Round 11

This week marks the end of every side playing each other at least once, some interesting results last week!! Big games to be played this week...

Rockbank (8th, 4-6) Vs Romsey (1st, 10-0)
Prediction:
Romsey

Melton Centrals (9th, 3-7) Vs Lancefield (12th, 0-10)
Last week Centrals put all the rubbish rumors behind them and picked up a superb win over one of their rivals for 6th spot in Wallan. While the season has so far been a little inconsistent, Centrals have shown what they are capable of if they compete as a unit, they pushed Sunbury to the limit a few weeks ago and the win at Wallan would be up there with the big win over Woodend/Hesket earlier in the year. Midfielder Justin Watkins continued his strong form over recent weeks with a best on ground and 2 goals. Centrals were down to no interchange at 3 quarter time last week and the spirit shown has to send a stream of confidence throughout the list.
The Tigers rough year continued, while they were competitive in the first half, the weight of numbers eventually caught up, a 12 goal to 1 second half seeing the Tigers run of losses continue. While they are trying hard, the Tigers youngsters face an uphill battle on a weekly basis. The important thing for these young guys is to follow the track set by Broadford last year, get game time into the kids and watch them improve, as long as they don't lose complete interest, they will improve and their efforts will eventually be rewarded.
This is another tough trip for the Tigers though and traveling to Melton with Centrals full of confidence, can't see them being rewarded this week.
Prediction: Centrals by 50 points.

Kangaroos (2nd, 8-2) Vs Wallan (6th, 4-6)
The Kangaroos are coming off what was a superb contest last week against the Redbacks. This weeks game at home will allow the Kangas to nail down a top 3 spot with a win. With the possibility of a couple of players returning to the lineup the Kangas are sure to go into the game stronger, Matt Welsh will add skill and class on a wing while the Kangaroos continue to bring in youngsters from the Under 18 for opportunities. The form of Dylan Wright and Jamie Cuffe has to be a boost to the line up while the dual full forward combo of Meacham and Baker will need to be stopped for the Magpies to be a chance. The Kangas have a real strength with the ability of the half back line to rebound. Jake Powell and Simon Clark read the ball well and provide plenty of drive.
The Magpies must rebound from last weeks horrible loss to Centrals, they are fighting for a position in the top 6 yet to drop a game last week puts them in the danger zone. While they have plenty of talent, these players have the tendency to go missing at important stages of the game, and playing against a side the calibre of the Kangaroos, any lapses will see them quickly blown away. Matt Robertson, Justin Collis, and Dave Cornish must have big games, if it is left to the youngsters up from the 18's they will have a very difficult game.
The Kangaroos should bounce back after the narrow loss last week, but surely the Magpies have to give a better account of themselves, a big loss here and their season could be slipping away.
Prediction: Sunbury Kangaroos by 40 points.

Broadford (11th, 2-8) Vs Diggers Rest (3rd, 8-2)
The Roos were a much improved outfit last week after the debacle against Woodend, they pushed Macedon right to 3 quarter time and looked as though they would push them all the way before being outgunned in the last term. They certainly weren't disgraced and it was good to see some new names in the best players.
What can you say about the Burra that hasn't been said a million times, fantastic team that is willing to work for one another, they have positioned themselves beautifully for another tilt at finals action. Any trip to Broadford is tough, but the Burra have enough class to get over the line here in what will be a really competitive game.
Prediction: Diggers Rest by 30 points.

