Rookie Selection #12 - Josh Jenkins

I think people are getting a little carried away over that video. It is a scrub competition and he is up against run of the mill footballers. He has a long way to go to be at AFL level.

AThleticism looks good but not overly impressed with his technique.

Good luck to him tho. Hoepfully we can develop him into a good footballer. :thumbsu:

Seen a bit of this bloke play and I'll admit he was a bit of a Grade 6 in the Prep playground up there in the CMFL. But he does have a lot a raw talent, very much a project player i think.

Also interesting to note that there was no footage of him playing against Ryan O'Sullivan who has been the premier big man in that league for the last 5 or 6 years. From all accounts Sully gave him a bit of a touch up. Sully was selected in the ruck in the Country Championships All Australian team though, so its no disgrace to have your colours lowered by him.

All the best to Josh, will hopefully push for selection and give us a good back-up for Hille and Ryder.

Could possbly see him playing some games this year. Moves extremely well espeically if ryder doesn't pull his finger out

Your quite ambitious imo. I think Hille, Ryder and Bellchambers are all well ahead at this stage but thats to be expected.

Im not sure what your referring to about Ryder? He hasn't been that bad has he?

Spiro you say you seen a bit of this bloke play how much?
There is no footage of him playing against O'Sullivan who is arguably Country Victorias premier ruckman if not Australias. If the truth be known they squared off at one all during the season jenkins having the better of their battle in jenkins first game back from basketball. O'Sullivan was named best in the game in the elimination final whilst jenkins played 40-50% as a permanent forward where jenkins played 100% of game time and dominated all before him.
There is however footage of him playing against Wilkinson from Balranald who would be on more money at that club than j.j will be on his rookie wage. he was recruited to Balranald from the Goulbern Valley Football League which is also no slouch of a league.
Good luck to the kid who has certainly silenced some doubters and critics with this selection and with Essendons long history of injuries with thier ruck dept he may get an opportunity and i hope he does.

Congratulations to JJ.

I coached him way back in under 10's or 12's basketball. Was a very gifted athlete with great agility and speed. Haven't seen him for a while but looks like he got massive! Good on him for giving it a crack and all the best.

As for the rest of the black and red... no comment. *jokes*

I was at one of the games JJ vs Sully and JJ won hands down in the first match and Sully was the better of the two in the elimination final, also against Balranald against a very handy ruckman JJ kicked 5 goals in the last quarter to win the game for Lake Boga and was clearly BOG.

Years ago at a club i was at we had a guy come from this league who had being playing seniors up there since age 16. He was still eliglible for u/18's at the time but the word was he would be a definite senior player. Played one senior game for the year and barely got a kick in the u/18's.

what is the relevance of this post to this conversation. we are talking about a bloke who has been 2 years out of the game playing basketball, has come back finished 5th in a club B&F playing half the season.
he has gone to screening tested well, essendon invited him to train and he trained a lot and got selected. end of story.

The standard of football he has been playing. Would he have played at a VFL club if he didnt get a rookie spot?

Relevant?

People who make these snap judgements about "athlete v footballer" and "country league blah" and "mature age this" are struggling whether to categorise him as a basketballer, a mature age or a country footballer to make their type judgements.
He's all three FWIW.

The player came from the same league as Jenkins. Senior footballer there = Thirds footballer at outer suburbs Melbourne league. This is my judgement based on one player that was not Jenkins.

Relevance of the second paragraph to any of my post?
