Autopsy Round 20, 2022: Hawthorn leave it late against the Aints

Full credit to Finn, He kept Sinclair under control in the first half then had 15 touches himself in the second half when moved into the middle.

Cmac looks good and Jai bounced back in the second half when he was able to find some space. Ward building nicely.

Contested ball still a huge issue for us. If the opposition brings the heat around the ball we wilt.

We're never going to hear the last of it when Coach Killer comes off suspension.

Jeka’s opponent got hit up four times in the time he was on the ground (including Owens who is a midget)

Not up to defending an AFL forward who is willing to lead.

He may have a neat kick (which is lovely) but if the opposition play through his opponent because he doesn’t know how to stick tight / close space he’s a liability.

Saints are rubbish. We’d have been crushed if they weren’t.

Not sure if we should be disappointed we didn’t torch them or worried that they could have torched us despite being rubbish.

Was pretty gross for the most part

Liked Finns game.

Don’t get me wrong, we were lousy for most of the match, but take away Hardwick’s late outburst and the truly putrid umpiring in the first half and that scoreline suddenly looks very different.

it just shows that even for a roller coaster team in its early stages, things are looking up.

Pretty poor first 3 quarters, but at least they pulled their fingers out in the last quarter, unlike earlier in the year against the Saints when they walked over us for 4 quarters and ended up winning by 70-odd points...

Continuing to see good signs from Ward, MacDonald, Butler, MaGinness etc.

Also:
  • Newc dealing with the tag - obviously struggled at the start, but finishing with 21 touches and 2 goals is a good outcome.
  • Jeka looked okay down back, but want to see how if he gets a few more opportunities.
  • Want to keep Scrimshaw down back - but great result to get 2 goals out of him when swinging him forward.
  • an unfortunately poor day from Lewis, Kosi, and Gunston (acknowledging a couple of injuries in there)

At least we didn't get 69ed for the third straight time. Was on the cards at half time.

Injuries :(

Great that the young'ns drove the late respectableness

Gee where was that intensity in the last quarter the rest of the game . Very frustrating

One of those real 'learning' games I feel .
We also seem to be getting nice flexibility in the line up .

We will be past the Saints in 12 months , a very average vanilla side who are old .

Love Scrimshaw always have!

I was bewildered many times when Clarkson would drop him ahead of others as assumed he was injured after playing a solid game.

Reads the game beautifully, always seems to have time, great hands and kick.

He ignited our forward line when he went there and a brilliant move by Sam. He's very solid down back but up forward he looked very comfortable indeed...

We picked him up for peanuts but he is now looking like the top draft pick the Suns paid for and maturing very nicely at 23.

Thank-you Suns!

Ward, Macdonald and Morrison were the only three who played 4 quarters.

Nash had a great first half and Maginness, Moore and Newcombe had strong second halves. It was good exposure for Newcombe to get attention again. Found a way to fight through it and make an impact. The kid is a gun.

Scrimshaw and Day were good in patches.

McEvoy cannot be the sole ruck anymore. He is far more impactful as a target up forward and chopping out as a second ruck.

I’ll refrain from commenting on anyone else.

Ohh, Jeka and Morris also looked really good with their limited opportunity.

Newcombes fight in the second half was inspirational. Had a dog day but kept at it. Was massive in the last.

Will learn a lot from this game.

Mitchell was woeful today. Can't believe his handball in the last completely killing our momentum or his shitty dinky kicks around the body inside 50 to absolutely noone. Love the effort but like Howe doesn't fit with our gamestyle.

Scrim as a forward is interesting, he is versatile enough. Always felt he should get more of a run in the midfield but could play anywhere.

The backline is one area where we aren't lacking especially with Blanck and now possibly Jeka adding to the options we have down there so why not.
