What can you say.
The rules of this game are an absolute farce.
Surely the spirit of this rule goes back to the shenanigans of the hawk GF rushed behind effort. Like every knee jerk recative rule that the AFL brings in this one is being gamed by the players and creates confusion amongst fans and players as it's adjudicated differently each bloody time you watch.
It's funny I'm now seeing stories from the AFL that it wasn't because of the Hawthorne grand final that the rule was charged but a game Richmond won that year

I'm quoting what the umpires thought process would have been in order to pay that a free kick. The rules state the player must not be under any pressure. Short was clearly under pressure, as Green was 2 steps behind him. More to the point, how the **** does Short know where Green is?
He is clearly meant to pick up the ball and try and take Green on to be only tackled and done for holding the ball.

He looked around.
Did he though? I didn't notice.

Look, if he did take note on where Green was, then that isn't an issue from the umpire because Green was technically far enough for him to pick the ball up. The rule is the rule no matter how unfair some think the rule is. If he didn't notice Green, then if I was the umpire I wouldn't have paid it.

Regardless, if this call gets blamed for us losing this game if it ends up close, I may laugh out loud, because that means that yet again our close loss is externalised to the umpires and not to the Richmond players who didn't kick a goal from a gettable place. The scoring shots is 15-9 our way, and we are losing.

Most other umps call it right, but this campaigner is like a parking inspector straight out of parking school. Every technical fine gets handed out until the old timers pull the campaigner in line.
He also called a fre against us from Collins street when the umpire five yards away said play on
