Last 5 games

Marshall 27 marks 9 goals 31 score involvements
Finlayson 21 marks 9 goals 34 score involvements
Dixon 20 marks 8 goals 25 score involvements

Maybe it's something to do with how we're playing generally.

It probably does, since Finlayson and Dixon have stints in ruck.

Poor kicking at goals cost us 3-4 goals plus poor inside 50 entries

Bad defensive errors 4 goals gifted. Farrell/ jones are very inexperienced so hopefully learn

Lycett smashed in ruck & lost inside midfield/ clearances. Our mids looked so dangerous on the outside, imagine how they would benefit from a good tap ruckman

Our old guys trying to carry injuries. You can’t play injured blokes at this level.

Sad fact is, and stating the obvious, this level is a 'come as you are' scenario at this time of year. And most players are now carrying some sort of injury - some of them serious.

We have no choice but to play injured players if they are a better option than what we have in reserve on our list. And managing them to play in the games we think they are most needed with possibly 9 games yet to to play is a part of the management process.

A classic case of dealing with relativities rather than absolutes in an imperfect environment and limited options. Something that I reckon gets missed from the sideline commentators.

Was up against the competitions current best defender pretty much all game and turned as many of our sky high dump kicks into 50/50s as could be expected.

Wasn’t a great game but did as well as plenty of kfs have done against Moore with better service than what Todd got last night.
Nathan Murphy? lol

Even Todd won't be happy with his game on Saturday night. He wasn't alone. Jeremy has been conspicuously absent for the last two games. Charlie probably got the most out of himself and is obviously playing hindered.

I didn't like the way we went inside 50 and it may have been a deliberate strategy given the weather conditions or whatever but it doesn't suit us. Our key forwards have thrived on good delivery, leads being honored etc etc this year so its probably no surprise that they collectively struggled against Collingwood.

Kicking at goal continues to lose us games and generally lower our percentage. Since 2017:
  • 2017 16th
  • 2019 16th
  • 2020 16th
  • 2021 7th
  • 2022 13th
  • 2023 13th so far...
There's your outlier stat where we continue to drastically underperform now somebody ****ING DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT!!! If the game against Collingwood doesn't drive it home what will?

I think there's been way too much analysis of individual players and positions. Fact is we were good enough to be three goals in front in the last quarter, good enough to generate several more scoring shots, etc. The difference in the game was composure and finishing when the heat was on. One team stepped up, the other team stepped down. Collingwood's leadership, their belief and their fight as a team in the key moments is A grade. We leave plenty to be desired in these departments.

We lost by 2 points. If what you've said about Collingwood is correct eg their leadership belief and fight is A grade that makes us a bee's d*ck behind them. Two points. I watched the game again today - bottom line is we kicked 12.11, while Elliot kicked goals out of his whazoo. That has to be the best game of the year, can't wait to play them again.

If Collingwood are A grade on those departments i reckon this year weve been A-

Most of our close wins this year have been on the road and against mid table teams. These games involve less pressure and allow our superior talent to overwhelm.

Historically, it's been games like last night that have tripped us up. Home game, at night, slippery deck, quality opponent. We need to win games like this in the finals and it presents as a major challenge. The Melbourne game earlier in the year was one like this that we won but it took Butters turning in one of the greatest individual performances ever from a Port player to get us over the line.

We need more from our leaders in games like this, we can't just rely on Rozee and Butters to get it done.

Farrell had an absolute nightmare in the last.

Jones also made some terrible mistakes.

Butters, Rozee, Drew all once again good

Need more players to lift. Half the team look unfit or injured.

This bombing/hospital balls inside our 50 felt so much like 2020. Lower the eyes and hit a target you idiots
Lowering the eyes would have been useless since no one was presenting to the kicker. I can understand kicking it to the pack all night, but not when the forward line is relatively open.

Marshall and Finlay can lead well, but didn't! Maybe Ken had too much say on forward entries.

Really disappointed by: -
  • Marshall and Finlay weak efforts. I praise them often, but this time they seemed affected by the pressure and responsibility.
  • Bad kicking cost us the game.
  • Dropped marks.
  • Panicking.

Overall, they should all be proud of their efforts, but disappointed with their lack of poise.

I am very much hoping that everyone learns from this experience.

They should have won.

My overall take is that we have improved a lot this year.

Bergman, Jones, Butters etc have taken huge strides.

It is clear though we need to find another 10% improvement to be a serious flag threat.

I can't see it at the moment, but stranger things have happened.
Agree. Maybe 10% comes from improved kicking from Bergman, marking from Jones (think his jump is amazing and if he could mark rather than spoil he'd be an AA) and instead of 12.11 even 15. 7 would been better. The trouble is Collingwood have more depth, Ash Johnson has kicked 6 goals in the past 2 games and he didn't even make it as the sub this week.

For the first five minutes of Q4 we may as well have been West Coast or Norf for all the resistance we were putting up, and that lost us the game.

Yep. And when you think about the two snaps on goal that Evans had and the running shot that Duursma had in the third that all failed to score, it emphasises how close it really was.

I’ve just gotten to watch the full match now. Farrell was very good in the first three quarters. Just before 3QT he seemed to tweak a lower leg. Was probably cramp but he didn’t look as assured in the last term.

Rioli and SPP really were excellent along with Rozee, Butters, Houston and Drew up to 3QT. Finlayson lifted in the third, but we needed more from him and Marshall earlier, at the very least to keep Murphy away from being able to meet the ball time and time again before either of our guys.

Evans had a busy third term but butchered/rushed some half chances. I think DBJ would have handled the same opportunities marginally better.

McEntee did play a good pressure game.

Wines, Boak and Duursma weren’t terrible in the contests they were involved in - with a couple of exceptions relating to missed tackles. The issue for all three is that they didn’t get to enough contests or spread well enough to get loose balls.

McKenzie is such an important player. Thought he did as well as could be expected on Elliott, although Jones may have been the better four quarter match-up. Jones does so much good but needs to tidy up the brain fades, especially the flying attempts to spoil that he allows to get over the back.

Lycett just plays from behind far too much all over the ground. He has to get in front of his opponent especially at throw ins.

Its interesting when we win, we associate it with Carr say he's the "one in charge" and disregard Hinkley but when we lose we blame it on Hinkley.
I just don't see the logic in this...
Disappointing loss... but you cant blame the coach for players fumbling, not able to handle pressure in our defense and missing set shots
Agree except the last paragraph. Player development is the respinsibility of the coach.

An absolute stinker of a game from Wines. Literally offering us nothing. I called for his head 2 weeks ago and was laughed at but if that game doesnt warrant at least the threat of being dropped than idno what does. Did anyone actually notice him out there tonight?
He was invisible except for moments where he appeared to be stuck in the ground.
