Daayyymn! Was there any noticeable sag before this happened?

There was some hairline cracks but no sagging as such until the last couple of hot days and a couple started widening

Fair bit of creaking last night so we moved most of the loose stuff out just in case. Then about 5.00 the creaking got worse and the crack in one corner opened up to a few mm

Was looking at it with my phone torch and then it started sounding like a falling tree. Jumped into the entry out of the way and the whole thing came down

It’s an old house so plaster ceiling not gyprock and no screws holding it up, just glue which has failed obviously

No real damage done to anything else and dust everywhere because it had that old loose fibre insulation

Just one of those things

Have my sister in laws funeral today so it’s going to get pretty ragged later on. My brother is a mess

Ah geez, that's a rough trot you're having. Take care.

All the best for today mate.

Those old plaster ceilings have strapping over the joists to hold it in place. The blow-in insulation is heavy stuff and pretty much useless after a little while.

You'll be able to get a replica of that cornice if you want to replace it with something that looks the same - pretty sure it's called stegbar. Cove cornice will be way cheaper to replace it with though, and I'd treat yourself to some new R4 batts while you're at it.

Drop me a line if you aren't going the insurance route mate, I'll put the feelers out to a couple of subbies and see if anyone has a day spare to do a private job. Be way cheaper than going through my work.
