Obvious solution: the Flintstone's car. Still uses a lot of rock but it's 1:1 in what you dig up to what goes in the car. Plus no emissions!

Struggles to hold a serving of ribs though.

EVs seem like such a cool ride. I look forward to having a drive of one. I just don't get the ideological opposition to them. Sure, there are hurdles to overcome before critical mass is reached, but why sneer at them? They won't save the planet but it doesn't mean we shouldn't have them.

To be honest the idea of "the average driver" typically getting around in vehicles that can 0-100 in 5 seconds or less is horrifying.

I'm imagining the weekly Dash Cams Australia videos but all plus 30kph. Faaark.

Just because you can go 0-100 in 5 seconds doesn't mean you have to. The instant torque of EVs is where this comes from, versus a combustion engine needing to hit it's efficiency and rpm to produce torque to move a car.

But much like a petrol, diesel or gas powered car, there's plenty of play room between 0% throttle and 100% wide open throttle. I wouldn't expect Joe Blow EV driver to mash the throttle on his car just as he didn't with his petrol car. And I'd expect those used to a performance petrol car who did drive in this manner to continue that trend if they ever switched to an EV.

You have entirely too high an opinion of road users. Possibly not much appreciation of how much faster a 5 second car is than a 7 second car (that many folks would consider brisk and seems to be the base-line of EV performance)? Admittedly the speed of these cars is currently being used as a marketing point and something to try and sway people to trying these types of vehicles out, perhaps mass adoption will see the typical EV with more sensible performance.

It's like going from shooting a .22 to a .308. In principle it's the same thing but the experience of doing it is very different.

There are stacks of accidents where folks race the lights. They will keep racing the lights in their EV's but they will be going significantly faster. I'd much rather get t-boned at 70kph than 100kph...k.e= 1/2m*v2 and all that. People will continue to make miscalculations or flat out poor decisions on the road.

I'm not saying the cars are inherently dangerous. I'm saying many drivers don't possess the skill set to safely operate something with that much mumbo and the inclination to work at acquiring the skills to do so - like an enthusiast would - will vary greatly in the broader population.

I think EV's are cool as shit but the attitude and skill level of drivers lags far behind the typical performance of these vehicles. As a road user, it is a concern.
