To be clear I’m not saying turf Ross now, I’m not even saying he needs to make finals (again) in his 4 year term but he can’t just have a completely blank ledger on KPIs for the next 2 and 1/2 seasons, he needs to have some accountability and pressure somewhere.
What if - just as a hypothetical - the list was terrible and completely unbalanced at the start of a coach's 4 year contract?
What KPIs would you give a coach (or a list manager, for that matter) in that situation?
The problem with making those KPIs too short term is that you end up forcing them to play older players, stunt the development of kids, and trade for mediocre experienced players who'll paper over the cracks but not actually set strong foundations for the future. This is arguably what we've done for the past 13 years. We haven't wanted to "accept failure" so we've tried too hard to get short-term results at the cost of long-term success.
First thing to do when you find yourself at the bottom of a hole - stop digging.
We need to acknowledge what the situation is. If it's that the players are good but the coach is bad then sure, get rid of him. But I don't think there are many people out there who think we have a good list and it's just poorly coached. I think just about everyone realises the true position, even if they don't want to admit it.
So we just have to knuckle down and do what it takes for long term success. It's the only option at this point imo.
The next couple of years will be pain regardless of who the coach is. So I reckon RTB is as good as anyone else to be at the helm.
