back into tagging but now with the added attacking play that he has shown. Basically I think leppa in the next few weeks will put him back on the shut down role while also expecting him to be able to work off his opponent and be damaging with the ball in hand. Basically like Rockliff on Mitchell in round 1. I for one would be more than happy to see rains play that role

And we're off!

Was out but got to watch the majority of the game. Looks like a lot of our blokes played well tonight so the performance as a whole lifted. Good to scrap it out at the end there for a win.

Taylor looks like an amazing pick up for us as does Aish.

Raines had very average games most of the year in the ressies and has stepped up the last few. That's why he played tonight.

Hey Billy, turn on with the psychedelic peace lamp, it will help you to see clearly and have a look back through the Raines thread to see exactly why most of what you have posted above is off the mark. You are a pretty hip cat, so don't succumb to the 'lazy group think' of those who trot out the line that Raines has no attacking side to his game.

A few of our other experienced players have had FIVE WEEKS worth of average games in the Seniors this season and a couple of them stepped up too. That's a good sign.

Those cunning coaches, having set up this misleading narrative in all the reserves reports as well! I think you're seeing a conspiracy where there is none - just someone set a task by the coaches, who responded and then got rewarded.

Not a conspiracy dlanod, just poor player management.

The one thing I've always liked about Raines despite his questionable disposal ability is his ability to kick goals even when playing that hard tagging role.

Redden in an interview said that this year his focus was on his disposals. He's obviously worked hard on it and its beginning to pay dividends.

Hey kz how about instead of singling out one player a year you fancy.check out the whole team.
You seem to focus on one player a year for some reason.
It is a team game.

It's a very specific issue - whether Andrew Raines plays or not each week. He had a great game tonight, but he didn't change the outcome.

Leppa doesn't seem to be concerned about saving face in any interview he ever does - he's very blunt and realistic, even about he himself learning things along the way. It'd be worth considering that he did in fact see something he wanted Raines to improve on, asked him to do it ... and Raines has stepped up - just as Leppa suggested in his press conference.

Oh, and what a percentage boost!!

My Grades on the boys tonight

Adcock A - What a match from the skipper.. been waiting 6 round for it. Could of got an A+ but a few silly frees in there
Clarke B- - Good game from clarke, set up well defensively on stanley. struggled late but most did
Patful A - Shut down Riewoldt and could spark his season
Gardiner B+ - How good was his aggression to the ball, his bump and sheppard was amazing
Hanley B - Showed plenty of zip, was concerned about the hammy one bit, Got us going a few times in Q2
Polkinghorne D - Struggled, wasn't overly sure where he was playing and what the plan for him was
Mayes B- - Played off half back tonight, didn't do too bad with some big spoils. Much prefer him up HF drifting into midfield.
Lester B+ - Started very well. His kicking is a worry but inside work is something to get excited about
Redden A+ - Jack looked extremely good tonight, reminded me of his form from a few years back. Strong with good clearance work
Rockliff D- - Tagged out of it by Curren, going to get hard for rocky with opposition teams seeing how weak he handled it tonight
Raines B+ - Could be said rainesy set us up in the first half. dropped a bit later on but actually used the ball well and linked up alot of runs
Robertson A - Unit, i'm sure his old man would be proud, showed he can take a mark and can run his guts out
Aish A+ - James Aish, welcome to the big time. announced himself tonight with an absoulte monster of a game. Could be said he won us the match with his quick handballing and awareness
Taylor B+ - Good game from little lewy. Loves a goal on the run
Zorko A- - 2nd qtr, wow what a little jet, went quite but overall good defensive pressure and run
Browny B - Two very important goals. handballed well
Paparone D - On the chopping block fumbled a fair bit
Green B - Great game back by the little bloke. Cannot believe how good he is on ground level.
Merrett D+ - quiet game for the big sauce but up front is where he belongs with all the depth we have down back
McGuane E - Knee is not right, wont be in the team next week
West A - hulk of a performance. needed to step up and really did
Cutler C - still looks really good with ball in hand

I thought that:

- Reddo stepped up while Rocky copped some treatment.
- Pats dragged his form back and showed the defense what he is capable of, restricting Nicky No Flags to the point of no influence.
- Aish played his best game so far, particularly in the last quarter. I think that calls for a Rising Star nom may be premature though.
- Rocklobster has copped a taste of tag soup and needs to temper his gag reflex.
- Zorko needs to spend more time in the middle. The midfield is his best position.
- Lester's intent is apparent, but he seriously needs to work on his disposal. I agree with calls that we overrate him.
- West is much better than he was given credit for when we traded for him. Seriously solid acquisition.
- Despite last week's performance, Brown is still losing his mojo.
- Robbo will be a beast in the midfield before too long. For now he makes his presence known and can hold his head up high, but I agree with whoever it was that suggested that he was so buggered in the last from his previous efforts that he couldn't handle the ball. Once he learns economy of effort, he will be our unstoppable clearance monster.
- Although he has been moved back to defense, I think that Hanley has been off his game this year. We will improve when he learns his role properly. He isn't shaming himself at this stage, but he has a great deal of improvement left in him
- Mayes continues to toil in the midfield. At present his best position is still in the forward line though.
- Darcy Gardner will be on the receiving end of many reprimands and weeks off at the hands of the MRP and the tribunal in his next few years, but crivens we will love him for it. This lad is going to be a Brisbane favourite while the rest of the league hates him. I love it.
- Lewy Taylor has improved in the seniors at a pace that I would never have predicted. No wonder he was brought straight into the seniors without a preseason. I always giggle when Brownie hugs him.
- Rog was super well behaved.
- I'm still not convinced that Raines will be with us for much longer. To survive on this list it seems as though he has been told to transform himself again. I genuinely wish him the best and hope he succeeds.

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!.

Thats what I am trying to say that he does have an attacking side to his game and I reckon that + amazing tagging = a non one dimensional player who will bring a lot to the team. As my example rockliff on Mitchell, managed to provide the team with good attacking influence as well as curbing mitchell's influence.
