What: Round 2 v Adelaide
When: Saturday 26 March, 1:45pm
Where: The home of footy, the mighty M.C.G.

Last time they met: Collingwood 12.6.78 defeated Adelaide 10.13.73 at Adelaide Oval.

Jamie Elliott was the hero as the Pies claimed a surprise win on the road. A fast start saw Elliott kick 4 goals in the first quarter, but the Pies’ 23 point lead was all but wiped out by halftime. The Crows went on to hit the front twice in the third term and once more in the last before Elliott took back the lead for the last time with his 6th goal. The win enabled Collingwood to announce Nathan Buckley’s resignation/sacking as coach while on a relative high and with dignity intact.

Last week’s form:

Adelaide: Lost to Fremantle by 1 point. Should have been blown away by an understrength Freo by half time but the Docker’s goal kicking kept them in the game. In the second half the Crows got their act together and could have easily won or drawn the game if not for Heath Chapman’s brilliant spoil stopping a last second score. Josh Rachele had a blistering debut kicking 5 goals.

Collingwood: Defeated St Kilda by 17 points. A terrific first up win under Craig McCrae saw Collingwood establish an early lead that grew to 35 points early in the third term before the Saints strung together 5 goals to hit the lead early in the last quarter. Collingwood immediately wrestled back the momentum and finished strongly with DeGoey, Lipinski, Adams, Howe and wunderkind Nick Daicos leading the way.

Team selection

Collingwood lose Mason Cox due to an ankle issue and have omitted Trent Bianco. Nathan Kreuger comes in for his Pies debut and Will Hoskin-Elliott comes in after his covid related absence last week.

Adelaide have dropped Milera, Thilthorpe, Soligo and have lost McPherson to injury. They've brought in Gollant, Pedlar, and Cook. Thilthorpe being dropped is a surprise, even if he was quiet last week. They don't appear to have added any height to stretch our depleted defence.

Preview

We’ve usually enjoyed playing Adelaide. We have a commanding 29-15-1 record against them, literally the best record against them of any team in the comp. Not that it matters this week at the G, but we’re the only team that has a winning record against them in Adelaide. They were a much weaker side last year than the side we beat last week and we are back on our home ground - so why am I worried?

Call it the difficult second album syndrome or the second year blues. We made a modest splash last week with a brand spanking new game plan that didn‘t make you want to claw your own eyes out, a newfound sense of daring and desire, and debuted the brightest new hope since L Skywalker’s name first appeared on the team sheet for the Yavin Rebels. But now we’ve got to back it up again. We’ve got to show that same level of commitment to pressure, chase and tackle again, and we’ve got to show the same willingness to keep attacking even if it doesn’t always come off. There is a part of me that thinks that St Kilda let us have our own way a bit too easily, that their forwards didn’t take full advantage of our weakened defence when they had the upper hand, and that our skill errors could have easily been more costly than they were.

On the other hand, Adelaide have only 4 players in their team with more than 70 games experience. And if having 9 players aged over 28 in one team seems excessive for a rebuilding side, our oldies showed last week that they’ve still got it, with the likes of Pendles, Steele, Howe, Elliott, Adams, Crisp & Mihocek contributing strongly and balanced by the young whippersnappers in Lipinski, Daicos, Quaynor and Daicos.

As usual, the game should be won in the midfield. Neither team look like having a lot of marking power up forward, with Mihocek and Kreuger up one end and Himmelberg and Fogarty at the other. We will have to watch out for their dangerous smalls, who accounted for most of their goals last week, and so Maynard's absence could be costly. But on the plus side, I'm looking forward to our new quick ball movement on the wide open spaces of the MCG, and how dangerous the likes of Elliott could be with some direct service.

Tip: Collingwood by 25. I'm not getting carried away by our win last week, but we should be too good to not account for a fellow 2021 struggler.

Footy at the Oscars

Following the success*(citation needed) of last year’s effort and the overwhelming public demand*(ditto) for an encore, I present the footyfied Best Picture Nominees at the 2022 Oscars!

Don't Look Up - A naive scientist (played by Peter Murphy) discovers evidence of an impending catastrophe that will wipe out everything unless quick, decisive action is taken. However he is left stunned when the President (Eddie Maguire) Chief of Staff (Geoff Walsh) and other top officials (Ned Guy, Mark Korda) ignore his advice and decide to do nothing. Will the mysterious rich man with weird definitely-not-fake hair (Jeff Browne) step in to do the right thing or will he make the situation worse?

