Ross Lyon - what a coach

good coach but people have seriously overrated his year.
Fremantle could barely field a team for the last half of last year. their list is good so improvement was inevitable.
i dont think Harvey would have done much worse, if any.
Lyon can better motivate his players, probably because he is a better communicator. For that reason I don't think Lyon would have allowed Melbourne to thrash us by 90 points last year in Round 13. That is the difference.

Good coach but will never be a premiership coach. You can't win a flag with Zac Dawson in your side for starters. I thought he would have learnt that first time round, obviously not.

Morabito, Fyfe, Sandilands...

They played about 13 minutes of good football and only lost by 10 points. In a final. That would tend to indicate they'll be pretty good.

Ridiculous statement - You get beaten by 10 or 20 goals if you only play 13 minutes of good footy.

You're dreaming.

Under Lyon, Freo's win-loss ratio in Melbourne is 83% (5 out of 6).

"Before Lyon arrived, Melbourne was a graveyard for Fremantle, who lost a staggering 27 of their 29 games in Victoria between round 8, 2007 up until Mark Harvey's axing at the end of 2011."

It's hard to call on Harvey - the list is another year more mature than the list he had last year- he would have had a different game plan yes, but with all the players back that were out last year we just cannot say how he would have done.

That said I have never seen a team as well drilled as Freo in the EF - it was scary stuff

Fremantle and Ross Lyon deserve a flag.

No one deserves a flag. You earn it. Please don't tell Carlton supporters this, as they of course believe the deserve flags on an ongoing basis.

Different club, same coaching deficiencies in both his overall coaching plan and game day strategies.

As at St Kilda, a frenzied defence, with gut running defend at all costs attitude, a single (once again injured) forward as your primary focus, get an early lead and hope like hell, that you can hang on while the team fatigues and the opposition starts to come back at you.

He promises so much, you will improve and play more finals, but his plan is flawed. Other teams can and will work it out and you dont have a plan B. Lyin only has the one plan. If success for Freo is playing finals, he will be perfect for you. If you want to go on and win a premiership, he cannot fulfil that.

So he can win a qualifying final and preliminary final, not to mention home and away games against other top four clubs, but somehow the way he coaches just can't win a GF?

Sorry but this would have to be one of the dumbest posts I have seen in over 10 years on BigFooty.

Agreed. His brand of footy clearly wins finals.

Ultimately the Milne bounce that cost you the premiership was our gain. Ross would still be saints coach if you'd won.

I reckon Mark Harvey would've moved Alex Silvagni away from Taylor Walker before the 28 minute mark of the last quarter

Luke McPharlin didn't play, but Ross Lyon still had Zac Dawson and Michael Johnson to call upon.

Sometimes even coaching geniuses can make mistakes.

When will the Saints supporters and other supporters get over this anti Lyon Bay13 shit. Alot of the comment here is typical of posters not watching our games with balance and insight and the "Awww geez its freo crap" mentality.

Harvs along with other staff, recruiting, development and football management gave us the foundations. Harvs knocked off the rough edges and got rid of the dickhead players but he could not carry it thru on gameday with a match winning game plan nor could he react during games.

Lyon has taken the foundation and built upon it a legitimate game plan that works (thus far) we're winning interstate games and winning our home games. He has also further developed the culture and added a hard edge, no nonsense edge. But for the finals traveling we could legitimately argue we be playing Hawks next wk (making up numbers tho).

Premiership well thats pretty much depending upon the day and injuries. He's been there twice.

bitter saints fans are bitter

Wow there is a revelation, that bitter supporters of one team are bitter. Here is a tip for you, bitter supporters of any team are bitter.

Point is, Lyon's 'dishonesty' is a completely separate matter to the quality of his coaching. Plenty of Saints supporters can't distinguish the two.

There is actually some truth to it, just have a look at the 2009 Grand Final, we were all over Geelong in the first half and had a lead at half time but then as our players tired due to Lyon's relentless defensive game plan Geelong ran over the top of us in the 2nd half to win the game. The exact same thing happened with Freo against Adelaide on Friday night.

I don't know where you get that idea, Lyon left to go to Freo for more money so whether he won a premiership at St Kilda or not it probably wouldn't have changed his decision to leave.

Think you should face facts it was your players choking that cost you those two grand finals. Lyon did everything he could.

And your players choked to lose a semi final so what's your point?

You would have thought Freo had just won a premiership under Lyon the way some of their supporters are carrying on. The fact is Freo still haven't achieved more under Lyon that what we achieved under him. Lyon is a good coach but he still has his faults, he isn't perfect and St Kilda supporters know that as well as anyone.
There were mistakes he made when he was coaching at St Kilda that Saints supporters were critical of like his team selections, matchday coaching moves etc so we aren't just criticising him now because he left the way he did and we're bitter.

Freo supporters seem to take offence at any criticism of Lyon but he does make mistakes, leaving Silvagni on Walker for so long was a mistake in my opinion and many other people watching the game. I also thought Kepler Bradley should have played ahead of Zac Clarke too. Both those decisions or non decisions may well have cost Freo the game.

Then how do you explain the wins in qualifying finals, prelims, and several other tough wins v Geelong, Collingwood and the Dogs in home and away games?

I don't know where you get that idea, Lyon left to go to Freo for more money so whether he won a premiership at St Kilda or not it probably wouldn't have changed his decision to leave.

He meant that St Kilda wouldn't have stuffed around giving him an extension.
