Think we have to remember that the Big Footy award is rating players against each other - Its not for five good players.

LN must be taking the piss with Fletcher and Hardingham.

Good post. It's something that Watson is often penalized for in our MVP. There are games where he is quite obviously in our best 2 or 3 players yet people leave him out altogether because "he was below his best".

FWIW I would have had him in the best 5 purely because of his endeavor. It's one of those games where you give votes to the ones that had a decent crack at it.

Melksham, Hille, Howlett, Dempsey, Heppell, Hocking, Lonergan. Them and Watson are the only ones that had a decent crack. Maybe Carlisle too but his game is being overrated.

An example of not having a decent crack, look no further than NLM. Normally, the one thing he has going for him is his hardness. He was soft last night. I noticed 3 occasions where he went into a contest with one arm instead of putting his body over the ball.
I thought you could add Reimers in there as well. He wasn't playing the best of games but he was showing a lot of endeavour.

For my votes

5. Hille
4. Dempsey
3. Hocking
2. Lonergan (disposal for ordinary though)
1. Howlett

I can find less blame in the backline, strangely enough, for coughing up that score than the rest of the field. With the duress they were under we're probably fortunate it wasn't 10 goals more.

StKilda won the inside 50's 56 to 55.

Think it was a poor day for the defenders except for one or two.

Will give coaches votes - For me their is one surprise.

Coaches Votes

10 Riewoldt
8 Hurley
5 Del Santo
4 Montagna
2 Hayes
1 Simpkin

Hayes was the surprising one - Thought Hocking went head-to head with Hayes - And I had Hocking ahead.

Hayes being in the votes is far less surprising than Hurley 8 votes... He was barely on the field and kicked just the 1 goal..

Sorry

Had Hurley on my mind.

StKilda won the inside 50's 56 to 55.

That tells only a portion of the story. Our inside 50s were laboured, clumsy, and sometimes even insane.

The defensive 50 was peppered with that dangerous high ball, often coming straight from an opening bounce. Much harder to defend. The breakdown was in the middle and up forward first, I would say.

But when you concede 21 goals from 56 Inside 50's the defence has suffered a poor day - We could also argue that our forwards had a poor day seeing we kicked 8 goals from 55 inside 50's.

5 Hille
4 Melksham
Both genuinely good I thought. And that was about it...
Now we are reaching:
3 Stanton battled through.
2 Howlett wasn't all bad
1 Hocking wasn't terrible.

Thought we really, really struggled with Watson well held, Ryder very poor, no Zaha and Hurley missing most of the 2nd half. A few inspired moments could've sparked others. Wasn't forthcoming.

5 or 6 guys would be very disappointed at their efforts & hardness at the ball.
