There’s a litany of negatives that’ll be discussed ad nauseum. So a few positives:
  • Stringer is back in form
  • Weid looks like he can be a 40 goal/year forward
  • Hobbs did some nice things

Plenty of turn over kicks coming out of the backline even without the former captain there to lead the way, he really stamped his mark on this team and maybe now the coaches can see the team can move sideways even without him

Lots of skills errors as you'd expect from a team in development in R7. We've come a long way from last year. Clean up the errors and there's lots to be positive about. The score threatened to blow out so many times and boys cracked in and stopped the rot time and again despite the short break and too many skills errors. 16 goals in a losing team, not too shabby at all.

And might be great alongside Wright as he’d be getting the 2nd best defender most the time.

Probably 80+ belting a couple of years back.

Good systems in place and really liked ball movement at times.

Need to iron out the fumbling and slipped tackles.

Weid may not have gelled with Goodwin.

Need a big defender who can hold their ground in one on ones.

Were hurt by the non holding the ball calls.

Want Hobbs to stay in.

Tippa didn’t get a lot of the ball, but it was great to see him back and he did a few nice things. I think we need to keep playing him and he’ll just get better as he gets more fitness and confidence.

Maybe if we started with a midfield that had a bigger body we would not have been 4 goals down early.
Parish and Shiel do not work against the bigger sides . Parish/ Setterfield/ Stringer did but we where 5 goals down before we did it.

Take always:

Not sharp enough all game.

Handballs missing targets, and turnovers in general, were the result of that lack of sharpness.

Some players struggle to get involved when our overlap is nullified (Perko, Tippa, and Langford all culpable there).

Time to give Bryan a crack.

The perfect chance to give Baldwin a chance on a behemoth was missed. Maybe the club weren’t happy he’d had enough time post-concussion.

We should be excited by the fact that with so many lacklustre, fumbly performances, a five-day break after a huge game, no big key forward or key defender, and a 6 goal head start, we still managed to hang in there and out score them in the last 3 and a bit qtrs.

100+ points suggests we have the gamestyle to kick winning scores but it relies heavily on our outnumbering the opposition at the contest (think Melbourne game). When the intensity is down and our sharpness is off we get monstered.

Our marking around the ground has been off the last 2 weeks and a lot of that comes down to poor pressure on the opposition kicks for intercepts to occur and no Laverde or Jones throwing our balance out.

Yeah I didn’t like it last week either when they moved Setters back. We’ve already seen what our midfield looks like without him the last few years. Pity him and Jakey didn’t start there together at the start to at least create an arm wrestle. Pardon the pun but Danger(field) signs early.

Longer term do you think we have the potential on the list to go with the bigger midfielders? Hobbs isn't tall but does he have the requisite strength over the ball? Does Tsatas have the potential to develop a real physical side to his game? Or is this an area we need to add more depth?

Not too bad in the end given the start. I was having flashbacks of round 1 last year. Their big bodies in Danger, Atkins, Blicavs and even Holmes stood out early.

Must’ve given away 7 or 8 goals due to direct turnovers or just plain brain fades. Once again plenty to like but plenty to work on.

Strong agree. I love what Brad has done this year with the white board, but in hindsight, we needed Setters in the middle to engage Dangerfield body to body. Also, judging by the second half, BZT on Cameron and Ridley on Hawkins was a much better match up. Have those different magnets in place at first bounce and maybe that first quarter isn't quite as gruesome.

Dangerfield's big body centre bounce pressure hurt us hard and early. We couldn't make up the score board difference after that. We did stop it blowing out. I guess that's what they call a learning?

Satterfield only had 2 tackle attempts. He was shocking. Think the short break got to him and hopefully he'll be back to his best next week. Was always going to be hard to stop Dangerfield.

I think we did well to keep the margin to what it was. Other years we'd just give up and lose by 10 goals. We were always going to struggle to compete with Geelong coming off a 5-day break.

My main issue (aside from brain fades and disposal efficiency) is the decision not to have our best defensive midfielder in Setterfield at the CBAs at the start of the game. It took Brad six goals to make the adjustment. I was Jack’s complete lack of surprise when we suddenly looked decent in there again. What’s worse is he had the last quarter of ANZAC day to learn from the same mistake.

I saw some good signs from Hobbs in the last quarter. Has that ability to wire his body and sidestep like prime Cotchin and Ablett jr. Tsatas I think is definitely good on the outside but what I heard got injured in juniors and ended up playing on the wing and Wardlaw was playing middle. He is a big kid and I haven’t heard any reason why he can’t play inside eventually. Fingers crossed he is a unicorn.

I think Scott would be embarrassed by his Phillips selection - possibly the worst 2 game stretch I’ve ever seen from an AFL footballer - 1 kick and 0 marks across two games is just unheard of.

We desperately need to move past the thinking of older = better

Was mind boggling Setters did not start on ball. Esp against a big bodied midfield.

Still the fastest learnings we’ve had in the coaches box for a long time
