Laid 2 tackles I50, saved a goal by getting a finger on it in defence. He spent a small amount of time on opponents that went forward, and went forward himself to provide some pressure. I'd like him to spend more time in the midfield but the fact that he was able to do other things on the ground is why his output was lowered.
Tackles yes but he looked absolutely lost in there from what is aw.
That goal save came from him playing midfield and being down there for a stoppage.

No he wasn't.

You can see him in the D50 as the ball is kicked in long with 4 minutes left in the 1st. You can also see him being the third deepest in defence providing an outlet kick shortly before that. Had nothing to do with a stoppage.

Being a spare in defence is still being in defence.

Again he didn't play in the defense, midfielders run in there all the time, so do wingers. It's apart of their role and helping out the defense, he never started down there or was down there for long periods.

Truly odd that some people are so determined to prove that we should drop a player who went at 100% DE, laid 7 tackles, 23 pressure acts and had 5 score involvements from his 10 touches. Some people need to accept that their whipping boy/s of choice do improve and are playing their role. See also - Harry Morrison.
Mate, he was not outstanding he was serviceable. From reports at BH, Kosi was good. To my mind you pick your best players and tweak your structures to accommodate them, Ruckmen being the exception. Now you might think that Nash is the superior player or that the inclusion of Kosi over Nash would upset team balance and that’s your perogative. And by the by, I rate Harry😉

I'd go in unchanged if you didn't have Day and Breust waiting in the wings.

However:
IN: Breust, McEvoy, Day
OUT: MacDonald, Lynch, Maginness

I think C-Mac and Finn are super stiff, but are both expendable to the class the guys above bring.

It won't happen, but I wouldn't be playing McEvoy personally if he wasn't the captain. I liked our team balance in the second half with Nashy in the ruck a lot.

I don't see Sam omitting two young players in round 2 after both contributed strongly when we are deep in 'rebuild through kids' mode.

Breust and McEvoy will offer leadership, so Liam Shiels could easily miss a game. Tom Phillips was last in, so don't be surprised if he's first out.

In: McEvoy, Breust, Day
Out: Lynch, Phillips, Shiels, one of Ward, Macdonald or Maginness to the sub role.

Kosi isn’t a midfielder so it’s really a moot point.

I think it is more if we are playing an extra tall or not. If we decide to go taller then maybe Nash becomes less important.

Think one of Shiels, Phillips or Howe should be sub every week. No point having a young player in the sub role

At the end of the first quarter he played as a spare. They obviously don't start as a spare because it's against 6-6-6 rules but he was effectively a defender for short periods.

Interesting fact, Kosi is actually shorter than Nash.

You pick the best players that suit the game style you are after. I think Sam wants run and endurance so will pick a runner over a forward with the rucks resting forward. This was why Nash played forward at times to rest him there to save rotations for the runners.

I'd say Finn was someone who did it in all positions.

FWD, MID (No CBAs but we know it's his no1), Wing and DEF.

Hardwick Frost DGB

Scrim Sicily Jiath

Day Newk Ward

Cmac Gunston Moore

Wing Lewis Bruest

Reeves Omeara Mitchell

Worpel, Mcevoy, Howe, Nash SUB - Morrison

I was just about to type out my selected team.
Then I realised that Wingnut had beat me to it.
This is the team.

Second half of last year he was in our top handful of players. BOG in first game this week at BH, he has to play. He is just better than Morrison, Shiels, Phillips. Its not really close either. He's also only 26. About to hit his prime years.

OUT:
  • Worpel
  • Lynch

IN:
  • Breust
  • Day (if fit)

Hardwick - Frost - DGB
Scrimshaw - Sicily - CJ

Reeves - Mitchell - JOM
Ward - Wingard - Maginess

Moore - Gunston - Newcombe
Breust - Lewis - MacDonald

Nash - Morrison - Day - Phillips
Sub: Shiels

Worpel to the VFL to find some form, learn to do the team things and to give to the first option. He's better served doing that then being moved to the sub. This is unlikely to happen, but he's the obvious choice based on the game vs North.

Port were running Lycett as a sole ruck, being chopped out by Finlayson. I think we can match that with Reeves and Nash again. If Nash is on the ground then we want him around the ball, as he is lost up forward. Conversely Finlayson's a much better forward than a relief ruck, so that matchup is to our advantage.

Newcombe had more of an impact playing forward than in the middle, so I'd like to see us split his time between the forward line and midfield approx 50/50. Maybe split the role with Wingard who is still essentially doing his pre-season.

Day and Morrison to rotate from HBF to a wing. Hopefully Day is fit enough. It may release CJ too.

Ward to rotate from the wing through the middle. Maginess to rotate from the wing and through the middle sparingly. Phillips to rotate from the wing to the HFF.

Ruck: Reeves, Nash + Lewis (up forward)

HFF: Moore, Newcombe, MacDonald, Wingard + Phillips

Wing: Maginess, Ward, Phillips, Morrison + Day

Midfield: Mitchell, JOM, Nash, Wingard, Newcombe, Ward + Maginess, Phillips, MacDonald

HBF: Scrimshaw, Sicily, CJ, Day + Morrison

With Winguard and Gunston hands down our smartest players around goals Kosi is facing uphill battle getting a regular gig in fwd line. We all raised our eyebrows when sis moved from fwd to back. Maybe this might be an option for Kosi. If Day keeps breaking down we might have to consider something like this. Would love to see Day on the ball....just looks so smooth and he looks to love playing on the G finding space. I hope it happens this year.

I am going for

B. Hardwick, DGB, Frost
HB. Scrimma, Sicily, CJ
C. Ward, Mitchell, O'Meara
HF. MacDonald, Moore, Wingard
F. Breust, Lewis, Gunston
Foll. Reeves, Nash, Newcombe
Int. Worpel, McEvoy, Morrison, Day
Sub - Maginness

That was tough.

I’d have Worpel as the sub. Maginness was better against North Melbourne and would benefit playing another game.

The only thing Maguiness offers is run, and Phillips can do that. People are too sentimental about keeping Maguiness in the team, and if anyone else had that performance people would be calling for his head.
I reckon Maguiness offers more. And a harder edge than Phillips. The ability to play inside and outside if needed. I like that flexibility.
