Autopsy Round 10, 2023: GWS v St.Kilda

Hopefully they are working to improve their goal kicking as it has cost us wins in the past and could have cost us another win yesterday.

We really should have won that game comfortably with all the chances we had but instead it was uncomfortable and stressful right until the end.

The positives were that our two main strikers King and Higgins were both pretty accurate, Higgins with 3 goals straight and King with just the one miss.

Not sure if its been mentioned but whoever took Tom Green out of the equation needs a massive rap.

Was it Seb?

I had a quick look at the replay and checked who was on him at centre bounces. For the first three quarters they rotated through Ross, Crouch, Steele, Gresham and Clark. In the last quarter it was Steele pretty much the whole quarter.

Sinclair currently sitting equal 6th in the comp, Wilkie equal 8th.

Well that’s ok - but get Sinclair into the midfield and Ross to half back/sub.

No more wasting elite talent in the back half - get Sincs involved in the action - a clear upgrade from Ross
I'd be okay with Seb out for either of Windhager or Bytel but I've got a feeling Seb's file is stamped "not to be dropped". Time will tell.

Interesting that Marshall was rated so highly I thought Keiran Briggs had a reasonably good game.

The other obvious is how well our defence played and only Wilkie got a mention?.

It's interesting that plenty of people on here are rating Clark's performances at various times, but he still hasn't been in the top 5 players on the ground for the coaching staff at any point. Same for Stocker and Caminiti.

Interesting that RoMA currently has I believe 23 coaches' votes to English's 20. English definitely having the better season but there isn't all that much to split them and English seems to be the consensus AA pick at present.

Watching afterwards without the emotion, I thought it was a cracking game. Both teams pressure was extremely high all game and this, and the dodgy surface affected the disposal somewhat.

Clark to me is easily top ten. He looks like a mummy's boy but is as tough as nails. Has had his jaw smashed, a compound fracture of the nose, and he doesn't hesitate to crack in, and in most cases against their toughest inside mids. More often than not he gets the ball going Pur way under tremendous pressure.
His importance to the team is severely underrated in my opinion.

Amazing how you can feel different watching a game on replay compared to live. It was a high standard game, goal kicking aside. Both teams defences struggled at time when the ball transitioned quickly. Agree on Clark. I doubt he'll ever be a 30 possession mid unless he can build his tank. But 20-25 touches from him considering they are usually contested will do me.

GWS are underachieving, they have run some good teams close this season. They have a pile of talent still.

Yet another team (along with the bombers and blues) who were complete morons for not chasing ross the boss.

*It was good to see gresh kick a ball 50 meters (despite the shot missing).
To me it looked like he's been watching jack higgins- he throws his entire body weight into his long kicks, and it's very effective.
Hopefully we see gresh starting to do that more often too.

*It was good to win despite ross, clark and crouch all playing pretty poorly.

*We got lucky they came into the game undersized, and then copped more major problems.

*As I've been banging on about for a year now..... Sinclair is a mid.
A very very good one.
Gun halfbacks are easy to find/develop compared to gun mids.
It's idiocy it's taken this long for him to be given proper midfield time.
Sinclair had 20 possies and a goal in a half playing as a mid in round 1 of last year v the pies.

And was virtually never put there again for the rest of the year.

try listening oon the radio . that was horrible. i was out for the first quarter and only SEN had it on, i had to turn it off it was that bad.
I was driving home for the first 20 mins. Worst commentary I've ever heard.

Dwayne and Lynchy were barracking for GWS on the TV commentary.
Dwayne, Lynch and Johnson are the worst trio going around for Saints games. Dwayne just says the same things over and over; and he doesn't know half our players names. Lynch can't actually string a sentence together. Johnson is so obviously salty about us and surly whenever anything goes well for the Saints.

I watched Whitfield closely, he was pretty average, not much of what he did had impact. I was surprised he had so many touches.

Totally agree about Whitfield being low impact against us.

But in years past we have pined for a rebounding distributor with an exquisite kick and good pace, like a prime Whitfield.

I’m pretty sure we have found our man.

We rejoiced when Sinclair showed he’s more than capable down back. But with every week Naz is showing us that he’s the best man for the job, and thereby creating the space for Sinclair and Hill to take on different roles.

Almost half a season in and we’re ranked first for contested possessions and with a pretty decent gap as well. I expect that to drop a little bit with Owens out but that’s a great effort so far.

Yeah we got lucky with Haynes going off with concussion early in the game, he is one of their most important and experienced defenders.

That got evened out though when we lost Owens with concussion shortly afterwards and he was looking really dangerous up forward.

As for Sinclair, I agree that he should be used more in the midfield, not only is he a good midfielder, he is capable of kicking goals too.

He kicked 2 important goals yesterday and that was the final margin in the end so if they left him back at half back we may not have won that game.

hopefully, Owens is only out for 1 match.

Agree. He has 4 goals for the year so far. Marshall + Steele + Crouch + Ross have 6 between them. Would love to see those four kick goals a bit more regularly.
