Autopsy Round 14, 2023: Richmond v St.Kilda

Wow, Sincs had an equal game-high 7 clearances, including 3 centre clearances, despite not attending a single centre bounce! I wonder if either or both of those are a record?

Who knows! Not sure why he didn't go into the middle, I guess they were more worried about the backline.

Windy went to 22 centre bounces, most of all the mids. Good to see him getting a bit of a run in there after 9 centre bounces last week as well. 0 centre bounce clearances unfortunately, though I guess he was probably doing a job.

Centre bounce clearance stats for the year

22.6% - Owens (7 centre bounce clearances from 31 attendances)
18.6% - Sinclair (18 from 97)
14.5% - Clark (12 from 83)
13.1% - Crouch (31 from 237)
12.5% - Phillipou (2 from 16)
11.8% - Steele (21 from 178)
11.3% - Ross (22 from 195)
9.6% - Gresham (11 from 114)
5.4% - Marshall (15 from 278)
4.8% - Bytel (1 from 21)
2.2% - Windhager (1 from 46)

Coaching very poor - I have no idea why you would give the opposition the ball in their back half (by playing someone behind the ball) when you know they will beat you on the run and spread out of defence.

Didn't they realise the game wasn't under the roof at Docklands and they needed to change the way we played. Bizarre.

Got crunched in the midfield but seriously its about time someone started to look at our ruck set ups not just our "mids". Everyone in the world knew it was gonna be a wet slippery night and would turn into a slog fest. If I've ever seen a game where Campbell should have played - last night was it.

Doogs was poor but so were many many others. Steele struggling, Crouch was fantastic, King should stop trying prove he's some sort of tough man and concentrate on winning the ball first.

The young get a bit more leeway but could someone please tell NWM it would be actually nice if he hit a target when he's kicking less than 20 metres.

Same for Phillipou - exciting young talent but ffs there's a time when you go 7th up in a pack and try and take a speccie and there's also a time when you punch the ball to boundary or stay down so your man isn't loose when it slips through your hands.

Maybe next week will be better!!!

Kudos to McQualter he has turned Richmond around in 3 weeks and actually got the better of RTB in the box tonight.

Some positives were the games of NWM, Ross, Crouch, Hill, Butler and Wilkie. The other positive on our current trajectory of W, L, W, L, W, L we will win next week!

Absolute shockers had by Howlers Howard, Never won a Battle, Alloy or Steele, Gresham the Hamster, Pecker Woods, O-wen-its wet I go missing, and Ross the loss to Mini the Boss!:p:p:p

But seriously until we find some genuine midfield talent we are going nowhere. I would rather not play finals and get some decent draft picks and attack another draft. I think we have got ahead of ourselves as far as the list is concerned, there is nothing in the VFL and we still have a 1/3 of the side who are injury prone hacks. This side doesn't deserve to be playing finals with their lack of talent and consistency.

Are you serious playing finals is what it’s about play them & you attract better players, we are not as bad as your saying get a grip.

Poor defensive game again from the forwards and mids, putting undue pressure on the backline- lack of hard chasing and manning up. Poor disposal and decision making by the backline- NWM kicking to the opposition in crucial times, and Dougal just messing up. Too many Tigers with too little pressure when carrying the ball. I think we effectively gave Richmond 4 easy goals on the night. Our forward craft is terrible and we can't kick enough goals, especially from stoppages.
Crouch, Butler and Poo did as much as they could. Might be time to throw Heath in the mix, and bring in Bytel and Paton. Sharman needs a few consecutive games.

You are kidding aren't you? Going into the byes, he had received the most coaches votes out of rucks in the comp. He'd be getting a game.

If we had a genuinue tap ruckman?

He wouldnt be first ruck so im asking again where would he play?
Chf?

Calm ya knickers

Howard byrnes sreele crouch ross battle etc. C grade plodders who will never get better
Thinking footballers always a rarity at our club...

Drop Ross, Gresh, Howard

Bring in Sharman, Paton, Cordy

Paton takes Sinclair's spot so he can play mid.

Coops takes Owens' spot so he can play mid.

Cordy for howard.

If Steele hasn't got it together by the time Clark is back he's at risk of going out too.

Or we can just keep doing the same sh*t every week and get shown up in the midfield.

I havent said he isnt best 22

He'd be our ruckman because despite what this forum wants to believe, hitout numbers aren't that important or the biggest metric for rating a rucks impact on the game.

I like it same senior core letting us down
Let’s find out what others can do
RTB. Saying Steele isn’t injured

Fair enough - but neither are possessions if all you do is grab the ball out of the ruck and blindly scrub it forward.

He's OUR best all round option as a ruckman but he was comprehensively beaten by Nankervis last night. Hit outs to advantage NEED to be a key metric for us to break even in the midfield and unfortunately its an area where he is very poor so that puts us behind the 8 ball a bit.

