Revising the 2006 draft, where do people place Gibbs in terms of potential?

Pretty much every single post from the Carlton crew here contains some form of excuse for Gibbs - I don't follow how he goes much but I can tell you the following things:

He was only 17
It's only his second season
Pagan used him in defence which has held him back
He doesn't have a lot of quality around him
He will be better than player X
He will be a champion

Defensive much?

Then the Selwood thing starts, they both debuted last year, Gibbs was nothing special playing in a pocket, Selwood ripped it up in the Premiership team and won the Rising Star.
This year Gibbs has started to come good and done some good things. Selwood has continued to play as a midfielder in the reigning premiers and has been good, our best player in a game or two (with a fair bit of competition). Why do people feel the need to post that Gibbs will be a better player? It is just hope.
You haven't read throuhg the thread i take it ?? Geelong posters have been stating catergorically that selwood will be a better player than Gibbs ..they must have crystal balls .

Just a feeling they have ..it's the vibe of the thing . ;)

Ahem Selwood is a better player than Gibbs. That may change in the future, who knows? Gibbs might get injured and never play again, so might Selwood....

Dude - you are being way too defensive here. The whole point of this thread is for posters to debate who they think will be the best player of the 2006 draft. Thus when people say that Sellwood will be a better player than Gibbs, all they are doing is stating their opinion (which is the whole point of the the thread....)

I guess I can understand why Carlton fans are being defensive. All that Carlton have to get them excited these days is to follow the progress of their bevy of precious high draft picks, and if anyone dares question the ability of any of these high draft picks, then it is essentially an attack on the one thing that you have to hold onto. So I will cut you all a little slack (although it doesn't stop you all from looking like whiny children....)

1995 still cutting deep i see ...move on ..your team has finally managed to win a premiership in your lifetime and are doing quite well at the moment ..so just be happy with that . Just as i am happy with our 16 premierships and developing list .

Exactly !! One has a congenital knee condition ...the other is fine . Lets wait until the end of their careers until we proclaim who has been the better player .
Even then we may agree to disagree..I believe Leigh Mathews was the best player i have seen play the game ..where i would imagine a Cats supporter would say Ablett snr...it's all speculative.

The fact that you feel the need to reference something that happened 13 years ago is an absolutely prime example of being ultra defensive. Move on? People in glass houses.....

hahahahahahhahaha

It is funny to read Carlton supporters talking about how good Gibbs is because he held Cornes to 8 possessions and had 13 himself.

the following week Cornes played Geelong, he had 1 possession to half time and his best oponent, Joel Corey, was one of the best on ground.

Shows how good Cornes' health and form was at that stage.

It it wasn't for that "congenital knee condition" (which as far as I am aware is not exactly accurate - if it were truely congenital all 4 Selwood brothers would have knee problems, which they don't. In any case, Joel doesn't exactly seem troubled by a knee problem these days), Joel would never have ended up at Geelong, and in all likelihood he would have been drafted by Carlton and you would right now be proclaiming him to be the greatest player ever drafted. Bryce who?

Thank the lord for "congenital knee conditions".

Don't speak sense to a Carlton fan!

Calf, Knee and Finger aren't good enough reasons....

Gibbs will be a better player long term then Joel Selwood ... Make no mistake ...

You have to remember it's a lot easier to come in and play for a team that's dominant like Geelong, then a team that's been on the bottom the past 6 years in Carlton ...

And I'd back his stats to prove he's not a 'soft' reciever, he has a great work rate, and this year laid ten tackles in a game ..

And it's delicously ironic how Bomber fans can sledge Gibbs and Carlton, when it appears that their no 2 draft pick Gumbleton can't seem to stay healthy ...

FWIW The only player from that draft I would have taken ahead of Gibbs is Leurnberger, just looks like a future star ruckman, which is very hard to find ..

Selwood is courageous, talented, fit, skilled by hand and foot, has great awareness and peripheral vision, and almost always chooses the right option. Who's to say that he hasn't made Geelong better, not visa versa?

He would be a gun in any side.

Gibbs still looks like a kid, because he is. Selwood is more physically developed. Wasn't there some knock on Selwood at the time of the draft that said medical tests showed he may have knee problems down the track due to leg makeup/structure??

To judge Gibbs now is just plain ridiculous and unfair.

so a guy who can't get on the park at all, promises more? is that cause he has delivered sweet FA so far?

No one can say Gumbleton or any of those other high KPP are as good as Selwood, Boak and Gibbs atm. Just cause they went high in the draft it doesn't mean shit, they haven't delievered yet to the same degree.

So potential is a bullshit word. They could all never play another game.

"Spot the difference between POTENTIAL and PREFORMANCE. Note they are two different words, with different meanings."

Yeah it might be a bullshit word, but we are still rating on POTENTIAL. If Boak somehow loses a leg, does that mean some w***ers who got picked in the rookie list has/Had more "Potential" then Boak?

I'd argue that Selwood always had more potential. It's just that at the time of the draft he had more risk.

You have to remember that you have to way up the potential of the player with any injury risks. At the time of the draft most recruiters had Gibbs ahead.

I think a lot of the fears about Selwood knee have been put to rest since then and it is my opinion that every team would pick Selwood before Gibbs now.

We lost both the games against Collingwood when he held two of your young guns, so clearly he's a dud.

Is this thread about Gibbs?

Or Collingwood, Brown, Thomas and Pendlebury?

You clowns obviously didn't see the game on the weekend.

Just like Buckley and Hird, Gibbs just puts himself in the right position to win the ball on Sunday and cleared it to advantage. Gibbs' effort to strip the slippery Leroy Jetta of the ball with a clean tackle was the most exciting thing he did in the game.

He works hard both ways and is a complete player.
Clearly its a thread about Gibbs i would not have said it other wise.:)

carlton got sucked in by all the crows hype about father /son drafting and took him #1 when he should be somewhat lower. remembering the father son selction would have been a 3rd round selection. Did carlton spend a 1st pick on a 3rd round selection?

The Gibbsmeister will prevail - all class and poise; wasn't first out of the blocks, but just you watch this boy (drafted at bottom age, unlike Selwood) continue to blossom and fully justify Carlton's faith - enjoying a very good 2008!
