Yeah hopefully another year of transition.

No offense to Howe, Morrison, Sheils and Phillips (all terrific depth in a strong squad and will play a lot of games, especially with covid chaos) but hopefully they are not in our best 22 by the end of the year.

A pre season show down in the centre sqaure will also be worth watching

Reeves, O'meara, Worple, Mitchell
Vs
Lynch, McGuiness, Nash, Newcomb
(Mcdonald, Ward, Butler)
Possibles vs Probables will be good this year.

Lynch, Maginness, Nash, Ward, Newcombe, Macdonald, Butler and so on midfield wise

Reeves, O'Meara, Worpel, Mitchell, Shiels?, Howe and so on.

Got a feeling some blokes are too far back to start r1.
I've written of Day at this stage, and CJ may struggle too. Neither have had any pre season at all. No point rushing in blue chip long term investments for R1 unless they are cherry ripe.
Agreed. I think our side around rounds six or seven might have four or five changes as we start to fold in some players that have started from a little way back this pre-season. I think that also goes for our draftees as well, unless they are absolutely shooting the lights out.

FB: Hardwick -DGB - Sicily
HB: CJ - Frost - Impey
C: Day - Worpel - Bramble
HF: Moore - Kositcke - Wingard
FF: Bruest - Lewis - Gunston
R: Reeves, O’Meara, Mitchell
IC: Ward, Maginess, Scrimshaw, Brockmen,
Sub:Butler

What happened to Nash? Did he get hurt?
Nah, I think he is fine. I was just trying to stir SYL into providing an explanation for why he has demoted Nash to the BH bench. I can understand why he won't get a guernsey in everyone's starting 22 - there is just so much competition for places. It is also easy to understand why others (like me) reckon he showed enough playing as a mid in the latter part of the 2021 season to indicate he will be an important part of the midfield in 2022. What I don't understand is why he does not even make the starting 18 in SYL's BH team and, instead, gets put on the bench with a kid who has never even played a game of AFL football.

I really wouldn’t get hung up on it, it was an exercise in how tough it is to come up a best 22.

Most of forward and back lines pick themselves.

Forwards: Gunston, Breust, Kosi, Lewis, Chad, Moore, Brockman. Chad may play more midfield (which could give an opp to eg Seamus but more likely we just fit a hbf or another mid in side)

Backs: Sicily, Impey, Hardwick, Day, CJ, Scrim + 2 of Frost/Hartigan/DGB. One of flankers has to play up ground (eg CJ/Day) or be squeezed out (scrim?). I think it will be frost and DGB but not sure if DGB has body yet.

Rucks: Reeves and BB. Assume aim will be reeves to carry 60%+ of load and BB. We’re a bit tall with 3 talls already in fwd and backline - chance we look to go smaller.

Midfield: Under Clarko the group would have been Tom, JOM, worpel, shiels, chad (fwd) and howe, Phillips on wings. Saw some signs late season Nash and Bramble should be in mix. This is area I really hope Mitchell makes some changes. The challenging part is who falls out. But we need to find a mix that complements well, rather than our best individuals that don’t really work as a group. I also don’t think Mitchell cares much for accumulation and wants hardness plus ability to attack/score. We also need to find a way to get more pressure around the ball - teams got far too many easy clearances against us.

I like the mix of Nash (big body), Mitchell (accumulator), wingard (class), shiels (flexible) and one of Jai/Finn (but prob will be JOM) + bramble and one of flankers on other wing (CJ?). Despite decent seasons hard to see howe/Phillips being first picked if we want to play more attacking footy.

Putting it together:

Hardwick Frost DGB
Day Sicily Impey
Bramble Mitchell CJ
Moore Lewis Gunston
Breust Kosi Brockman
Reeves Nash Wingard
I: BB Shiels Scrim JOM/Finn/Jai

I actually think Big boy will not be our first ruck or captain in 2022. I feel he will rotate between AFL and VFL after the first few AFL games. Mentoring and supporting a new captain and our developing ruckmen.

B Hardwick Frost Sicily
H Scrimshaw Barrass Jaith
C Day Mitchell Bramble
R Reeves O'Meara Worpel
H Wingard Koschitzke Impey
F Moore Lewis Bruest
I Newcombe, Brockman, Shiels McEvoy

In the mix Jeka, Maginness, Hartigan Downie, Lynch, S.Mitchell, Howe, Morris, Callow, Gunston, Nash, Ward, MacDonald, Butler,

That would be my preference also. However, I expect him to go around another year as captain. He did a good job in difficult circumstances last year and seems to have the support of the players. We rarely appoint captains for a single year.

As for your 22, Gunston will certainly play if fit. I have Nash slightly ahead of Newcombe. There is a lot of pre-season yet. I will be paying close attention to training form and form in the pre-season hitouts before having another stab and my starting 22. As you indicate, there are a dozen or so players in the mix for a berth.

Aren’t they recovering from injury?
They were on programs prior to Christmas, doing handball drills, boxing and bike work but there’s almost 3 months to our first game.

Agree if Gunston is fit he will be in, just not sure how far he has progressed so far.

Under normal circumstances i would agree with you re: Captain McEvoy.

The reason i think McEvoy will be replaced as Captain is i can not see him playing in 2023. An Sam will want McEvoy to show the new Captain the ropes, plus new chapter, new coach and new Captain all starting a new era together on the same page.
