yep, small defensive defenders has been our nemesis for a while...Farmer was recruited specifically to fill that hole but looks better in a more attacking mode...I reckon o'Rielly could be the man...moves really well, handles the pill cleanly and his use at this early stage is impressive...that's who I'd be perservering with in this role...shame we haven't seen him play for a month

Yes...where is o'reilly..?!?!...

I like the irishman...but would he have the pace to keep up with betts though...?!?

I do think the answer to containing betts is mid field pressure...

Only player from either side that has done better is Jack in terms of goals scored.

As for tearing us apart, last year round 1 Betts had 19 disposals 6 marks 6 tackles and kicked 3.3. In round 1 2009 15 disposals 4 marks 4 tackles 5 goals.

i could argue the last 2 times we have played them they have destroyed us.
his returns in that context with so much opportunity are quite average.
what about the game before, rnd 15 2009 a close game where he has to work a bit for his possesions how did he go then.

if they blow us off the park again he will likely have a picnic. if we can close it down be competetive and importantly put an accountable player on him with the attributes to go with him he will have to work and his input will be more normal.

true to a fair extent, in the past couple of games the supply into their forward 50 has been so overwhelming, Mickey mouse would have had a field day...Would like to think that our midfield pack entering r1 is more advanced than same time last year. Cotch-Foley-Martin-Grigg-Morton-Edwards-Jacko so we have a good case to suggest we will win our share of ball

You would hope so...:thumbsu:...

Question over edwards contribution though as a mid...i think he is far more dangerous near goals...

He has a touch of the stephen milne about his play...

Another positive for us is that jamieson is out and kreuzer is a fair bet not be as influential...

Kreuzer out with injury I thought?

Sorry if he has been mentioned earlier in this thread somewhere, but how is Bachar Houli progressing ? and what are his chances of playing in round 1 ?

Thanks :D

He played well against Port 3 weeks ago, really stood out with his good foot skills, quiet in the last 2 matches, expect him to play rd 1 on the wing/HFF

Re: Richmond v Carltank round 1 2011

What his inspiring environmental work with Visy?

You surely don't mean his captaincy.
Yes, I do mean his captaincy along with the fact that Chris Judd has been fantastic for marketing and his signing (under whatever circumstances) did wonders for club/supporter morale and gave the young players on our list someone to look up to and idolise on the training track/ground.

yeah I agree Edwards will more than likely start in the front half, has the ability to make something of nothing...will get a run in mid at times but start deep or HF

Hope he doesn't get any run in the midfield watched all the NAB matches a turnover king. I went and saw the last game against Adelaide he was the direct cause in the first quarter for 2 goals scored against us due to wayward kicking. I wouldn't have him anywhere beyond CHF if he must be in the side.

what i would give to see cotchin at the opening bounce read the ball from the tap from the ruckman, shrug off a tackle from judd, then burn off murphy, shimmy past an oncoming defender and bang it home from 50. but like my old coach whos english wasn't the best said, dreams is nice. i guess i could hope for if we get the clearence we kick it the right way. only 10 more sleeps till round 1 almost there.

More like Nahas gets the ball trying to shrug a tackle and holds the ball gives judd the free and because judd is the AFLs pet he will figure out a way to to a 50 and kick a goal :D

why does it have to be a small. small defenders are limited.
do we learn from successful sides? well look at collingwood the smallest defender they had in both finals was shaw at 184cm.
or how about geelong hunt mackie harley scarlett taylor milburn kelly enright corey all regular defenders all solid mediums at least.

i may be wrong but hawthorn in 08 i think guerra was the smallest defender they had at 182 but built like a sherman tank at 90kg.
why does it have to be a small theres an old saying the bigger bloke will beat the smaller bloke most times.as long as the bigger bloke has similar attributes ie pace agility etc.

we dont need a small defender we just need a player capable of doing a job on small players. if hes bigger than his opponent even better.

i think jarrad waite has averaged 3 goals a game against us in his last 3.

Good points santa, which I think just confirms that it's as much to do with the work done up the ground. How often would a Betts or Garlett get to be in a one on one contest on the ground against their slower defender against the top sides. The games they won recently against the Cats/Saints, maybe they found a way to get this to happen - more so due to the opposition's mindset on those days IMO.

I think Matt Dea could be the answer to a lock down small defender. He is quick strong and alot bigger than Betts or Garlett. Would love to see him get some game time this year.

Wow a Carlton supporter who isn't a dick.

The others of us are another part of an anatomy.

We can all swap bravado across our boards, but until this game gets underway I'm nervous.
Win, lose or draw I'm just glad we have this game of ours back for the year.
Plenty for us all to look forward to.
