Review Rd 9: Freo keep rolling against the Swans

Franklin is cooked. Had an absolute 'mare today.
Thought last year him playing on was probably be a bad idea, could potentially make himself and the club look a bit silly in an awkward situation where he shouldn't be near the best 22 but they can't drop him. In saying that out of finals contention would make it less of a problem.

Really important win and it's so good to see the ball movement and forward line functioning properly. Amiss, Tracy and Jackson for the foreseeable future is something to be excited about.

I thought the umpiring was an absolute disgrace.

My concern going forward is we need to be getting games into Erasmus and Johnson, which with Fyfe will be difficult.
It’s a fine line. The team as is, is about right. Frederick was great on the wing in the last quarter.
Fyfe to play another sub game next week?
Can’t see Johnson in with Erasmus against Geelong

All about Treacy that. He takes the same get out of jail marks up the field that Tabs does but actually has a footy brain to use it well. Also is the perfect foil to Amiss; keeps his defender accountable and doesn't lead into Amiss (or Jackson's) path. Gonna habe the odd quiet game, but that's a partnership we need to just keep pumping games into now.

Secondly, Jackson is a star. Worth what we paid. Also works amazingly with Darcy (thanks Suma for getting him angry).

Thirdly, this team just needs time. Got Johnno to come back in and Fyfe is going to build. Chemistry starting to happen. 2025 is looking good.

Omeara and Banners decent also.

I though Erasmus’ fight inside was really important, but no doubt he is out next week for the king.
Thought he was great in the third. Was standing up in the first half. He’s not shying away from the contest

Treacys best game for the club surely?
He had some swagger going in that last quarter. Loved his gee up with Amiss after Amiss kicked our second goal in the last quarter. Then Treacy launched himself with purpose at every kick that went his way. Shame that confidence was missing in round 1. Loved his game and some of his Peel swagger started to show today.

I’ve been defending JOM since the beginning. I thought he was solid enough early but a little unsure at times in the first batch of games. Given more time to adjust to new game plan and playing with young midfield he has started to really improve. I’m confident that the trade essentially a F2 will be worth the cost. Some of vitriol towards him and the trade has been well over the top. We have been game time into both Erasmus and MJ and I see no reason why we can’t continue to get them into the team.

In the wash-up the trade of Lobb = 33 (Hugh Davies) & JOM. Meek was involved but we also ended up with pick 41 (Emmett).

Nice to see that even in the first quarter where we were out scored, we never looked out played.
Good effort from start to finish.
I like that when we have some confidence and momentum, we take it thru the middle. Young an expert of driving it thru there.
So happy that Josh has taken up the challenge and is working his way up the ground....kinda how Tabs used to, Josh just much better at it :)
Jackson was fantastic. AP played his best game for the season and showed Buddy no mercy.
Thought the usual whipping boys were good too.

Why not Banfield?

Can anyone say with a straight face Erasmus wouldn't do the medium pressure forward role better than Banfield?
I love Ras' desperation and his hunt ball mentality. Really helps I think, but you can't say Banners didn't play his position really well today, and probably better than a youngster who doesn't usually play that role. Got front and centre, crumbed well, got a goal and was involved in plenty. He's a great role player, and would be really stiff to be dropped.

I’ve regularly called for Banfield to be out of the side - but he was outstanding today - probably close to his best game in purple. Schultz’s third goal was because Banners crashed a pack with three Swans - he had no right to halve that contest.

All the lines worked well today - forwards were immense, and Fyfe only came on late because nobody deserved to come off sooner.

So stoked for Tracey - that was a bloody solid game from him, his hanger was a thing of beauty. That should give him a lot of confidence.

Jager is gelling with the midfield group nicely now. Lot more synergy between them.

Darce and Jackson in the midfield - Jesus! It's bloody scary how well that could work.

Darce was a monster in the ruck - lots of his little taps to advantage in the second quarter handed us midfield dominance and goal opportunities. That one-armed mid-ruck catch, spin, F50 entry kick off a step, and then Shoota's resulting mark and goal had me laughing my f***ing head off - what a classic!! 🤣🤣

Jackson is the big-bodied goal kicking mid we needed and bloody dangerous all over the ground. The fact he's also a 200cm ruckman and contested marking key forward is just crazy stuff. If he keeps his current trajectory going, he'll be the next Polly Farmer.

Clark was solid - matter of fact the whole back six were great today. Ditto the midfield followers - Loved the pressure and chase down tackles in the second quarter... I think it really got under Sydney's skin.

Only guy who was a bit quiet was Sonny, but I also think Sydney's defenders were shadowing him close all day, which helped let Lachie get off the hook and kick a bag. Keep Sonny in the team next week simply because he always demands close attention from defenders, even when he's off form.

There's still room for improvement, but there were also no weak links today, the system stood up well. Most importantly the team were able to implement the necessary changes going forward at quarter time, and we're also able to respond in the final quarter when challenged.

Very promising signs. Bravo lads - great stuff to see.

Yep it's true, Banfield has been ok.

You can do everything right and still be the one who should go.

He is a very good team mate. When he isn't on the field, subbed out, he will be high fiving everyone coming off the field.

IIRC, Banners is also much taller than Ras. Banners is 190cm on the button, but from memory I think Ras is only 184cm.

Banners had 15 disposals at 86% DE, 8 score involvements, 2 Goal assists and kicked a goal.

Honestly, that should be his baseline. If you are the 20th-23rd player in the team, you need to be putting in these numbers regularly to maintain your spot and not once every 6-8 games. If you don't, there needs to be something else you add to the team which he doesn't.
