All the reports from pre-season training were that Ty was clunking the marks and regularly beating Rance in the air, yet come pre-season game time he was fairly lackadaisical and didn't impress many. I have a leaning towards the holding back for the real thing conspiracy theory.

When has White ever racked up a heap of possessions? He's only had 20+ touches 5 times over his whole career.

Speed =/= ball winning ability.

White would probably still be ahead of Knights for R1 selection though due to the difference in game time each has had over the pre season.

I'd just add that Knights has proven on a number of occasions that he can get a lot more ball than White has shown he can

Nah Rance is just shit...

:p

White has experienced a relatively successful NAB Cup campaign IMO, and has surprisingly amassed above average possessions. He was named amongst the best players in our final tw rounds of the pre-season comp, against Hawthorn and WB!

As you mentioned above, Knights is yet to prove himself, but from actual sources I know (regular attendees of Woodville West Torrens FC matches), Knights looked considerably sluggish last season.....hence his limited opportunities mustered with the Adelaide FC.

Has anyone seen Knights in any training/prac matches/preseason ? The limited amount (once) I think I saw him he did look to lack any real pace (did look sluggish). I put it down to need for training etc. Has anyone seen enough of him to say there has been improvement ?

Carlton vs Richmond MCG

Richmond.

Relatively good preseason (NAB) with some stand outs both good and negative. The good is the players recently picked up. Theses players include Petterd, Orren and Vlastuin. But in saying this nearly every player looks good in the preseason.. I mean look at Adam Maric for example. Dustin Martin has been smashing up the track even though the media are taking pot shots from nowhere at him. Pressure on Richmond to succeed is maybe not as high as previous years but Cotchin being at the top of the bookies list for the brownlow and the loss of the nab cup by Carlton has increased the uncertainty of this game with may of the media changing there view point of who will win this game.

Carlton
New coach Mick is trying to install the same structure he had at Collingwood which saw some success in the NAB but failed miserable against the lions as the players just looked out of it. One will argue this will change in the main season and it probably will, but this pressure to play as a top four team may collapse on them with this new structure that there not used to. New captain Murphy was knocked down flat and no team member came to his side but if it was Judd it would be a different story. Coming from a non-blues fan I believe Murphy has not earns the respect of his team mates as a captain where as Cotchin has and he was being groomed since he stepped onto punt rd and Murphy hasn't really had that attention(saying this I don't know the insides of the blues camp so it is an outside perspective).

I believe the game will be won in the midfield and what teams lower ranking players play better will be crucial.

I am a firm believer you stop Judd and you are half way done in your attempt to stop Carlton. Nearly ever game we play Judd comes alive for 10 mins and Carly's the team to victory. Also the prevention of Betts and Garllet is crucial hence us bringing in Morris and Petterd.

Best side for round one

Morris, Chaplin, Griffiths
Houli, Rance, Petterd
Lids, Conca, Newman
Dustin, vickery, s.Edwards
Nahas, Reiwoldt, a. Edwards

Ruck Maric, Cotchin Grigg

Bench: Ellis, king, vlas
Sub longeran

Hate to say it but Carlton by 24 pts with a Judd inspired burst in the fourth

I'm astounded by the amount of people who think Jackson won't get a game. Or that Vlastuin will replace him.

Vlastuin has played 0 AFL games.

Jackson is in the leadership group. He's there for a reason. Maybe you don't see what he does, but it's obvious the players and coaches do. He's a big body who can run all day and often matches up on the other team's best player.

And also, Matt White??? Really?? He hasn't really looked like he belongs in the AFL yet, now on the back of a couple of good pre-season games, everyone has him in the side? Do you guys not remember Adam Maric last season?? Looked good in the NAB Cup and VFL, yet when he played AFL and the intensity stepped up he couldn't have looked more out of place?? I predict a similar story with Whitey, IF he gets a game.

I think Tyrone will play Rd 1. Last year we had Post playing in the preseason games and not doing much (oh oh here comes MadTiger), but we still gave him a shot in Rd 1 (and he was terrible). So I expect we'll persist with plan A for the Carlton game.

As for the result, well we regularly get reamed by bloody Betts and Garlett. I personally don't think Carlton's talls are much chop. They do have good onballers though (but so are ours). Stop those little guys kicking goals out of their asses and we win. I really reckon it's that simple.

On the basis of pre-season form and injuries this is the list of 22

Newman Deledio Martin Maric Grigg Jack Cotchin Edwards King Nahas Tuck Conca White Morris Houli Ellis Vlastuin Mcguane Rance Griffiths Chaplin Petterd : squad of 22

Which means the following miss out, Jackson, Vickery, A Edwards. C Knights, Batchelor, Arnott, Stephenson.
Foley, Astbury, Grimes injured

The depth is building

of the 22 we have Deledio, Martin, Grigg, Cotch, S Edwards, Tuck, Conca, White, Ellis, Vlaustin thats 9 midfield rotation contenders

Only 1 ruckman, with chopouts from Mcguane and Griffiths.

Team from selection

FB Morris Chaplin Griffiths
HB Houli Rance Petterd
C Grigg Tuck Ellis
HF King Deledio Edwards
FF Mcguane Jack Nahas
Foll Maric Cotch Martin
IC White Conca Newman Sub: Vlastuin

Emergency Vickery Jackson Arnott
Agree...only 1 ruck which is Maric however Vic's with be in the side to support Ivan resting up forward

I hear what you are saying but you could use the same words you used about White for Jackson. They are both fairly ordinary players. It's just that one of them can speak French!

The gap in talent between Jackson and White is way closer than between Jackson and Cotchin / Deledio / Martin.

I'm not sure the new game plan helps their small forwards. I think the run and gun down the middle and get it in quick suited them more. Will be interesting to see! They don't have the quality talls (especially with Waite out) to play the kick long around the boundary style either IMO!

Here's my round one side:
B: Morris Chaplin Batchelor
HB: Petterd Rance Houli
M: Girgg Tuck Newman
HF: Martin Vickery Knights
F: S.Edwards Riewoldt Nahas
Foll: Maric Cotchin Deledio
Int: Vlastuin, Jackson, Ellis, Conca
EMG: Griffiths, King, A.Edwards
We don't need Griffiths, Carlton don't really have 3 decent KF and Batchelor could take one if he had to.
Jackson will defintley be named, as much as you guys might hate him, I can't see us dropping him.
I also think we won't play three KF's and leave Edwards out.

Anyone who thinks Ty won't be in the side for round 1 is deluded - He'll line up at CHF and provide relief to Maric in the ruck at times, regardless of preseason form. I think the round 1 side will look like:

FB Morris Chaplin Griffiths
HB Houli Rance Ellis
C Grigg Deledio Newman

HF Martin Vickery S. Edwards
FF Mcguane Reiwoldt King
Foll Maric Cotchin Tuck
IC Conca Jackson Nahas Sub: Vlas

We're really starting to build some depth - could make cases for Pettard and White over Jackson and Nahas, and Foley and Grimes will be locks when fit
