Anyway, it's fine to back a cause and promote community spirit but attaching oneself to anything and everything for the express purpose of putting oneself into a better 'light' is patently insincere.

Correct and we are following the worldwide trend in both sport and the business world. Its these type of things which is used to assess if organisations are engaged and actively participate in their community.

What your failing to factor is the benefit it does to that particular cause - does the organisation really care why someone is motivated to help them or promote what they are doing - no is the answer.

Fully cognisant of this, as if your pandering to ones whims/causes/biases, you'll be loved and that's often good enough.
