1:45pm Saturday June 1st 2013, Etihad Stadium
Broadcast Information (Melbourne only): Fox Footy 1:30pm, Channel 7 3:00pm (90 minute delay)
Last time they met:
: 15.20 110
GWS: 6.7 43
Brownlow Votes: 3: S.Hampson, 2: M Robinson, 1: M Murphy
With only one previous meeting during the regular season (round 6, 2012) Carlton boast an impressive 1-0 winning record over the Giants. The result was as expected although GWS certainly came to play trailing by 25 at 3 quarter time although Carlton ended up running all over the Giants in the 4th quarter to eventually win by 67. For the Blues Robinson & Murphy did most of the damage through the midfield while Hampson booted 3, for GWS Toby Greene was their major ball winner while former Blue Setanta looked dangerous up forward before getting injured and having to be subbed out.
2013 Form:
Last 5
Carlton - WWLWW
GWS - LLLLL
GWS as most would have expected have struggled so far failing to register a win in their 1st 9 games of 2013. Adam Treloar & Callan Ward have been GWS' major ball winners throughout the season while up forward it's been Jeremy Cameron who has been incredibly impressive with 25 goals for the year so far.
Carlton have had an up and down start to the year with form difficult to read at times. The usual suspects Marc Murphy and Chris Judd have starred through the midfield in 2013 while down back Jamison and Henderson have constantly improved and Walker has provided a fantastic rebounding option out of defence. Up forward Garlett has been in career best form and will look to continue on his great work.
Match Overview:
With the last game Carlton played against one of the new expansion sides ending Ratten's tenure as coach of the club the Blues will not want to let their guard down for one moment, it was only 2/3 weeks ago that GWS lead Essendon at half time and we certainly would not want to see a repeat of that. Carlton may use this chance to rest some players especially with two blockbusters coming up in the following 2 weeks against Essendon & Hawthorn. If Carlton do choose to give a few players a rest it presents the opportunity for a few players to return from injury (Carrazzo & Yarran) or if they aren't ready the club may choose to play a few younger players (Menzel, Watson, Buckley, Casboult).
Key Matchups
Midfield vs Midfield - GWS certainly has a great mixture of grunt and energy through their young midfield (Ward, Treloar, Coniglio, Shiel, Whitfield) although they are prone to making costly skill errors from time to time. With a potential midfield of Robinson, McLean, Bell, Curnow & Cachia Carlton certainly won't be lacking for inside midfielders while Murphy and Gibbs provide class on the outside. Carlton will also need to be wary of the Giants' midfielders pushing forward to score a few goals. Curnow may get the job to run with Scully while Carrazzo or Cachia will most likely get the tagging job on Ward.
Jamison/Henderson vs Cameron - Cameron has been the Giants major avenue to goal and if Carlton's tall defenders can get on top of him it will make life extremely difficult for GWS up forward.
Gilham/Mohr vs Waite - Conversely GWS will need to get on top of Waite to have any chance however unless they manage to mark most of Carlton's forward 50 entries the crumbing power of the Blues will be a major headache for the Giants.
Garlett vs anyone - Good luck to whoever is on him, they'll need it.
This game will be one of the games of the century that you won't want to miss, there are strong rumours Etihad has already been sold out and they are predicting this will be the most viewed event on television this decade.
