Why are you all so keen to drop Macrae? Earned an opportunity with good form in the VFL, receiving coaches votes in 4 of his last 5 starts. Give him a proper crack to find his feet. Dropping him after a quarter of footy can't do much for the confidence. God, the Brown brothers seem to get infinite chances.
We have players coming back from injury, he wasn’t even in the 22 and when subbed on did nothing of note to stake a claim.

COLLINGWOOD

B: B.Maynard, D.Moore, J.Noble

HB: S.Pendlebury, J.Howe, I.Quaynor

C: S.Sidebottom, T.Adams, J.Daicos

HF: N.Daicos, B.Mihocek, J.De Goey

F: J.Ginnivan, M.Cox, J.Elliott

Foll: D.Cameron, P.Lipinski, J.Crisp

Inter: N.Murphy, C.Poulter, O.Henry, W.Hoskin-Elliott

In: S.Pendlebury, J.Elliott, J.Ginnivan, M.Cox, N.Murphy

Out: J.Madgen (shoulder), C.Brown (omit), B.McCreery (omit), A.Begg (omit), T.Brown (omit)

Expect plenty of changes for the Pies after their poor performance against the Bulldogs. All eyes will be on whether Jamie Elliott can prove his fitness after a long injury layoff. Jordan Roughead might still be an extra week out. Scott Pendlebury and Jack Ginnivan should be back from illness and return. Depending on the weather, Craig McRae will consider bringing back Mason Cox and resting Aiden Begg, while it might be one week too early but Nathan Murphy might be needed as cover in Jack Madgen’s absence.

^Not surprised. It's par for the course for us to lose at least one best 22 player every week.

Just occurred to me that English and Martin didn't play in the ruck last week and the young ruckman Sweet was playing his sixth game. So who was Cox rucking against in the VFL? Might have to take that into account when talking up his good form. 🤔

Their VFL ruck (Josh Patullo).. and Schache.

I don’t think anyones expecting that. But begg was always a long term prospect, he’s simply incapable of competing in the ruck. Cox can atleast compete.
It'll be interesting to see who we go with. I do think our players would be more confident kicking it long into the forward line to Cox or Cameron rather than Begg.

What about the thought of begg going up against Darcy, their midfield is top notch already

Out-of-favour big man Mason Cox is closing on a return to Collingwood’s senior team. When he does make a comeback, it will be as a ruckman first and foremost not a forward.

Cox is a strong chance to come back into the team as soon as this week as the Magpies manage the exposure of teenage ruck forward Aiden Begg in his first season.

Cox, who was dropped after losing all semblance of form in a loss to the Brisbane Lions at the Gabba in round five, has gone back to the VFL and played as first ruck and found some form. Last week he had 47 hit-outs, seven marks and 19 disposals.
The coaches left him in the VFL even after Brodie Grundy injured a PCL, which has sidelined him at length. With Grundy out, coach Craig McRae chose to give Begg his debut and leave Cox in the VFL.

McRae had said prior to the Grundy injury he had mapped out a plan with Cox to find form in the VFL. That plan involved him playing ruck , a position that some in football consider a better fit than key forward for a player who only took up the game in his 20s.
Collingwood sources said that it was unrealistic to think a young ruckman such as Begg in his first season could play 15 or so uninterrupted games in his first year, so it was inevitable Cox would come in again soon and give Begg a rest after a string of three or four games.

Collingwood is likely to bring Jamie Elliott back into the team to play Fremantle in Perth on Sunday night. While it is not completely ticked off, he is expected to be clear to play after overcoming a shoulder injury and building aerobic fitness in recent weeks.
Captain Scott Pendlebury and small forward Jack Ginnivan, who missed last match with illness, are likely to come into the team.

Defender Jack Madgen will be out at length after injuring his shoulder in the loss to the Bulldogs.
Veteran wingman Steele Sidebottom did not train on Tuesday, reportedly suffering the flu that has gone through the club in recent weeks, and therefore must be in some doubt for Sunday.

Early forecast looks pretty wet for the game. Could dictate selection. Freo didn't handle the conditions well against GC.
Still need another tall up front. The modern game is rarely badly impacted by rain and it rarely pelts down for the duration. Players will still mark the pill and talls can still present a target and give structure. A little slippery but that's okay.

Bring in Reef for Sidey if he's crook. Cox has earned his place back in the side. Stop the BS about managing Begg and the idea he is our developing ruckman! He is not a ruckman!

Common sense-lower the eyes going in but if under the pump the long bomb to a tall player is a far better option than one to midsized or small players. They can feed off the spillage.
Can't recall many times we feed off the spillage. In fact annoys me that we rarely have anyone at the drop of the ball.

Patullo and Schache + Darcy? You can only beat the opponent you're up against. Cox was good last week too with 30 odd hitouts and 3 goals. I'd bet he performs better than Begg if selected.

Cox needs to be given a go this week. Begg wouldn't be able to compete against the Freo big men, and it would be sending the lamb to the slaughter. Begg has a good future, but at the moment, imo, he is still a good 12 months away....
Cox has had a good 2 to 3 weeks at VFL level, and at least should be able to provide a contest in the ruck.