Riddell (4th, 7-3) Vs Woodend/Hesket (7th, 4-6)
The Bombers added two new players to the line up last week and looked the goods against the Tigers, but this could be a danger game as these two have a long standing rivalry. The Hawks have been pretty good in recent weeks and will be desperate to pinch a win against a more fancied opponent to give them an advantage in the race for 6th spot. The young players in the Hawks line up have given them a real boost in youthful enthusiasm and has rejuvenated the line up. Ross Waters is in excellent form up forward, while Salpietro has been good in recent weeks. The loss to the Burra last week would have been disappointing, but it isn't the end of the world, the Hawks are capable, they just need to show up in the right frame of mind.
For the Bombers, Mick Allen continues to show why he is one of the most dangerous forwards this competition has seen. Needing to slow Allen down isn't made any easier with Ruffell, Baird, Elliott and now McMahon up forward. The Bombers midfield and forward line is up there with the best going around and will be looking to propel them into finals football.
Tough game for the Hawks on the road, would have given them more chance at home, but they can sneak a surprise, so who knows.
Prediction: Riddell by 30 points

Match of the Round
Kilmore (10th, 3-7) Vs Macedon (5th, 7-3)
Most will see this as a strange match of the round, but I think this could be a cracking contest.
The Blues are a tough side to beat at home and with Goudge up and running again as well as Hede in great form, they are a huge chance this week. Don't get me wrong, they have to be. A chance at a finals spot is up for grabs. A loss here and it is almost bye bye to any finals hopes that they might have. In recent weeks the Blues have been aided by Assumption midfielder Alex Desmond who has been in sparkling form, his biggest advantage is the ability to kick goals from the midfield. Plenty has been said about the joining of the Gordon Brothers, but lets be honest, their impact has been serviceable at best to this point, the Blues need a lift from them if they are to be a finals hope. Shane Jacobs is performing as we all know he can and his output would be much improved if some of the names above can lift too.
The Cats are having a rough trot with injuries. Losing playing coach Al Meldrum certainly hurts, but James Wright has missed the last couple of games through injury too. Last week it was good to see Ash Fleming back to his best with 5 goals, while Jason Davies and Jae Wilton were named as the Cats best. This is a big test for the Cats who in the past have been asked the question away from home. They also come up against a side that has a very good midfield capable of winning contested ball, will that play a role in this game?
Things are getting tight for Kilmore in the race for 6th, while the Cats will want to keep their top 3 hopes alive with a solid win away from home.
Prediction: Macedon by 10 points.

Good luck to all this week and enjoy the footy!!! :thumbsu:

G'day lads, just wondering where the grand final is held and also peoples opinion on what's the best ground in the comp?

Reason I ask is because I had a day off work today and thought what better way to spend it then by leaving the warm tropical climate of Geelong and taking a drive to visit some of the towns and footy grounds around the riddel district!!

Geez you blokes are spoilt with some of the terrific surrounds and grounds yous get to play on. In Geelong most of the grounds have Santa Anna couch grass which makes for really nice conditions, but most grounds are pretty drab, basically suburban grounds nesttled in between houses and schools etc. It was great to check out ovals surrounded by trees and creeks and a bit of mud on the ground! Reminded me of the good old days!!

I didn't get to see every ground but ill rate them in the order I thought was best to worst..
1- Macedon- quite simply that is the most picturesque football ground ive ever seen..

2- Lancefield- another beautiful ground and surroundings. Was a bit strange that there seemed to be 2 different club rooms tho.

3- Romsey- id been to romsey years ago when I was a kid and it was a dump. Obviously had new rooms built sometime in the last 10 years and I loved the undercover BBQ area in front of the rooms.

4- Woodend- another really picturesque oval. Tried to walk out to the middle but only got 2 meters onto the ground before I realized id lose my shoes if I walked any further. Strange that there seemed to be 2 sets of clubrooms aswell.

5- Riddell- wasnt to bad but nothin' special compared to some of the other grounds I visited.

I've also seen Melton centrals ground but that's a dive. Haven't seen any of the other grounds in the comp so can't comment.

All in all there's some very nice grounds in some beautiful little towns and I reckn itd be a great comp to play in/follow.. Cheers fellas.

One building is the changerooms, the other is the 'clubrooms', sounds like u had a good day!

