Autopsy Round 13, 2013 - Hawthorn v Eagles

Hale gets a goal a game and Bails is coming along in leaps and bounds ...

These two playing well are so important ...

One of the reasons we lost the Grand final last year was that Roughy was cooked by then and Bailey didn't play.

His issue isn't the playing of two rucks, I think its the fact that we are playing two lumbering types of rucks. I also don't like both in the side either. For mine Bailey stays, but the second ruck needs to be athletic, that's where Grimely hopefully comes into the frame.

I thought Hale was an absolute liability Friday night against quality opposition (ruckman), he can't even jump anymore and when he's not getting a kick in our forward line he's nothing more than a witches hat.

Re the Strats incident:

Eagles coach John Worsfold, when asked if he was concerned about the incident, said: "The fact that you're raising it with me, yeah, I'm concerned.

"But I haven't seen it, so it will run its course."

Hawthorn coach Alastair Clarkson said he had not seen what happened.

These coaches don't see much from that coaching box..... makes you wonder what they are doing up there.... they mustnt look at the screens either..... ;-)
I think they must have attended the Arsene Venger school of coaching...

"I did not see it"

Just watched a fair bit of the replay and we are looking in good shape. We are getting smashed in the middle but the back end and forwards are in amazing form. The one thing I see quite often in the middle is that we are definitely managing our elite mids. Mitchell will come into the clearances later in the season. We are using Simpkin, Rough, Hill and a few others regularly in the centre square at the moment and I don't think you will see much of that in September. Oh yeah, Lake is a f*cking GUN of the highest order. He has been amazing the last 2 weeks.

Oh yeah and I am sure Franklin could come out of a marking contest looking like the black night and not get a free kick. He gets pinged for every single free he gives away, yet has 10 times worse done to him and he won't get a free.

1. You spelled Wenger wrong - you Fulham cretin.

2. Arsene Wenger has bad eyesight and wears glasses. He genuinely doesn't see any foul committed by an Arsenal player.

So there!

Does anyone know why we give you oxygen on this board?

Seriously - you are a tosser son - you have not a ****teenth of an idea about footy and are only here to steal the valid thoughts of true footy aficionados so you can claim them as your own amongst a myriad of bullshit statistics on the Bay.

Either start actually watching footy and get an original idea of your own (apart from just pulling the random name of a Box Hill player and pushing them) or **** off back to the Bay where you will be treated like the bum fodder that you truly are.
Vintage Taita.

In the autopsy threads, the 3 things I look forward to reading is:
  1. Angry/Agressive Taita putting a ******* in their place,
  2. Phil McCreviss's tid bits of inside knowledge
  3. Opposition supporters pissy at losing to Hawthorn because Hawthorn used to be bottom dwellers in the league when they first joined.

I listened to the pre-match on ABC radio for the Freo v North game which came out of Perth including talkback. I learnt the following:

1. Regular talkback caller didn't know Clarko's name.
2. Embley did nothing wrong as Stratton had hold of his leg. Stratts will get weeks.
3. Buddy will be cited by MRP for several illegal acts.
4. Luke Hodge is a protected species.

I am enlightened ;)

Agree on Hale. But watch second half again to see smart play from Bailey. He consistently positions himself between Nic and the ball, taking advantage of the fact that Nic needs a run up for that leap, and Nic no longer has control of the tap, turning it into a 50-50 ball. We lost the clearances because our small mids were beaten.

I notice that on a number of occasions Bailey blocked Naitanui's jump at the ball and a third up Hawthorn player won the tap. This was penalised once but happen about 10 times, but it's a free all day long.

I chuckled when twice Franklin was penalised for holding in a marking contest and the replays showed that Franklin had a fierce grip on McKenzie's jumper both times and the crowd were still hooting despite seeing the replays.

West Coast should have won but had about 6 players who were next to useless whereas Hawthorn were much more even. Our ground level defending consistently gifts the opposition easy goals and Friday night was no different. Once Hurn went off we had nobody who could deliver the ball out of the backline. By contrast when Birchall went off you guys still had Guerra, Burgoyne, Lake, Mitchell, etc who are good kicks out the backline.

Yeah, not really bro.

Of course both are going to get held a bit in the contest but McKenzie was clearly holding Buddy's arm, preventing him from having any way to mark the ball.

West Coast was the bestest team.
You are the greatest!

You let us win, so thanks for that.

