He was pretty good last weekend. He started fast last year and dropped away. This year if that happens we have cover for him.
Yeah, I don't want Ross starting in general, but given it's the first match and Pou has only played their during the pre-season, they might try for the 'safe' option. Going forward ross is not in the best team, but the position we find ourselves in with injury, he
Any word on Phillipou and his hip? Did he train today?
He didn’t train today…just worked on the bike!
Butler, Sinclair, Windhager, Jones & Hayes trained

Saw a picture of Windy training today. Surely that makes him a lock for this game?
Would think a glove would cover him to play. Hands dont seem to keep players out for very long.

How has Crouch looked lately? Not on injury list but didnt play in either practice match. Will he be right to play?

He was doing a conditioning block. I hope that means he will be right to go.

Be interesting to see if Jones gets a game here. Feels like the perfect chance for him really. We know he's pretty good on the first game up, and we have a huge need for midfielders with Dow, Clark, Clark and possibly Phillipou/Windy out.

With several returning probably for round two, it feels like a bit of a free swing with Jones if it doesn't work out.

It would be risk that the powers that be may not be prepared to take.
Jones has had an extremely interrupted preseason & didn’t play in either practice match.
Although Crouch didn’t play either, at least he played in the match sim & performed well.
Windhager, Phillipou and Sinclair will be an interesting watch next week at training!

Well after watching the Opening Round (well almost half of a round really!) it reinforced to be really competitive this season, and beyond, that some key qualities are speed of ball movement, accurate ball movement, running capacity and speed as well as great and aggressive team play.

I believe RTB and Co has the last two ticking along nicely.

With the first three, our 2024 list changes, plus those of the previous two years, have improved all three aspects.

This may give us the edge we need against the Cats even if we are missing some of our Best 22 players, including our best player in Sinclair.

Now Gresh had some good points, including clearance winning ability but he had lost pace and distance in his kicking, was not a good kick anyway and team play was a concept that he either could not grasp, or just did not have the ability to accurately assess what the best team option actually should be. Henry for what we need is un upgrade, and really suits how we St Kilda will need to play in 2024 if we want to make finals.

Henry, Bonner, Wilson, Dow, should all help to make us more competitive this year. We have some other exiting kids, but I suspect that they will have more impact from 2025 on. Though Garcia has been impressive. Wilson looks capable of being handy this season.

Moreso if NWM, Owens, Windy, Sharman, Byrnes and King can all continue to become better.

Stocker, I am not sure will get better , but in the here and now he provides a good and solid back option.

For 2024, if Membrey can rediscover his old form and his two practice matches suggests that he can, then that is going to be a good plus for this season.

Round 1 Side (May forget someone) just trying to guage for each side, so i come in peace

Battle - Cordy - Wilkie
NWM - Bonner - Sinclair (Stocker)

Hill - Steele - Wood (Byrnes)
ROMA - Crouch - Windhaeger (S.Ross)

L.Henry - Membrey - Pou (D.Wilson)
Owens - King - Higgins

H.Clark*
D.Howard*
Butler*
Webster*
Paton*

Assumed all unavailable

Id like to see Sinc as a full time mid, but maybe without a few defenders he is eased back there to start as Ross is a better cover in the midfield

Still think Zak Jones at 28 would offer something? Isnt he tough, quick, agile, can play half back or onball, breaks lines and should be in the peak of his powers

Good to hear re Phillipou.

ST KILDA

Round 1: v Geelong at GMHBA, Saturday, 7.30pm

Injury concerns: Dual best-and-fairest winner Jack Sinclair remains touch-and-go to face Geelong and will need to get through training next week after a calf issue. Marcus Windhager is in the same boat after a hand injury. Young star Mattaes Phillipou should be good to go despite recent hip soreness.

Selection questions: The Saints look settled on playing a forward half that includes Tim Membrey, Max King and Mitch Owens as targets, leaving Anthony Caminiti on the outer. With Jimmy Webster suspended, Riley Bonner will surely play.

I'd argue that whilst Sinclair is probably our best player (in 2023) he is not the most important player in the team.

Marshall, Steele and Wilkie are all far more important.

Yup, between Bonner, Wood, NAS, Hill, Byrnes, Henry and possibly Wilson, we are covered for quick ball movement & spread across the ground.
