Autopsy Round 23 Review - Saints second half demolishes the Kitty Cats

Great win. I'd say our best for the year. Even though it may affect our draft hand fk it. Tanking is for losers.

Wilkie best game in his saints career, which says a lot.

Couldn't really fault anyone. Wilson did some really nice things, Stocker having spells in the middle added a hard edge missing from the first half.

There is the talk of us playing better without Max. I'll say one thing, maybe we're playing better with a better midfield mix. Since we've started playing better Seb Ross hasn't been playing, Pou found form, Zac Jones playing to his strengths and not biting off too much, Clark having an uninterrupted run in the 1sts (touch wood), Mason Wood coming back from a terrible injury.

C'mon saints! Finish off strong next week and ruin finals for the blues. Take this form into the new year.

All the bleaters that dominant this forum going on about “the list” and “our shit midfield” constantly, I hope this match makes you revisit your defeatist opinions.

The sport now is about ball-movement, decision-making under pressure, and the ability for a coaching group to create a system that trains their players to execute all of the above.

It’s why you see a team like Hawthorn, with an ordinary list, catapult up the ladder: they are brilliantly coached.

Stop giving our coaches an out constantly by blaming the list.

Nights like tonight show that we can match it with anyone if our ball movement and system are right.

A very exciting win and I hope the whole club can use it to go into next year with the hope of winning the whole thing.

A Premiership has to be the aim every year. Stop being such defeatists about our list.

Tonight was a shining light in a bitterly disappointing year.

But hopefully it’s the start of something big for the whole club and the coaches understand the formula that brings success in the modern game.

Exciting stuff.
Bore off mate.
There was nothing so obvious that at the first sign of getting the game plan going you'd turn up and say "that's all I was asking for" after ten thousand posts claiming this coaching staff were incapable of producing modern football.

Fell in love with Wilson tonight.

We've found one with Garcia.

My favourite player right now is Cooper Sharman. I love how he goes about it. Always in there congratulating his teammates. Gives 100%. Is only going to get better. Big Max could learn a thing or two from him as far as body language goes.

Stocker was important.

Wilkie is an absolute gun.

Great game day coaching from Lyon.
what was it you were saying about going backwards?

I particularly enjoyed the pile on St Kilda in the first half - almost gloating about how we cant play at Marvel, it never really changed other than the commentators becoming flatter and flatter as the game went on.

Two hilarious moments were when Jones intercepted a handball in the last and had already kicked it to our forwards and they were STILL talking about the Geelong player doing an amazing job.

Or when we went 3 goals up and they said, Saints are just staying in touch... genuinely comical stuff tonight.

It was genuinely deplorable tonight, some of the worst commentary I've ever heard and I've listened to 'that orange team' woman.

Great move by Lyon. First half our mids were out of position in almost every centre bounce. Stanley would tap it to space and the Cats mids just ran on to it and attacked through the 6,6,6.
Second half, Stocker shut down the easy exit and stopped the Cats. This is where we started to get our game moving, confidence came back, and we were off to the races.
But Lyon can't coach apparently.

This bloke can coach (ran into a former ITK a few months ago who was very senior - had no time for Lyon - unmanageable- but said there is no doubt he can coach & miles ahead of Ratts- give him some talent & we will be something) - for the last 2 years he is trying to improve the standards inch by inch with what he has got

He was supposed to report to Geoff Walsh - wasn’t interested in what Walsh had to say so Walsh walked.

Wouldn’t answer to Lethlean so Bassat ultimately sided with RTB & Lethlean was moved on.

I am a big RTB supporter but he should be questioned and be accountable not just to the President

Can’t recall us hitting so many targets with ease. We were a joy to watch in that second half,

Really wish Stocker had of kicked that goal, but his game felt like it was more than 15 touches. You can tell he’s starting to believe in himself and can really be an important part of the side moving forward.

Now, an accurate representation of Tim
Membrey over the last eight weeks:

Im Back Wake Up GIF

Credit to him, he’s earning his next contract be it with us or someone else - hopefully us.

Zak Jones is tearing my head and my heart apart.

My head says we need his list spot and my heart is saying he is doing the business and deserves an extension. He was very good even when we were struggling in the first half.

Jack Higgins run and chase was very impressive today. He’s starting to get that real balance that separates the good small forwards.

Owens is a competitive beast. I wouldn’t even play monopoly with him, cause he just hates losing contests.

Can’t believe Battle would give up playing alongside a general like Wilkie. Make it make sense.

Darcy Wilson was superb with his gut running. He’s going to be a phenomenal player for us, and opponents will dread be given the assignment of playing on him.

Didn’t enjoy watching Howard bake him in the last, even though it clearly had the desired effect.

Hugo Garcia is just fun to watch. His inside 50 delivery looks very, very good.

I know they said Hilly was injured, but he was my nominee to make way for Hugo.

I hope LDU and others got to watch that game and second half in particular. There was a lot to admire.

Bring on the Blues!

It sounds like some of my neighbours are celebrating the Saints great win tonight with some doof doof house club music.

This has been going on since before half time though so I don't think they are Saints fans, I wish they would knock it off.

He is a great coach, especially when it comes to the gameday coaching with the way he can turn around a game like tonight.

You could see it in his presser where he talked about shutting down their threats and creating our own threats after half time.

Brett Ratten couldn't have done that, Ratts could have given our players a rev up at half time but he isn't as sharp tactically.

There is a reason opposition coaches hate playing against Ross Lyon coached teams, he gave Chris Scott another lesson tonight.

I know we may have hurt our draft order, but listening to the arrogance of the cat fans tonight really made the win worth it.

Proud supporter tonight.
Play like the second half and with the kids developing, 6 and 7 instead of 4 and 5 foesn't seem as bad.
Lalor, Langford,Reid and a Slider out of Draper or FoS and we still get quality kids

I know what you're saying, but wtf, we're surely all in on the bastard. So, from my pov, he can have as much space as he wants. If he doesn't get us to the holy grail what's different to the last 58 years?

FOS, Draper, Smith, Trainor, Smillie, Langford, Lalor - likely top 7. I'm pretty sure FOS & Draper won't slide which is a major bummer, hopefully someone grabs Trainor. Leaves two of Langford, Lalor & Smillie. Two potential guns there, but we could end up being the land of the midfield giants with the 2 draftees, Owens & Pou. Is that too big without enough explosive zippy mids?

this was always the thing to be wary of if it's true

If its true, I would agree,

Another fantastic win. I have been fairly vocal about how I think we are better than our record suggests and that the boys knew that, this win is just further proof and will instill belief in the side heading into next year.

The second half of the season form is a glass half full situation, because you start wondering what we could've done if we jagged a few of the close losses early in the year, but at the same time we are putting the pieces in place for the future by not giving up and shutting up shop which would have been the easy way out.

Credit has to go to the coaching staff for keeping the squad focused and committed to competing with nothing to play for. These games will be crucial for the continued improvement of Owens, Sharman, NAS, Wilson etc who are gaining far more from this than getting blown out with a side that has one eye on Europe holidays.

If you can't make finals, the next best thing is to be the boogeyman side that causes chaos, and we are certainly doing that at the moment, with the opportunity to possibly knock Carlton out of the finals next week. Don't care how petty it is, having this as a possibility is so exciting and hilarious.

That was Steele's best game in some time. Great to see him working hard to get involved in the chain of play rather than just at the contest, when he is doing both he is one of the best midfielders in the comp.
