Autopsy Round 10, 2021: Hawks get beat by Blues

I don’t think we’ll see Impey move further up. Too valuable off the half back line and clearly his best position. Keen to see Scrim play more midfield minutes but I don’t think it makes best use of his aerial pressure. Not sure answer to our problems...

Impey will get pushed down the pecking order for a spot in defence when Sicily, Day and Grainger-Barras all come back. That would be time to play him in the midfield.

Kudos to Hartigan who played one of the best 4 possession games I have seen recently. He is largely unappreciated on this board but he does a job on the big forwards most weeks and did so again today.

My first sentence was stolen from a commentator on the Kayo stream who said during the match that Harts had probably played his best 2 possession game or words to that effect.

Our backline did as well as we could expect bearing in mind the number of inside 50s with which they must contend every week.

First game ive been too since 2018 , took my girl to her first game . So was great , she loves CJ so reckon I have her rusted on now.

From the cheap seats I got a pretty good view of the ground set up , a few things I really live .

- our players at stoppages getting sucked in , Carlton the get the ball outside and well we had noone there . Happened often and I think it cost us 3-4 goals .
- 5-6 times we had a really good set of play off half back only to take a safe option , when we had a really attacking option .
Carlton were well out of position but we allowed the time for them to get back and set up .
I reckon Will Day would have taken the tougher option each time if playing , it cost us great scoring opportunites.

A few players I will highlight
Watched Kosi closely . He has some really good physical attributes , deceptively quick and a few times had his opponant burnt.
He just needs experience and Gunston playing with him teaching him the ropes.
Often doesnt lead , or leads too early and gets caught out of position.
I would be sticking with him as he may just be a very dangerous 2nd-3rd tall forward option as we get better.

Reeves was great - he should be a play every week from now on . Looks nimble for his size and not bad with ball in hand .
Good selection and he grabbed it .

Anyway onwards on upwards , we have a real crack but our basic skill and decision is very poor .
Sadly if we gave the effort last week we gave today , we probably beat the Roos by 5 goals .

Impey did well in the midfield during his cameos the two previous weeks. I was disappointed he didn't get a run in there today.

He's probably the only player we can stick in there that combines a bit of speed and grunt.

Reeves was great. Loved the contested grabs. He's a future Gawn. Has to play every game.

And people potting Mitchell can get stuffed. Watched him today bust his absolute arse for this club. Reality is our midfield would be stuffed without him. Put his head in the hole all day. 44 hard earned touches. Gave everything he had.

And he probably gave those 8 clearances straight back. How many turnovers did he have. Think it was double figures, and that is not counting the passes that team mates have to risk everything to sit under.
Needs more hyperbole.

The lack of desire for our players to sheppard drove me bonkers. Frost got the ball on the wing with 80 metres of space in front of him and all Hanrahan had to do was be a nuisance to the chasing opponent yet he chose to run away from Frost 🤦‍♀️
I was tearing my hair out
Drives me spare too.

Extremely accurate this one. At every stoppage I could call which Carlton player would get the ball. Our mids always tend to find themselves on the same ****ing side as each other and ultimately get beaten.

Also I couldn't count the amount of times the ball went out the back in the second half and none of our players were there. Could've slotted a few from them.

Hopefully they learn.

Carlton were slightly less sh*t than we were. Can’t fault the effort and intensity but our skills and decision making when it matters are VFL standard.

Good debut from Ned and Ollie showed some positive signs. Another great effort from Hartigan and Frost as well as Dimma.

If we don’t win next week I can’t see where our next win will come from.

Ollie? I've never said anything about him... but I will now, he's not an AFL footballer. Like its done.

First live game I have been to in a long time and you certainly get a different perspective on the match.

Positives.
1.Carlton are almost as ordinary as we are!
2. Scrimmers is a very good footballer
3. Reeves looks the goods, he plays the rest of the year.
4. The players really put in, cant fault their effort
5. Bruest looked a lot sharper than he had all season

Negatives
1. We play the boundary line a lot. On a ground as wide as the MCG that makes a very long, long trip to traverse the ground. I have to think the players are being instructed to take this option as Carlton use ld the middle a lot more than we did.
2. Our forward line entries are still 🤢
3. We get very few easy goals. That is why we struggle to kick more than 8 to 10 a game

Pretty standard issues we have seen all year to be honest.

The three things I identified before the game that we don't want to see we saw right from the first bounce. Not surprise we lost.

Whenever we got the ball in the first quarter, we turned straight to the boundary. Wasn't as bad after that, but majority of the time, we go to the safety of the boundary to bring the ball up. The worst thing about that, though, is that the few times we did run it through the center, Carlton were exposed... even with our shocking skill level.

Once again, the opposition defense sat 3 defenders in front of our tall forwards and killed the predicable high ball with ease. Meanwhile there was space galore 40m out from goal that no player ever went into.

Once again, went went to one of two kickout positions and once again, neither of them were long. Why we wait until we're dead men walking late in the fourth before we try to go up the middle from a kickout is astoundingly poor. We don't have the skills to safely take it from the D50 to the F50.

Can't fault the effort this week. Skills and gameplan are where the fault lies.

Reeves got a good awakening to the difference between VFL plodders and AFL rucks. Needs a long stretch of games to adapt. Showed some good signs.

This ticketing system can get stuffed. Ended up in the same bay as the blues cheer squad.

If we give that sort of effort for the rest of the year , I'd be pretty happy. First time seeing Reeves and was pretty impressed. Bit of shame we couldn't apply more scoreboard pressure in the 2nd half because I thought we controlled our fair of the share of the play.

Also, well done to Hartigan who was fantastic on McKay
