Rioli - The next big thing?

average more kicks, tackles, goals etc... than The Son of God (GAJ).

Now he may not have had a better first year than J Selwood, but he certainly had a better first year than the new Messiah.

Why then would anyone think he cannot improve if he has shown in the infancy of his career the capacity to be as good as the very best in the infancy of their careers?

About 300 players had better stats than Ablett Jr in their first year, yet Ablett is the best player in the comp. I look forward to the other 300 taking his crown at some stage.

in 5 years time rioli will just be another forgotten player.the odd flash than go missing, seen it all b4

Yes down Geelong way you have seen alot of "flash in the pans" haven't you!

You hope this is true of Rioli because if it is not you know how good he will be and how many more times your players will be standing waving their hands so someone else will come and help them man up Rioli, just like Enright last year.
Was funny wasn't it, not to worry, you know he will embarrass your mob many more times as he goes along.

I think it's a shame this thread has degenerated a bit into a war on stats and 'my midfielder's better than yours'...

For what it's worth I think Rioli is great. For mine he was BOG in the GF. He's strong and fast and very bloody skilfull. He's not Ablett, but who is (apart from Ablett of course)? The comparison game is a bit boring...

Playing an excellent game. Find out a bit about the game before posting.

This is just a development year for Cyril, it's great that he is getting a bit of midfield time now, it will improve his fitness and next year he will be an absolute demon.

So you're just pretty much hoping Rioli will be a gun?
In that case I reckon Ryan Gamble and Tom Hawkins will share the Coleman in 2011 as long as we're just guessing on future aspirations for pet players.

But HP's comments are based on what Cyril has already bought to the table - you would be mistaken in thinking that Gamble and Hawkins have already bought the same to the said table.

Agree that Rioli is way more advanced than Gamble and Hawkins...just trying to put a scratch in the Kevlar force field surrounding HP and his unadulterated, love fest for young Cyril. He is exciting and talented yes...time will tell if he's all that.

I have been watching Hawthorn for many years, seen many great players come and go, but Rioli is something special for his age. I don't know what he'll be in the years to come, but right now, after seeing what he has done last year and what he's done this year, he is by far the best player I've seen for that particlar age.
I assume you are only including Hawthorn players in that, because there are plenty of players who have shown more than Rioli has so far.

He's amazing to watch he puts so much pressure on the opposition when they get posession in the fwd line and his 1 on 1 ability is amazing.
So much so that a few people are starting to notice that our senior players will still kick the ball in his vicinity even if he is manned up for the simple reason that he beats his man more often than not.

He is something special alright.

I have said from the start Rioli = Ablett ...

They are almost identical players, except Rioli is quicker and stronger.

Lets hope Junior realises his full potential because if he does he will actually be superior to Ablett IMO.

Rioli is the next Ablett, Roughead is the new Lockett and Buddy's the greatest player the game has ever seen.

I don't know why the other 15 clubs bother turning up each week.

I thought that Hawkins was the new Lockett and N Ablett the next God.

And if you had comprehended my post properly I never mentioned anything about Rioli and statistics I just said that I like to look at things other than statistics.
Again I never said Rioli would have a short career, just not an overly long one.

Besides stats then, Selwood has a bung knee which will be bone-on-bone sooner rather than later so we'll see if he has an "overly long career"

Current big thing?

Still needs to develop a bit more of a tank, looked a little tired towards the end of last night's game, but his skills, particularly his kicking and evasion . . . just impeccable.
