Game day:

I wouldn't make any changes yet.

Would love to see Motlop and Kemp play well again next week to put pressure on Owies (needs to convert his set shots) and Charlie to raise their games (Charlie may well benefit from playing a few games in the VFL to find his feet). Otherwise I think it's just a matter of waiting for Walsh to return to take O'Brien's spot.

Dow for Setterfield.

I get that Dow is not a typical winger but he ain't exactly replacing one...

Dow, who was terrific yesterday in the VFL, at least brings another midfield rotation that I think will be of benefit against one of the competition's best.
No way Setters gets dropped. Played with intensity and used the ball brilliantly by foot.

O'Brien a worry. Good in space but doesn't look like winning a 1v1. Lack of power through the legs and core puts him at a serious disadvantage.

Setterfield played well on the wing last night not only attacking the contest and using the ball well but importantly working hard to hold up Richmond’s surges, which is a role Dow simply cannot play as he doesn’t have the running capacity or defensive mindset to do it, so I really hope they do not swap Setters out for Dow.

Dow’s way back into the team is as an inside midfielder and unfortunately for him Cerra and Hewett have been recruited and have stamped their authority in those roles ahead of him, and now Kennedy has gone ahead of him with a series it really good performances.

It might seem harsh but Dow has only got himself to blame as over the last 4 years he hasn’t been able to show anything close to the consistency you need from a good AFL midfielders consistently getting 25 plus possessions and running both ways.

Hera ya go!

Bulldogs are a better side than Richmond and this will be a challenge.

- We have a strong midfield that has skills but is really physical and hard at the contest. We beat Richmond up and belted them around the ball. This is something that Melbourne have done to the Bulldogs so they will be worried here.

- Our forward line is a sleeping giant. McKay and Curnow did not fire last week and we still beat Richmond. When the time comes and they do we are going to be hard to stop. I think we will keep the pressure on their defenders and stretch them in the air with McKay, Curnow, DeKoning/Pittonet and Silvagni down there.

- Our defence could be an issue for them. Richmond kept our three talls busy with their three talls. What happens if McGovern or Weitering get a bit lose and drop off in a high pressure game? Intercepting could be crucial to the game.

- A good win but plenty of improvement. Goal kicking accuracy nearly let us down, if we were straighter we would have won by more and not had to work so hard. A bit of a clean up in skills really lifts this team a long way. There were a few spilt marks and fumbles that we can be sure will iron out with game time. Some players were quite. McKay, Curnow, Owies, DeKoning, Silvagni and O'Brien were nearly there last week. An extra hold here, a straight kick there and their game turns around.

- Who could come in. The VFL hitout was a belting and all who played were good. Walsh is looming as the big in but it's not likely to be this week. Dow was great in the middle but a spot doesn't look likely. Motlop was really good up forward and looms more likely each week and Philp and Cottrell also kicked goals. Kemp and Carrol are huge talents looming large but their time isn't now. I think Motlop is a chance but honestly think there will be no change to the side.

- The Bulldogs were good last week in center clearances and so were we. We need to be able to out run them and beat them out of the middle which we can do. They have some big ball winners and so do we so a good contest is on the cards. Their forward line could be a little weak, we might be able to beat them for height. If Norton is quiet then we are a big big chance at keeping them to a low score.

- I think our height, if it fires will worry them. I think our willingness to bash and crash and tackle could really wear them down. Dogs will be in big trouble if our talls at both end fire.
Appreciative of your thoughtful posts. Thanks Bruce

Charlie will play well against the Doggies
Charlie remains a bit of a “lad”. Some physical setbacks, but think some of his “issue” is mental. Other than getting confident in his body he is dealing with a different team dynamic. Used to being “the man” now consigned to third banana up forward. Harry the spearhead, TDK is being groomed as much, if not more so as forward over ruck with the new regime. Harry and TDK were the deep forwards, with Charlie more peripheral. Also dealing with fact that big brother has been moved past already and strongly touted as a “Teague man” and unhappy with sacking.

Success and improvement realisation will bring buy in from Charlie. Did not look up and about like his normal self. No Ed and playing against Teaguey team may have been playing on his mind in some way. Confident the team dynamic will win out and we will see peak Charlie soon. As another poster said, nothing to be gained by a stint in the twos, he will come good, in a big way.

Owies tries hard, but i think Motlop with eventually replace him in the team. Owies struggles at times to get that footy smarts thinking at times and it catches him out. Motlop next to Durdin would be electric
But for less than a metre each time, Owies would have had two goals added to his direct assist from HBG in another. Owies will do just fine if he keeps this up and the goals go through, which they will. It would take some time getting used to a 75,000 crowd maybe? He seems to be slightly pulling his right leg across vs how he kicked last year. Is it injured perhaps? Regardless, his hard ball chase, tackling, team attitude and 1-2 per game will keep him there. Voss will recognise these things.

He had, a typical, 9 kicks playing on the wing for 87% of the game...
Zero tackles.
1 Inside50
Zero pressure acts
230m gained
1 One Percenter

plus, he shirked at least two 50/50 contests last night.

The Setterfield love on here is genuinely bizarre. He hasn't impacted a game in two years...

Time to try others out for that wing position...Kemp, Dow, Carroll, Martin...

Don't think Setterfield has much love left. I'd written him off and had him as the weakest link in the 22.

Stats don't tell the full story here (he had 12 pressure acts btw). Not a fantastic game by any means but played with intent for the first time in 2 years, and used the ball very well in our attacking half. Did more than enough to keep his spot in the 22.

I thought Setters was alright yesterday. I'm a critic of his but he was clean when he had the ball. Didn't get a lot of it admittedly but when he did have it he hit targets and was clean. The hit-up kick to CHF while running at pace after a handball receive on the wing out of congestion was excellent.

Not sure he's first in line to be dropped.
