Autopsy Round 20, 2023 vs Adelaide

The falling away of some of our players in recent weeks has been astounding. Bergmann, Burton, Boak, Marshall, Horne-Francis to name a few have not given a yelp over the past month. Finalyson has also gone missing although he has some off field issues which may be impacting on his performance.

I can only think that we have players carrying unpublicised injury.

Next week we face Geelong in Geelong while Melbourne play North Melbourne. If Melbourne get over Richmond today there is a good chance we will be out of the top 4 as early as next weekend. We have no percentage to keep the other contenders at bay. This season has all the hallmarks of another Hinkley inspired crash and burn.

I keep thinking well surely the big silver lining here is that it means we will have change this year as nobody could be crazy enough to re-sign an 11 year coach on a 3 game losing streak (which will probably be 4 next week). Then I remember some of the other decisions we have made.

Anyway Evans looked good, Duurs started to look better. This year was always gonna be a transitional year it was just all those wins that conned us in to thinking it was something else.

Line up next season with Carr as head coach, a decent box around him, another year in to JHF, Visentini, etc, and adding Ratugolea and McKay, and I'm feeling pretty positive about 2024.

But Ken might still be here.... mind you Kochie has been quiet.

A few weeks ago I heard Nathan Bassett say on radio "it would be pretty hard for us to fall out of the top 4"

I think before the GC or Carlton game.

At that moment it seemed clear the arrogance had fully set in.

And here we are !

Don't worry guys, our captain big Tommy Jonas will come in next week to sure-up our defence and Riley Bonner will be back to provide some much needed grunt around the ball.

What I really can't deal with is how we let the Racist put seven away and win the medal. We know that stopping him is the biggest step to stopping them - other sides have done this successfully. We didn't even bother - so often he was exactly where he needed to be completely unhindered by any hint of defence.

We are so badly coached. If only we had a thread to discuss that...

EDIT : bloody autocorrect...

Just a post saying we got thumped by a team who havent beaten anyone above 17th in the last two months, who were missing a bunch of their good players

Any chance a few journos could ask hinkley a few hard questions.. rucci asks the shittest questions.. need a journo to go hard at the bloke.. wishy washy bullshit questions..
Riccui hasn’t been a journalist for a long time.
He’s nothing more than a mouth piece for the club.
I’m not sure why the other journalist in press conferences continued to let him ask the first question.

I love my sport but I hated last night. Knew what i was going to get from Port in the early minutes of the game and England had 20 on the board in the first two overs. This ended with an 8 goal loss and 9 for 389.

I was getting frustrated and angry flicking between the 2 channels with Wife saying "well don't watch it then...." which makes me angrier.

When I see that rubbish from Port early on next time, I'm gonna turn it off. Not worth the anger and frustration.

Have you ever seen Drew perform so comprehensively badly when given a run-with role before?

Aliir with multiple fumbles in the first ten minutes?

Burton with dropped sitters?

Horne-Francis watch Laird and Crouch waltz the ball away without breaking into a trot to pressure them?

Finlayson and Marshall both play behind their opponents at every single contest?

We were completely psyched out by the occasion.
There’s a fair bit of truth in this.

I also think we didn’t come to play.
The reserves were just as bad.
That is a coaching issue.

Everyone looks comfortable again and I’ve got this terrible feeling that the club has already extended Hinkleys contract which has filtered thru the players.
No more playing on edge.

How have our forward entries gone from elite, with multiple leading options and lowered eyes kicking to advantage of the forwards to continually bombing in with no thought?

You can’t say pressure on the ball forcing it, multiple times we were running under no pressure and just bombed it as far as we could.

It is beyond belief the turnaround..

What 'occasion'? We've played two of these games every year for the last 27 years.

There was no 'occasion' when we played like this against Carlton. We just sucked.
Time for you to step away from footy for a while me thinks, the showdowns are always an 'occasion' with a far bigger build up than any normal home and away games coupled with the massive incentive of being able to just about lock a top two position - there is/was an occasion and we didn't step up to the plate as required.

It's not very often you can say that a team managed to do everything poorly in a game but that was this game.

Attack, defence, stoppage, transition, skill, effort ... The list goes on, all of it was at a very low level.

What struck me as particularly bad was our method around contest. Almost every time the crows got their hands on the ball in stoppage it was a handball to release a player outside. Out the front, clean exit, long kick inside 50. No pressure.

Comparatively, all of our stoppages were toe pokes, hack kicks or players getting caught. It looked like we were playing a wet weather game and them dry weather.

Your doctor should no longer be allowed to be involved in the game. To allow allir to go back on the ground is a disgrace- winning meant more to him than the health and safety of the player. !!!

Adelaide went into the match without Doedee & Murray, & lost Butts to injury early during in the match. They either have incredible depth in the KPD department , or we have a dysfunctional, uncompetitive forward line. I tend to think it’s a bit of both.

The Crows have a solid history of producing AFL quality KPDs, while we are the complete opposite. Sure we get on a roll here and there, but most astute analysts of the game know it’s unsustainable without the key areas of the ground covered. If Aliir & Mackenzie aren’t getting the job done, we literally have no one else.

As for our key forwards, Dixon is banged up & approaching the end, Finlayson is more of a swing man & currently has more pressing issues then football to worry about, Marshall has reverted back to the uncompetitive, play from behind, lazy forward he’s been for most of his career. Lord has a lot of positive traits but can’t kick to save his life, which leaves Georgiades.

I’ll be honest, before he went down with injury I was open to trading him in return for a decent KPD or Ruckman. Now I have a complete opposite view, he must be retained at all costs. Mitch might have his his flaws, but he is our best hope of becoming the match winning KPF we desperately need.
