Thankyou. lets hope its true, but perhaps not the most paid player at the club because there's the likes of Connor Rozzee etc which we simply cannot afford to lose if w are to tilt for the flag or consecutive flags over the ensuing few years.
I get what you are saying, but no need to worry ... Conner is already under contract, and we will find the money for his next ... ITM, we have plenty of room in our cap to land a big fish.

Yep. The key to the statement is 'one of the highest paid players in the comp for the next two years'. Things like this happen all the time to shake loose players. Jack Martin is one of the highest paid players in the league this year because of the front loaded contract Carlton gave him to walk to the pre-season draft.

It's smart business and the right thing to do from a list management perspective.

Go get him boys.

This is the source of the rumour ....

Port throwing all sorts of crazy money at Merrett to sway him. Will make him the highest paid player on their list by a long way, and one of the highest paid in the comp for the next two years.

In the event that he doesn’t stay loyal to Essendon, that deal will take some beating. It’s strange that these types of conversations are now happening even before the season starts - scary path we are heading down.

If true I'm not sure I'm a fan of this.

Merrett is a good player but we shouldn't be giving him a godfather offer that potentially hurts other players on our list. Several blokes on our list I'd rather be paying more to, either now or soon.

I can't see how Essendon can hurt us with a forward line of Hams/Cox/Langford/Dev. Smith/Wright/Tipungwuti.

Defence is full of med-tall plodders, not rebounders or intercept marking types. And they have an inferior midfield.

Even realistic Essendon supporters think they're a bottom 4 list, and they might be right.

Port by a lazy 40 in front of our home crowd.

Also, they are coached by Ben Rutten

Gee just went and checked out how ticket sales were going. If you choose cheapest option you get this up on the third level. Not many seats left by the looks Screenshot_20210324-114957_Facebook.jpg

Merrett has never really impressed me all that much. Good accumulator but not all that damaging. Doesn't kick many goals. Does he take games by the scruff of the neck? Does he lead from the front? Id take him, don't get me wrong, but I'm not selling the farm (from a salary cap point of view) for him.

Sounds like it'll be a bumper crowd - can't wait!!!!

Wouldn’t we be front-loading precisely to avoid “selling the farm?” We know the players we have locked in. We know when their contracts are ending. We can pay more now and leave space later for when we need to deal with those players.

The only times we've been bothered by Essendon at AO is when Ken has pulled his patented 'Sam Gray, Jake Neade, you're my KPP's tonight. Oh and defense looks a bit tall as well' trick. Port lose by 145 intercept marks. If we stick with our talls from Sunday we should destroy them.

I expect Tipungwuti to get 2 - 4 goals, as we have still yet to have a defender show consistently they can shut down that small, fast annoying opposition forward. Outside that they are shooting blanks up forward.

G'day fellas, can i ask, do you lads think Rocky will be medical sub again or will the injuries assure him of a starting spot. Also any news on SPP? Thanks!
Rocky has played half games in the last couple games we've played, so if he doesn't make the 22 I suspect he'll play in an SANFL trial instead (disclaimer: if we have one this week)

Yeah if there's cap space forthe next couple years, it's the smart play to use that to increase our talent base. I'm not a huge Merrett fan, however with the pending loss of Robbie, Boak and Rocky, I accept that splashing some cash on a player like him to fill the spot of a Rocky for example would make sense.

We return from Melbourne after a 52 point win against North to our home crowd against Essendon under new coach Ben Rutten.

How will Essendon respond after leading by 39 points at half-time and going down by 1 point to Hawthorn? Will Orazio Fantasia back up his 4 goal haul against his old side?

eth-dog, who I know from the Sweet FA board, wrote Essendon’s preview. [Coincidentally, my team also plays his over there this week.] I have just taken a look at their thread.

Their R1 match seems to have really deflated the Bombers’ supporting base. For instance, Dog’s prediction is Port by 12 goals.

It really looks like we have advantage in every line, but we cannot forget that North started well against us. Even if one’s take Essendon to be bad, they wouldn’t be Kanga’s bad.

We may need to be careful. Anxiety could work against us. I wouldn’t take this game for granted.