Agree on 2 occasions but FIERCE is a little strong. What about when McKenzie bear hugged Buddy - that was a bit toooooo much to take

BUT didn't win.

Sorry we such talented players in our backline;)

Spare a thought for those of us who have to live amongst these morons. :(

I noticed a number of Times naitanui taking his opponent high
This Was never penalised

I noticed Franklin get taken out numerous times, and he only got a couple

West Coast should have won? Not sure what game you were watching, the eagles barely hit a target all game

If Hodgey is a protected species, then why did the MRP charge him.?Just shows you how thick the eagle supporters are. I thought they knew he was charged by the MRP. They have a short memory over there, didn't Glass get off his charge?Gee, he must be a protected species too..

Buddy v McKenzie:

the ball comes into the Hawks forward line, Buddy is scragged under the ball:

Bud: "hmm, got scragged, no free kick, thats ok, wonder what the weather is like in West Sydley"
McK: "Wow its true!!, we can infringe on Bud, grab him, pull him, bump him, hold his arm, clip his hands, and get away with it!!! Excellent !!"

Just watching that game again, no free for Hodgey when Natanui grabbed him round the neck and dragged him to the ground, no free for Hodgey. How many frees did WE not get from the morons umpiring. They just don't seem to see the frees we should get, what about Mitch, umpiring is a disgrace at times.

But in cases like this, pure dog acts, where a defenseless player is assaulted, they should get smashed by the panel.
I am sure Embley will get rubbed out, hopefully for the three separate acts. But Stratton might just be OK, injury-wise.

I am more concerned about snipers like Goodes who are permitted to get away with dangerous and injury-causing acts. For example, the slide on Sewell and the kicking of Gibson's ankle.

Injuries…

Nothing was said anything about Gibson, but his ankle was swollen, not good.
Could be a few out next week.

Gibbo missing weeks, Goodes let off by tribunal for deliberate snipe. Goodes getting his knee-karma, hopefully.

Like Goodes, it seems Naitanui is officially a member of the protected species club, of which Buddy has no chance of ever being a member. He has an incredible leap, especially onto another player's shoulders in a ruck contest, or into his back, or into his path illegally so Cox can do his tap work. That is, unless Cox is too busy staging for frees and getting them every time.

It is hilarious that hard, at-the-ball players like Hodge will never win a Brownlow. (And opposition supporters complain that he is too physical, putting players in the Waaaaaah-mbulance.) Or that a player like Roughy can dominate contests 6 weeks straight, dragging a team to win contests in which they are being outplayed at times, and yet his chance of winning a Brownlow is zero.

Amazing too, that Buddy has resigned himself to being monstered at will by average defenders, without repercussions. When Buddy was paid for holding Hackenzie's jumper for a microsecond, you can see his bewilderment at the imbalance.

And he still gets tagged as petulant. His self restraint is nothing short of amazing IMO.

My impression on the night, and I think the TV commentators made mention of it too, is that Nat gets away with some extraordinarily physical acts that could be frees.

Watching the game again and I think we played that game with a blunt approach. So many long kicks to packs - it was a very un-hawthorn way to play. We were handballing our way out of defence but then bombing between the arcs. When we hit forward 50 we would pin point and set players up.

Our style since the first 7 rounds has been starkly different.

Early on we would have the midfield 'build the wall' 'play the press' or whatever other phrase you want to use. We would have a lot of inside 50s, very little room for the forwards to mark, fairly poor goal:point ratios but a good spread of goal kickers and of course we won all games bar one. When pressing up, especially if we socre a couple of behinds in a row, the pressure builds, even the defenders push up and then the opposition, if they do get out of 50, do it cleanly on the fast break.

Against Carlton and West Coast we really didn't do this - we kept the defenders back and the midfielders in the midfield. We lost the midfield battle (didn't seem to have back flankers charging forward at centre bounces, and we allowed the opposition to do this relatively unchallenged).

Strange set of tactics - but all in all we're holding our positions, and it's costing us a bit with clearances (don't have the release player at the back of the stoppage). Maybe we've been taking a closer look at how players perform in one-on-one roles across the past month?

Agreed.

This shouldn't have read as accusatory. Buddy has stopped remonstrating (which is a technique that works beautifully for Geelong and Adam Kick-a-man Soy Sauce Goodes) and is getting on with playing footy. His second efforts and defensive pressure were good.
