If JSOS, TDK, Pitto and Cas all play 75% game time there will only ever need to be 3 on the ground at once, 2 forward and one ruck. Cas atleast can go back if needed too

One thing that hasn’t been mentioned yet in here is that we are playing on the SCG. A small ground that suits our gamestyle of bombing it long inside 50. I assume that’s the logic behind the Levi inclusion along with TDK and Pitto because nothing else makes sense to me.

It’s in the thread title :p

Teague will either look like a genius or a damn fool with these selections.

Rainy weather predicted so you'd think going in with Levi, TDK and Pitto would be detrimental to our chances of winning. They're going to have to play some game...

Good to see he's not afraid to drop Murph, although not sure if was the right time to do it given he's had many worse games than last week.

Anyway, at least it puts them all on notice. Bold move, I like it.

I'm definitely not a huge fan of Murph, but I can't knock his game last week. He turned it on in the 3rd.

There's been ample opportunities to drop him and send a message to the playing group throughout the season. Yet, he's dropped after his best game this year? Very strange.

As for Levi in... big yikes. I love what he's done for the club but he is so far past it, I'd rather Shaun McKernan at this point.
And maybe that's the issue?
Where was he the other 3 qts?

In the match centre details on our website it has honey as the med sub? Aren't med subs announced an hour before the game or did that change as of last week with teams being announced on Thusdays nights?

I think that's just the 'reason' for his omission. Looks like an AFL-wide thing this week.

SCG is a corridor football ground - the edge of the square is almost touching the arcs. Sydney have dined out for years on the 'kick it to Buddy' strategy- I was there when Byrne went down and Buddy kicked 12 (or more ) goals on us. Loading the forward line with 3 tall genuine marking targets and some willing smalls is pretty much what the list has been designed for - Sydney dont have tall defenders. This is where the inclusion of Levi makes sense - if that is how things play out.

In order to play that game - you also have to be able to win the contested ball game. So the game will be won or lost according to contested ball outcomes between the arcs and the pressure games from either team in their forward 50's.

I dont think kicking skill into forward lines will be as important as getting it in fast and deep at the SCG.

One thing is for sure though - the winning team has to put together 4 decent quarters of effort - Sydney will not give it up and that is Carlton's biggest challenge - too often build a lead and then think the opposiiton is going to lie down and ask for a belly rub.

The forecast will be top of 16C and 60% chance of raining/ showers there is a strong Southerly coming in , SE swell from a massive low pressure system on the west coast of NZ atm will see surf up big time, currently some nice friendly 6-8 footers to muck around with but by Sunday beaches will be closed and the 10-15 footers will be smashing in with -6-8' white water muck to bash through before the actual waves. My boards are parked with their coats on.
Harden up dude

Doing what he usually does, using it well on the outside with little pressure but going to water when opponents are anywhere near him.

As I said, I don't rate Murph as a player. Haven't for about 5 years. But if this was the game to drop him, I'm confused how he kept his place the other games he's played this year.

Think JSOS is one of our better wet weather footballers

I think Gibbons, Cottrell, Curnow and Fogarty are good wet weather types as well. If it's wet, their speed will be negated (as will our quick players), and our one paced smart footballers will come to the fore.

all this talk about periphery players being the reason we win or lose is a little overblown.. Cripps, Walsh, Weiters and Harry need to have a day out and the lead from the front! We’ve got everyone in to support them and I do think Silvagni may actually be played down back if s**t hits the fan. I assume Martin or Fog are going to play almost full time mid minutes in this game too, which is exciting.

Structure.
Dropping Murphy after he turned the game, and was far from our worst. One of the few who could actually kick inside 50 last week, which was probably our biggest issue.

Edit: also the f’ed in the head tribunal for suspending Plowman

I wonder if the prospect of wet weather is the reason Murphy is out. He's not one for a diving, punching, grinding type game.

Murphy was poor in the 1st half and still refuses to run both ways. Martin adds so much more to that aspect

If you look at the like for like, a good user, classy finisher, midfielder/forward who isn't used defensively, then Martin for Murphy is a decent replacement. He doesn't really replace any of the others directly.

Oh, Martin should certainly be in. We need players who can use the ball, particularly going inside 50.
There are clearly other options to drop rather than Murphy, particularly in that crucial aspect.
