Autopsy Round 24, 2023: Brisbane v St.Kilda

Solid pre finals hitout. The scoreboard ended up being a fair representation of the game IMO - Lions should have converted more but they also got very favourable treatment from the umps. If a 50 was paid to Higgins when he was tackled to ground after taking a mark inside 50 it would have been a 6 point game with 1 minute left.

Nas was outstanding after having a bit of a shaky start with his kicks. Wilkie brilliant as always. Marshall huge. Thought Hill's ball use was bad. Byrnes very good when he came on. Both Hayes and Sharman struggled to get involved but Coops has the runs on the board so Hayes goes out for King.

Overall it was a decent effort considering we were up against a more experienced team with more talented players than we have. Throw King into the mix and we would've been a good chance of snagging the win.

Just a gap in class to the lions around the ball and forward of centre.

Not too disappointed though because our system stands up and our young kids look good.

A few unlucky missed frees inside our 50 and a couple of inexperienced mistakes inside 50 where we managed to make what should have been a shot on goal into a turnover.

I think in a real final we would have been a lot more conservative with player positions and it looks like we kept some cards close to our chest while still competing.

One thing that looks completely different is how many high risk kicks we are willing to take up the middle recently. We are taking the opposition on and not playing safe.

Not just silk though because that underrates how much he wins his own ball in tight. He's a very very good player. Probably the best impact of any young player since our golden generation. At this rate he'll be our best player by his mid 20s. For impact per possession they don't come much better.
Second efforts have improved dramatically as well as his confidence that he can run past/ around anyone. His delivery is pure class.

Might be neither of them.

It wouldn't surprise me to see King, Membrey and Caminiti.

Overall a solid performance - just got trapped in the Lions forward half to much.

When we got through we looked damaging. A few frustrating issues - but overall not overawed.
I'd take Sharman over Caminiti.
Hayes didn't do enough to keep his spot, though

Seems like Sharman must have had the best 5 possession game ever.

I thought he was very poor today.

I don't think he was outstanding but he wasn't poor. He was getting into the action even if his possession count wasn't high.

Agreed. I really liked some of those aggressive kicks down the middle.

To me Sharman offers something different to the true KPs. Hayes probably goes out after Membrey stepping up. If Ross is fit HC goes out Byrnes to sub.
That’ll probably be the best team we have.

No he was poor.

Its a dilemma for the selectors. King and Membrey are locks, but none of the other three pick themselves.

A few more games and I think Hayes would be the one but he's underdone.

Just have a sneaky feeling that Caminiti might be a finals player.

I think we tried a fair bit of experimentation in that. Phillipou played plenty of time in the true mids and had guys like Stocker move up too. Sharman was moving a round a lot and then Hayes late. Steele seemed to be minding someone, probably Neale. Crouch and Owens were unusually fumbly under added pressure.
Hope Steele wasn’t minding Neale - he had it 30 times!

You know we did OK today when Brisbane supporters are getting shirty, they expected to flog us and they just escaped with a win with the umpires help.

They aren't as good as they think they are, we mixed it with them without King and they were full strength, I'm predicting another finals flop for them.
The bookies had us long underdogs and media types like Fox didn't give us a chance. 15-0 to the Lions in their tipping contest for what that's worth. The Lions are now 11 zip at the Gabba so realistically you had to be an optimist to give us a winning chance in a game that meant so much to the Lion's finals prospects.

The margin flattered us but I'm not unhappy with the outcome with Battle seeming like the only injury watch.

King, Ross, Billings, ahem.. Howard available so there's no reason why we can't give it our best shot.

I really would like Melbourne to set things right with the Swans ladder position though at least from our point of view. We deserve a home final over them no matter which way you look at it.

They could potentialy play hayes ,membrey, king and sharman allowing owens and phillipou to play more midfield minutes .

Wasn't as high impact as he has been still. He certainly wasn't hard tagging either way. If you pressure every touch 30 possessions can look better on paper than in actual impact. I didn't feel like any of their players really got hold of us. They had a lot more clearance than we did but especially in the second half we kept them under control.

Also looked the least rushed Pou has been. Scary to think what he and Chito could be at 50 games.
Pou should be in this year's draft but will have 25 games and two full preseasons under his belt R1 2024.

You're the number 2 Sharman hater behind cairnsman.

Was a hard day for forwards

A few people would rather hope that some players fail to save their credibility after deciding early that they were no good.

How? He didn't get heaps of ball but was certainly pressuring and running well. The only time I remember him doing something wrong was when he dropped an easy mark that he recovered from and pumped the ball forward that I'm pretty sure resulted in a goal. I remember him letting Membrey pick his pocket late when both went for one mark. Other than that I though he looked like he worked hard and provided options.

Phillipou didn't look like he had much impact on paper either but stats don't show the full picture. Caminiti looks too much like the others to me. Sharman can play as a defensive forward which gives him an edge.
