Im frightened what Adelaides forward line could do to us, they could put a dagger into a career or 2.

If they get hold of the midfield our backline won't stand a chance.
To slow, no rebound & not tall enough.
I would prefer the challenge playing youth than have the stalwarts get towelled up.

I'm going with Doc for Hoge
Cyril won't come up... Stewart in

That is all.

Our list must have the most tweeners in the league, guys that are just shy of key position height and weight.

TOB
Stratton
Gibson
Burton
Sicily
Birchall
Heatherley
Frawley

Is it a thing with us? All these guys are forced to play on tall forwards at some stage and are routinely monstered.

The buck stops with Clarkson , it's only round 2 people let's see how we are travelling by round 8. He needs to get the spirit of the club up again. Maybe moving on Sam and Lewis has flattened the playing group. Playing gunstan and Sicily out of position seems wrong to most of us, playing an ultra deep press and then having virtually no one in the forward line seems wrong especially when we have good forwards. God help us if we get a bad run with injuries.

No change?

:p

It wouldn't surprise me. I mean obviously Hodge comes in, with Henderson looking likely to go out (unluckily - I thought he was great).

But Clarkson has a plan for the squad he selected and I doubt he'd ditch it on the back of a 25 point loss in Rd 1. There's no hiding from the fact that our defenders (esp Duryea) looked ordinary on Saturday, but we know it's not an ability problem, it's not an age problem.

I'd love to see changes because I want Burton, Lovell and especially Stewart to play, but I wouldn't be surprised to see only one change this week.

I think with Duryea it may be an ability problem, he was pretty dogshite for the majority of last season also.

I'll go nuts if Henderson is dropped

Decent talls are very hard to come by

Did anyone watch the development of Patton last year with a touch of jealousy?

I did

:(

For the first time in a while, from what I have seen I don't feel like our midfield is a problem if all fit as they are now. We don't bat deep but our cores 5-6 are very good - Tom/Shiels/JOM/Langers/Izzy/Henderson/Hartung and bit parts played by Ruff and Cyril gives us a nice blend. What really kills us is our easily we were exposed through the middle of the ground on the G, we literally could not stop Essendons ball movement, thus allowing inside 50s to our defenders who where on islands isolated. That is all well and good when we had Lake to kill contests, but at the moment we are forcing Chip to play the Lake role and lets face it, Chip aint qualified to tie Brians laces up, and we have Gibbo taking the 2nd tall which is plain and simply asking for us to be murdered.

Whatever our defensive press was on Saturday night will not work against the Crows - 1. They have more dynamic and athletic mids who are brilliantly gifted forward running footballers and 2. Their key forward set up is probably the best in the league, if not best then top 3.

We are going to get absolutely pumbled Saturday if adjustments are not made, as crazy as it sounds I would not be against Ruffy going back ala 2005/2006 and play a role on one the crows big forwards, we literally and realistically have 2 parts of Feck all who can do the job.

It's something we've done for years and never udnerstood it.

Perhaps it's a function of all the good 194cm - 197cm KPPs are gone by the time our picks come around...

Our cores 5 - 6 are very god and you list Tom/Shiels/JOM/Langers/Izzy/Henderson/Hartung.

I'd suggest that's part of our problem, Langers, Henderson and Hartung should be and are fringe, not core.

Quite a few decent talls have been taken later on, most recent guys like Marcus Adams, Joel Hamling, Jake Kolodjashnij, Todd Barass, Oscar Mcdonad are all guys taken later in the draft where we could have added real key position defender depth.

Henderson has always been a good footballer. But agreed, we probably need langers and billy to be depth. Although Langers was brilliant mostly on Saturday night. I think the footy club would be really disappointed in the development of JOR,Lovell,Howe etc. I know Lovell is young but the players who where drafted around him, a lot are playing senior footy. He should be an automatic selection given his position, body type and skill set.

The travelling Crows fans will probably make more noise.