He's not as good a forward as I hoped he'd become, so to answer Poppedcorn's question, its ruck or as a slight upgrade on someone like Caminiti as a second tall forward/ruck.

So if we had a genuinue tap ruckman that fed the mids it wouldnt matter as he wouldnt get a game
Gotcha

Lol
Yes, coaches around the competition would take an elite around the ground ruckman over a guy who taps it well.

There is a reason why coaches leave games giving votes to Marshall and English as opposed to the hitout heavy rucks.

Sat through the rain for this one, left very disappointed. Some quick ones then a long one. Excuse my negativity - I’m flat after this one.

-Howard is a liability. So important structurally but deserves a run in the 2s. He’s a statement omission surely. Not good enough.

-Time to stop playing Steele. Not fair on him or us at the moment. Extended rest and/or surgery, whatever he needs. He seems physically and mentally shot.

-Disappointed we didn’t try something with Owens. Couldn’t get into the game. Not bad for his development to make him persist and work through it, but would LOVE to see a small stint in the midfield.

-Sinclair seemed our only clean player. His hands in the wet were superb. Disappointed he didn’t get a run through midfield with the game on the line.

-Tigers had numbers everywhere. Killed us on the spread. Are we a running side or is that a myth? We are cats to milk, but don’t get the milk! Our midfield is getting horribly outplayed every week.

-Butler superb.

-Nas not perfect but he’s been consistently good. Going to be a star. We have a great core of 4-5 young players who could be our next wave of contenders if we get it right and build around them.

-Jade Gresham
I’ve been an advocate for a long time. Have seen something special in him. Strong through the legs, a nice step. I always thought he’d get it together.

I spent a good 10m watching him closely on and off the ball last night given he’s out of contract. IT WAS UGLY.

Nobody loves the introduction of zone defence more than Jade Gresham. He’s unaccountable and he pretends.

When we don’t have possession he consistently fails to track his man and work hard into defence. He consistently lets his opponents get space goal side in the hope of a cheapie. He was directly responsible for Short’s second goal - ignore the tv coverage which made it look like NWM’s fault. Gresham was shoulder to shoulder with him and let him run, realized he’d screwed up then called NWM away from his man to cover but way too late.

He is a lazy, pathetic, selfish footballer and he needs to go. He has the nerve to shake his head at the defenders after one play where he watched his own man waltz past him, forcing the defenders to leave their players to cover.

He is an absolute liability who cares about one person - himself.

Nah, aside from perhaps one year, Ro has always been a very ordinary kick for goal. Especially considering he’s such a good field kick.
Well that’s obviously the year I’m remembering 😉

Gresham is shit mate been saying it for years.

Yeah agreed, I find him pretty annoying the same way I did Selwood, for similar reasons. They're great captains, great leaders, whatever, but the way they conduct themselves on the field doesn't make them likable at all.
Obviously everyone is entitled to an opinion but I’d have given most of my appendages to have either (or both) in saints colors on the field.

Ruthless and aggressive contest beasts. Selwood and Cotch have 4 flags as captains which is 3 more than every saints captain combined. Never understood the hate for either, both first ballot hall of famers and genuine legends.

That’s my point

Our senior core are mentally weak imo

I reckon we look like Richmond before they came good. We need to chase our version of Dion Prestia, an elite mid who adds to the depth and quality and add a couple of ready made depth mids for when get hit by injury. That midfield is having to counteract rather than play on their own merit. Having a beaten up Steele going at 50% we look very exposed. Gags should have been building a midfield.

Bit sad really - Owens has a down night and the rest of the team can’t do it.
( Not blaming him - can’t be brilliant every week.)

After King‘s great start I felt he let Vlaustuin (?) get to him mentally although the ump really should have stopped that pushing and shoving.
Don‘t like Richmond, some dirty players, but still a champion outfit despite where they sat on the ladder.
Wasn't confident even after our good start - especially with the predicted weather.
We have a lot of work to do on this team, but for the moment, as some have suggested, there’s a few need to be dropped.
We laugh at Cordy, but I’m willing to see him after being frustrated for too long by Howard.

Not sure I buy this “Richmond are a better team than ladder position suggests so we shouldn’t be too bothered by the result” talk on here.

Since 2012, that’s exactly the sort of attitude our club has had.

You simply need to find a way to win games against teams below you on the ladder if you are a team to be taken seriously.

Richmond are where they are on the ladder because they have been horribly inconsistent this year. Hawthorn because they are a young team rebuilding.

To quote Logan Roy in Succession, when talking to his incompetent and entitled (for different reasons) children with regards to whether they should/could take over the family company “you’re not serious people”.

Until St Kilda as a football club doesn’t make excuses when losing games we simply have to win to play finals, we aren’t a serious football club.

And we haven’t been since 2013.
When has the club made any excuses for losing these games
