The way we play, the wing is a graveyard for anyone.

The vast, vast majority of our transition from defence to forward 50 involves launching long rainbow balls from half back to half forward.
Ie- completely bypassing the wing entirely.
Is why our wingmen should start at the defensive corner of the square at centre bounces, heading toward wherever the ball is & become that outside midfielder.that we are lacking. If it comes out toward their opponent they are still in a prime position to either defend or attack.

FMD, Bytel was given every opportunity last year but just couldn't find the pill enough and couldn't run out games

He was clearly prioritised ahead of Dunstan until we realised we just couldn't carry a an inside mid that only plays one role but doesn't find it near enough.

You cannot possibly complain about Bytel not given opportunity.
That is categorically not true. When he played it was mostly out of position and for some reason he didn't thrive given that.

Paton nearly an outlier of a young player we developed. But that more came from absolute necessity.
Battle showed plenty early and was constantly dropped and trialed in new positions.
Of course Gresh is going to be selected when fit.
Higgins was developed at another AFL side.
Wood has been tried in many roles and never shown enough.
If you think what you have just listed is examples of proper development you have been brainwashed by a club that is a complete failure.
What about constantly holding back Bytel last season? Yes he may not be good enough the jury is still out or has mismanagement stunted or even ruined his development. In hindsight was selecting that butcher Dunstan ahead of him all year because the club felt he gave us a slight edge for a victory in vital games worth it? I think not.

Think you need a cup of tea, a panadol and a lie down my friend.. if you pinned your hopes on us finishing top 4 this year with the 22 named, that is absolutely a you problem and not a st kilda problem.
Was bytel available for selection on Friday? Is dunstan even on our list anymore?

What the hell?

If by out of position do you mean inside mid, because that is where he predmmonitely played.

Only once did he get less than 12 centre bounce attendances and had three games if 19 and one of 23 attendances

He was regularly getting more opportunities in the centre bounce than he was getting possessions

He wasn't playing in a back pocket dude

I think you've missed the conversation. I'll give you the short version. He and some other think our selection and development are fine. I don't.

You're quoting me rabbiting on about players that aren't available or even on our list mate. Whatever conversation you think you're in, its not with me

Prioritised over Dunstan for Round 23 only.

And when he played be was forced to be a defensive mid, so possessions aren't going to flow. He still managed 17d, 7t and 2g in Round 23 after some dominant VFL form. So it's rich to say he's a) been given opportunity and b) hasn't performed because he hasn't reached 100 fantasy points every week.

He was clearly prioritised over Dunstan early in the year

He played 7 of the first 10 games and was injury sub in another 2

Dunstan played one game in that period and then took his spot in round 11

He was given every opportunity but could not perform well enough

So no it wasn't just round 23 at all

He was injury sub 5 times minimum last season. What brilliant "opportunities".

I'd argue that isn't prioritising, it's actually inhibiting.

3 of those times he was injury sub were late in the year where he already was given opportunity and hadn't shown the form to keep his spot

It's as simple as that unfortunately.

Ratten clearly wanted to see him succeed which is why he was given first crack and persisted with for most of the first half of the year.

At the end of the day though, if you aren't showing the results and there is a player smashing the door down selection integrity has to come into it eventually.

I'd loved to have seen Hunter Clark given the same midfield opportunity as Bytel to be honest.

OK going by your theory how does Kent continue to get games after nearly a decade of proving he is at best a VFL footballer?

How did Mav Weller spend years in our seniors as possibly the worst player in the comp?

How did butcher Dunstan receive so many games over the last 3 years?

Didn't you just tell me Bytel was played out of position and then stopped replying when I showed you how many centre bounces he attended?

Dunstan player 13 games over 2 years with Ratten and had to dominate the VFL before he was selected

No idea how Mav Weller is even relevant 😂

Especially with a specialist one position inside mid. He really would have benefitted from a year of VFL to get him up to speed but Covid stuffed it up.

Still worry that fitness and one way running could hold Hunter back but he was proving me wrong before he did his ACL.

I must have missed that. I think Bytel has been more than fine in the games he has been picked in. I'm not sure where you got those stats. Would love to see them.

It's on the AFL app champion

Proves you don't watch the game as closely as you make out though by suggesting he was played out of position.

Bytel will be fine but he needs to play VFL and dominate , he has suffered from lack of game time and injury.
Also I feel the only change in this weeks team will be Kent for Highmore.

And Dunstan had at least a month in the VFL where he was averaging over 30 disposals and 2 goals a game. Was undoubtedly Sandy's best - and at times it felt like only - player.

Bytel got every chance to cement his spot before the coaches relented and brought Dunstan in, whose form warranted being brought in weeks earlier.

Given the injury update I can see us going this way.

B: Paton Howard Wilkie
HB: Hill Battle Webster
C: Wood Crouch Mckenzie
HF: Gresh Membrey Higgins
F: Hayes King Butler
FOL: Marshall Steele Sinclair
Int: Geary, Long, Ross, Nasiah

Emg: Byrnes Lienert Campbell

I think they will drop Owen’s which is shit for a young fella. Why train him as a mid a play him predominantly forward. Saints development 101.

Nasiah is more a hope, they will probably stay with Byrnes.

We must play the least amount of mids in the comp.

Need to persist with Owens. Wouldn’t be the first player to be overawed in their first game. Give him a run of a few games to get upto speed

+1

I think it was Malthouse who would debut kids and give them assurances he would play them for at least 3 games.

This has two tangible benefits that I can notice:

a) gives the kid a bit of job security, knowing that if he is a little overawed or makes some mistakes on debut, he won't be on the chopping block

and

b) gives them two opportunities to work on things that their coach(es) have picked out in the video analysis to implement in the next game.

It isn't very beneficial having kids come in and out of the side. It doesn't give them the opportunity to build any continuity. It's a huge reason why Tom Lynch didn't flourish until he left us, for example.

Played great round 1. Win
Sub round 2. Lose
Dumped round 3. Lose
Played great round 4. Win
Dunstan in round 5. Whole team got smashed. Lose
Sub round 6. Lose
Played well round 7. Win
Quieter game round 8. Win
Ok game round 9. Lose
Poor game round 10 (whole team smashed. Mckernan ruck).
Dumped round 11 for the easy game vs North.
Round 13 sub then dumped
Round 18 sub then dumped
Round 21 sub then dumped
Round 23 dominant. Win

He did pretty damn well for being confusingly in and out and medi sub