This may sound cocky but I miss that feeling at the footy.. I think I have been too spoilt with all the success in recent years and just expecting the victory, and if we aren't winning it's not gut wrenching...Kinda like the buffet table closing after you've already stuffed your face in...

I'm going to guess that alot of Hawks fans feel the same, hence the 'lack of' crowd involvement?

In- Hodge, Whitecross
Out- Duryea, Henderson

Duryea has been crap since 2015. needs to go.
Henderson was okay, but didnt offer too much. I think Whitecross can play the same position better, plus gives us more options and is quicker.

WhiteX Frawley Stratton
Birchall Gibson Burgoyne
Smith Hodge Shiels
Breust Roughead Schoey
Rioli Gunston Puopolo

McEvoy JOM Mitchell

Sicily, Vickery, Langford, Hartung

I thought a MASSIVE issue we had on Friday night was how many times we allowed Essendon to mark the ball in our F50.
too many times our players were out of position and unable to create a contest. our strength is our ground ball players in the fwd line, and we didnt give them a chance.
We also gave up the corridor option way too easily, but this is more of a structural issue that went wrong id say. Expect that they would be working on defending the corridor a fair bit this week.
Would love to see Roughead, Gunston and Rioli as our deepest 3 players for the majority of the match.
Their forward line is very good, but dont forget about ours. We need to use it.
Stratton will go to Betts, has a very good record on him.
Schoenmakers- on notice. Wouldnt be surprised if Burton comes in for him this week. Burton can play fwd and back also

Round 1 was disappointing, but it will take some time with the changes we have made.
JOM was very good, but also a lot of room for improvement. His lack of connection with teammates was obvious to see and this will improve every game.
Langford had a good game, but needs to dish off more. His kicking is deplorable and cost us goals at both ends at least 3-4 times.
I was actually okay with Vickery's first game. Missed two goals that he should kick, but he will be glad to get the first game out of the way.

When you think about the first half last week, fair to say that none of the following players had any impact on the game:
Gunston
Roughead
Rioli
JOM
Frawley
Gibbo
Birchall
Burgoyne
Smith
Bruest

And we were ahead.
Of the players mentioned, you would say only Roughead, Burgoyne and JOM lifted to an acceptable level in the 2nd half.
I wouldnt expect this many of our top line players to be missing for a half again this week.

Read the first few pages of the thread, and I'm coming to the conclusion that posters here don't actually take notice of what Clarkson and Hawthorn do at the selection table.

He DOES NOT make wholesale changes after a loss.

He backs in his warriors, time and time again.

If you're looking for or expecting 3+ changes you've not been paying attention.

There'll be one, maybe two changes, on all available evidence of previous years.

I'm pretty sure half our side was made up of half back flankers between 09 and 11.

If minimal changes: Hodge for Doc.

If Cyril isn't fit, then Stewart gets a run.

Gunston, one of our most prolific goal kickers, and Sicily, who has the ability to turn a game must stay forward. If one or two Adelaide forwards need checking, then a spell down back of in the mid may be necessary.

I hate to say this, but I would drop Birch for Burton or Howe, and Gibson for Brand or Fitz. (I am praying young Glass and Nash will show great progress this year, and put their names up for these two positions.

Are we ready for some shock changes?

Schoey actually plays well on larger s=slower men like Jenkins. i.e. Tippett. I'm not suggesting permanently moving Schoey back permanently, just for this game.
Hi all and all the best this week, should be a close game.

Just in regard to this Jenkins is actually extremely quick (close to the quickest at the club), which is why he finds so much space and is his key strength.

Bulldogs have a very similar set up

Bulldogs have a very similar set up

Fletcher Roberts - 196 - 90kg
Zane Cordy - 193 - 86kg
Dale Morris - 190 - 91kg

James Frawley - 193 - 94kg
Josh Gibson - 189 - 93kg
Ben Stratton - 189 - 88kg

They're a bit bigger from the weekend but yeah, I suppose you could say a similar set up. They do have a few that can come in that are big solid frames, Adams and Collins.
