Begg against Darcy in the wet?
I would rather we didn't break him against the physically strong types.
It wont break him. He'll break if we expect him to beat his opponent. In reality, we expect a contest at ground level and that's what he brings. That's his role. Experience like that can only help his development.

What’s the chances of Elliott playing this week?We have missed him terribly the last six weeks.

Why are you all so keen to drop Macrae? Earned an opportunity with good form in the VFL, receiving coaches votes in 4 of his last 5 starts. Give him a proper crack to find his feet. Dropping him after a quarter of footy can't do much for the confidence. God, the Brown brothers seem to get infinite chances.

If he wasn’t best 22 last week and we need to find room for the likes of Elliot and Pendlebury, it stands to reason he’d be a chance to go back to the VFL to continue his development.

For all the talk of only drafting mids - the only good mid we've drafted since Beams in 2008 is JDG, and he's a forward convert to the midfield.

If we are going to eliminate the other way we brought mids into the club in the meantime, (Adams, Greenwood, Treloar, Beams) at least we can give Luke Ball the recognition he deserves :D

Looked lost out there.

Given at this stage there is gonna be 15-30mm of rain on sunday... would that alter your selection ideas?
Go small rather than tall? Not bring in cox and give Begg another week because he is good below his knees on the ground?

I don’t think the rain matters much if the intention is to play Cox primarily as a ruck. In fact, slippery wet conditions might even make him more effective as a tap ruckman given his height/reach advantage.

So I WOULD bring in Cox to play ruck, not forward. Cameron to play FF and cover in ruck when Cox is resting on the bench.

Can’t believe people are suggesting McCreery goes out. Until there is someone else in the side that is lightning quick and hits like a truck he stays in. Finally a genuine defensive pressure prospect, as opposed to incumbents from years before where defensive pressure was merely code for adequate (not good) at applying pressure and incapable of winning the ball themselves.

McCreery only had 3 touches and 0 tackles. He didn't do a lot of hitting like a truck at all. I mostly saw him looking at players backs as they got away. I like McCreery a lot but he was really poor. I'd drop him unless there was a reason we're unaware of like he had the runs or whatever's going around.

I doubt bringing Cox in for Begg is going to make much difference. Might as well keep playing Begg, who unlike Cox has upside and will improve with exposure to senior footy.

I bet it would make a difference bringing in Cox. We might win some hitouts and see some contested marks down the line or up forward.

He’s a real mixed bag in that role. But 3 possessions and 0 tackles is very poor

In saying that I blame the coaches for letting him wilt there the other night… and not mixing it up and throwing him on ball.

We certainly needed an injection of physicality at the coal face

I wouldn't mind McCreery in the occassional run with role as the game dictates. Like the other week when Parish was getting off the hook. I think he'd go alright making someones afternoon miserable.

Considering he has averaged 22 disposals a game at VFL level, shows he is starting to develop his game nicely.
I'm not expecting him to get 30 to 35 disposals a game at VFL level yet, so what he is doing now is quite impressive.
His brother only averaged around 20 disposals a game at TAC cup level in his draft year. He became a major ball winner after getting a consistent run in the Bulldogs senior side, and his confidence started to grow....

I think it's also important to understand we're a low possession team in the VFL. Our game plan with the lower skilled more scrappy nature of VFL means our highest disposal winners rarely crack high disposal numbers even when we're winning. Averaging 22 touches is a really healthy return for Macrae. I actually really like Macraes game but can't articulate why. I think it will click one day for him and we'll have a player

I really like Murphy. I expect with games in the seniors he will improve. We need his intercept defender types in defence at the moment.
When Murphy played in the seniors, one thing I really liked about him was that he was a good judge of the flight of the ball in the air and he would often get both hands to the ball. He wouldnt mark it but he always looked like with a little more strength and softer hands he would pick up up about 5+ marks a game. If he could bring some decent marking skills at AFL level he would be a decent player.

Very true , but the Beige brothers are a protected species at Collingwood, reminds me of duck 🦆 opening and Laurie Levy

Isn’t that exactly the case? He and Ginnivan were ill all week and only appeared at the captain’s run.

Yeah i'm not sure. That may be a reason for the poor game. I think we'll know the answer at selection.

I noticed McCreery often sprinting after an opponent to apply pressure or to get to a contest farther away. It didn’t show in his stats but the effort was definitely there.

I think that’s just the way it goes as a small forward sometimes. He’s just as likely to get 15 touches and kick three goals this week.

I seriously hope we don’t drop him. McCreery offers way more than either Brown bro and at least as much as WHE or Poulter (of whom I am a fan). And he makes a great double-act with Ginni, who should be back this week.

McCreery's only preparation was a couple of running sessions at the captains run. I'd back him in to respond.

Absolutely no way would l be playing Begg against the Freo big men. If the coaching staff keep him in for this week, l think that would be really poor management of this young man, whose just starting his AFL career....
If they play him ..

Might be a good learning experience as well. He's not a natural ball winner so trailing someone who is might give him a lesson on where to run and position himself.

He’s been below average since he came back from injury, which is a shame because he was huge in the first couple of rounds. Was happy to give him some leeway to get back to his best, but a line has to be drawn, and he had donuts on the stat sheet until halfway through the third quarter last week. That’s not acceptable under any circumstance, so he needs to go back and find some form in the twos just like Henry had to.

Even at VFL, he just seems to drift around at half pace. Doesn't yet have the energy or intensity for AFL.
