Autopsy Rd 8: Dogs battle bravely and come up just short against Hawks

So our defenders can’t defend nor use the ball well. What a combo. Forget about the midfield needing a reset, our backline is virtually at ground zero.

I think a big part of the problem is our forward half pressure, the amount of times we kick it straight to the opposition in our forward half and the way we defend kick ins is pathetic. We consistently race the ball forward only to then turn it straight over. That makes it near impossible for our back 6 to defend. It’s a team wide issue.

People here and Dogs fans have criticised Keath, Gardner etc over the years. Be careful what you wish for. Even in their worst games last season as a duo (and there were plenty of bad ones, their ability to do the basics of closing down space and not being outmarked was never as bad in one game as O'Donnell and Khamis today. That is the reality.

I’m with you re: Keath and Gardner.

They’re hardly May, Lever or Darcy Moore, but bring them in please.

Bailey Smith spotted towing a U-Haul down Barkley Street.

Is Leon Cameron working in another industry at the moment? His record with the Giants was pretty good. Career coaches are supposed be better second time around.

First mind-boggling part
We seemingly have a bunch of talented millionaire players, or players that will command million dollar money if they leave. These players can't beat a team that genuinely struggled to make it to the cap floor.

Second mind-boggling part
The administration that watches these talented players underperform for a solid two years now, does not make the change required for the members and the supporters to see some improvement. Why is ameet bains still here? HOW IS THE COACH STILL HERE?

Third mind-boggling part
Luke Beveridge, Rohan Smith, and the administration of this football club sat there and watched the team back off the mark, apply no ball pressure to the ball carrier, and thought this zoning system was acceptable for an AFL football team for a WHOLE YEAR. This left lasting, poisonous habits on a list of players who now think the absolute bare minimum of defensive pressure outside of our D50 is acceptable. Nothing has changed here with the new coaching appointments. Our pressure game is abysmal.

Fourth mind-boggling part
We will have one of the most expensive key forward groups in the competition. They will have genuine trouble stringing together half an AFL standard defense with this money imbalance. With this in mind, our forwards consistently crash into each other. Matt Spangher is STILL our forward line coach.

The TLDR: It is wild that Luke Beveridge still coaches this team. The past two years have been a giant waste of time.

Good call out. When you play 3 key forwards you need to balance it out with pacey smalls to apply pressure. Our list really is all over the place.

Clubs are clearly running their attack through Khamis - can we adjust? No chance.
They're doing this when he plays high. They're doing this when he plays deep.

He should've been subbed early so that we could get some extra run into defence. Something that a 3rd tall should at least offer, but he just doesn't.

The problem with subbing him out early is that we were witnessing one of the all time terrible debuts by an overawed Clark.

We are way too tall all over the ground and it's nobbling the side.

It just don't work.

And also.

That last shot on goal by Jamarra.

What the actual.

Can’t you at least kick a point, make it 5 points the difference and we’re at least a chance?

Face, meet palm.

He’s our million dollar man, we’re not allowed to question his performance.

Hopefully, today puts to rest what some people were saying about us going into Round 1 under-prepared and on the back of a soft practice match schedule. I mean come on, we played a very formidable Hawthorn line-up. Not once, but TWICE!
Correct. We learned our lesson playing North and Footscray last year and so went into this is season to with our most fit, strongest and ready team.

That’s the type of game I’d be yelling at the tv and getting more and more annoyed as the game went on.

Today I sat and watched without a care in the world. It’s not a surprise anymore and it’s just time for Beveridge to go and until then I don’t really care anymore
Welcome aboard brother, been like this since the Melbourne game after naively getting my hopes up in the preseason

We did badly because the players have no mental hardness, but to suggest it's NOT the coach... trying to work out if you're trying to be funny?
I'm not exactly sure basic skill errors moving the ball out of defence and the basics of defending defensive marking contests has anything to do with mental hardness. If anything, the extent that we gave effort in this game was acceptable. Can't say I agree.

You can probably tell me otherwise, but unless we play Naughton deep. We dont have a single genuine pressure forward on the list. We pad out the forward half with small forward/mid hybrids but no genuine pressure forwards.

This has been a recipe for the unfolding disaster for a mc wedded to the idea that 3 tall forwards is the way to go.

Out on there feet?? - These guys don’t run. Lazy or unmotivated more likely.
There are those that genuinely need a rocket up their arse - perhaps the greatest football mind of our generation would disagree though. He knows everything.

Every single week our 'style' is the same. Outside of an injury, we make zero tactical changes. Our scores are due to persistent effort, not smart or structural football. Our reward for effort must be the lowest in the AFL.

I''m just glad we're the fittest team in the AFL, or whatever that bloke said.