King Richard- the powerful true life story of a man who raises two kids to totally dominate a sport. Stars Peter, Josh and Nick Daicos.

Nightmare Alley - a silver tongued charmer convinces those around him, including some rich and powerful people, that he has special mental abilities and powers. But in reality he’s just a confidence trickster who causes devastation to befall all those who trust in him. Stars Adrian Dodoro.

The Power of the Dog - a brusque, unkempt man deals with his emotional frustration, repressions and toxic masculinity by taking his anger out on a weak and awkward private schoolboy. But is the outwardly feeble boy secretly even more evil and dangerous? Stars Luke Beveridge and Tom Morris.

West Side Story - the classic story about two star cross’d lovers who unfortunately belong to warring gangs. Stars me and my goddamn Hawthorn supporting partner.

And finally of course there’s the epic story of:

Yes, it’s Part 1 of the Charlie Dean story. It’s all about a world with an oppressed group of people who are clinging to the hope provided by an ancient prophecy - that one day they will gain possession of a draft pick, and they will actually use that draft pick on a viable key position player.

Recoil in horror when Dean meets Mark Robinson at a press conference:

Thrill to Dean first encountering the Marvel Stadium surface:

Plus there are lots of cool giant worms which also relate to footy somehow*(citation needed).

Post your tips and thoughts for the game in the thread, as well as any suggestions for how to link the (excellent) films Licorice Pizza and Drive My Car to footy, because I'm buggered if I can think of one right now.

Remember too to put your hand up to do a preview of another round because otherwise I'm doing more of this rubbish.

Didn't expect to win last week and would've easily coped with any disappointment that would've come from a loss. Trying to keep perspective and keep my expectations low but I do genuinely see this as a 50/50 game so fingers crossed.

Speaking of lowering expectations...

Kreuger to kick 4, N Daicos 40 touches

Thank you manicmagpie for a lively preview, looking forward to each and every one of your previews throughout the season. Each and every one.

I love seeing a player make their debut for the club after a win. Kill 'em, Freddie.

I hope that the players who played well do it again.

I hope that the average/sub-average become brilliant.

I hope I feel deep regret for not being able to attend this game.

Pies. 19pts.

Great preview manicmagpie but I disagree that our Marking Power up forward is only Brody/Kruger - Jamie Elliot is one of the best contested marks and plays like a true FF instead of a small FF. Also the fact that Ollie Henry doesn't mind a leap and nearly pulled off 2 rippers.

I believe this is a midfield game, too. Can we run Crispy on Keays in a negating role and have Tay smother Sloane and then we have the ability to let JDG and Lipper provide some good run out of the centre square.

PS: I would have cast Robbo as the worm - the 'thumpers' are just the sounds of caps coming off stubbies. The Baron is definitely Michael Voss.

Like last week a Collingwood win will go a long way to easing the pain of Carlton winning.

Collingwood by enough and best of luck Krugs.

Awesome preview 👏

I’m confident the Pies have this.

Crows outs vs ins further weaken their line up imo

Pies defence is undermanned but short of Fogarty and Rochelle… the crows forward line looks very inexperienced and overall ordinary…

The only good thought I have about Adelaide is at least it doesn't have 'Port' in front of it.

I visited Adelaide once, in January 1998, for a Bucks Party (8/10) and wedding (4/10). The Groom was an extroverted futures broker and his bride an auditor. She came from a long line of accountants, many of whom I met, and I think this family epitomised the excitement of Adelaide and why i have never returned.

The marriage was doomed and so is Adelaide against us.

Last week, it was Sidey whose performance brought me the most joy. He ran hard. He looked like he cared about footy. His pants were on.

McCreery is another I love to see run - shuts down space and causes panic. God only knows what his behaviour was like in the womb, probably gnawed on his umbilical cord to liven things up.

And I love seeing Howe jumping again.

We can bet both Apex36 balls and his wedding flute on a big win.

Collingwood by 64 points

Seriously, why is the Ticketek website trying to tell me the AFL Reserve is basically sold out and won't let me get Guests passes?

There is simply no universe where the AFL Reserve is 90% sold out for Collingwood vs Adelaide, two teams, which combined, wouldn't even have 20K AFL Members on Club support.

So unless somehow every AFL member decided they wanted to go to this game (they didn't) Ticketek's system is broken, just like the Ticketmaster one was when the "sold out" St.Kilda game only had 40K people there