Word on the street is Romsey is set for a major upgrade to facilities, If this true which Im certain it is Romsey will be the premier ground in the comp if not the district. Exiting times ahead at Redback stadium (formally known as The House Of Pain when I last donned the Red & Black haha):thumbsu::thumbsu:

My informant had the other scores as. . .
Sunbury def Wallan by about 50
Diggers def Bford by 5pts
Centrals def L'field by 5pts

Just wondering if anyone can inform me on how the finals work. In terms of who plays who and when the finals venues are decided?

Pretty sure week one goes 1v2, 3v6 and 4v5. To make it easy, say if the higher ranked sides win on week one then it would go 1v3 in a 2nd semi and 3v4 in a 1st semi.

As for venues, clubs have to tender if they're interested in staging a final at their ground, with the fee paid to the RDFL to do so increasing each week thru the finals series.

Geez if Sunbury beat Woodend this week and both Broadford (v Rockbank) and Kilmore (v Wallan) cause upsets then this battle for 6th is still a long way from being clear

How did the Rams perform mate?

They were very good, the best thing for the Rams is the young guys, Sobotnicki and Armistead were fantastic. Jackal is an impressive footballer and Matty Krul gives them great drive.

They have a bright future at Rockbank and hope they can continue to build in the future...

Thanks, yeah I like what I have seen too. I still got them to make finals. Will be great for them and the leauge as a whole if this happens. If they do make it can they upset anyone remembering they have now performed very well against our top 2 sides?

Yeah, I still have them finishing at 7-11 and equal with the Hawks, the key for the Rams is they haven't been smashed, the Hawks got smashed by the Bombers on the weekend and it will have a big effect on final percentage..

I think they could sneak into 6th, will probably mean they face Riddell, Diggers or Sunbury in the first week, I know a couple of clubs have talked about finishing 3rd so they can get a "cushy" game the first week then play off for a spot in the GF... I would think that nearly every side that has played them have Rockbank as far from a "cushy" first week of finals, they are as physical as any other side (probably the most physical) and will give huge account for themselves if they make finals, beware a physical side come finals side, my advice, avoid 3rd at all costs!!!

Current Percentage

Wallan - 91.29
Rockbank - 89.91
Woodend/Hesket - 84.34

Nothing in it, all three sides on 4 wins 7 losses along with Centrals.. Some massive games this week in the context of the rest of the year..

Diggers Vs Riddell - Battle for 3rd almost
Kilmore Vs Wallan - Kilmore can put a massive dent in Wallan's finals hopes.
Woodend Vs Kangaroos - Early in the year was a smashing, if Hawks get hammered again it could be curtains.
Broadford Vs Rockbank - A tricky away game for the Rams.

Performance Ladder - Round 11

Riddell
Macedon
Kangaroos
Romsey
Diggers Rest
Broadford

Rockbank
Melton Centrals
Lancefield
Wallan
Kilmore
Woodend/Hesket

As much as you hate to see it happen, it's probably a smart move, something needs to be done to help the Hawks out with that ground, although the local council is probably waiting to see if they can stop the Hawks charging a gate first...

I assume that the switch will mean the Hawks still host the game?

Hope to see everyone down at Dempster Park, Sunshine tomorrow night at 7PM to support the Under 18 interleague side as they take on the WRFL... We have had a tough program and faced many challenges, so it would be fantastic to see strong support for the boys at the game... :thumbsu:

Heard there may have been an incident on the weekend involving the coach of Kilmore and the owner of the business that is major sponsor?? This would leave Kilmore in a very vulnerable position.. Can anyone confirm or deny??

Not much in it apparently, you know what the bush telegraph is like, cut it in half then divide by 4 and that's more accurate - all focus out of the Blues camp will surely be on the big local derby this week against Wallan and keeping the battle for 6th spot interesting.

As much as you hate to see it happen, it's probably a smart move, something needs to be done to help the Hawks out with that ground, although the local council is probably waiting to see if they can stop the Hawks charging a gate first...

I assume that the switch will mean the Hawks still host the game?
Would Woodend receive any compensation or the like for having to play on a sunday vs Cousins?
