Autopsy Round 3, 2024: Essendon v St.Kilda

I think we have the right system and game plan in place but we need to have our best chess pieces on the board to make it work.

King was the biggest piece we missed today but we also missed Henry, Wood, Crouch, Webster, Howard and maybe Dow, Clark and Hayes.

If we can get all of our best chess pieces on the board, it's checkmate.

Anyone missing Dougal yet?

Dougall spoils. Webster spoils. Cordy tries to mark, and is not that good at it.

I would play Dougall in front of Cordy. Which is not to say that Cordy does not have issues, but overall he is a better FB. Just never let him kick in.

too many injuries at the club and most of them are fairly long term . Very hard on young kids coming through . At least we get King back next week but i dont think anyone else will be available.

Hopefully some of the players today pull their finger out, should require to bring their mouth guards to training. Dow back soon hopefully but he’ll be underdone. Our midfield remains weakest point

Question has to be asked about Butler . Plays one good game then unsighted for 5 or more games. I know he was probably underdone this week coming back from injury but im talking more about last year .

Those guys are barely even noticeable at VFL level.
We'll never know the answer, but i think your wrong.
  • Garcia had 16 touches, 14 tackles and kicked a goal.
  • Arie had 33 touches, 13 marks
  • Hastie had 17 touches and a goal.
  • Collard was quiet, I've considered that he'll be a lesser player in the VFL compared to AFL - but yeah, very quiet.

Either way, these guys are very noticeable.

Butler had 8 touches, 8 tackles and a goal.

Look, I may well be wrong and it's easy for me to say I told you so in a scenario where we'll never know how the alternative will pan out. I'm just frustrated and expected more, after such a great summer, we are suddenly 3 rounds in, lost 2 gettable ones with a list as long as my arm of unavailable or underdone players.

I’ll tell you what hurts….
and that’s coming home and finding the other half, a Bombers supporter, watching the last half 🤮
( no we don’t watch the games together.)
Fk me.
Ouch, that is just malicious behaviour from your other half. Cruelty and psychological trauma, in what is a RAW and emotional time for all of us, shouldn't be tolerated.

After his supposedly impressive off season I asked my Port supporter mate why he got delisted. His response was straight to the point "he's weak as f**king piss and turns to over with any pressure". Besides that courageous mark he took I think third quarter, pretty much everything else today confirmed those comments

he just looks inside his own head too much of the time. I wonder how much being delisted by port has actually impacted him. It was always going to be difficult for Windy to back up last week’s performance, but he should rebound quickly

None of them play the role we asked Butler to play.

Yes he was underdone but given we needed to replace someone playing at half forward, he was the best choice.

Three quarters of our team were poor today.

Roma could have been BOG, but butchered the ball all game.

If there was one piece of play that summed up our game, it was Roma's Banana Kick at goal. Since when he is a Banana Kick Maestro?

He should have just good back and slotted it like normal.

That bit of play was what three quarters of our team just dished up all night. Poor decisions, poor execution, fumbles and general lack of team play. It was like they were all out for a lark.

Absolutely agree about Roma. It was one of his more sloppier performances that I can recall, in a game where moments and 1:1 contests were critical to get us over the line. That said, he’s been one of our more consistent performances, particularly when it’s been on the line

Also, how many kids can we really play at once?
Wilson, Hastie - will he get another go?
Not sure we can bring in a third for a now - must win game.
Hopefully Butler better for the run next week.

What we saw was a young side play inconsistent as Lyon said post game if you want to be Enright or Harvey then it’s about how you play good 4 out of 5 weeks
Windhager - gun last week…so so this
Owens - good for half
Pou - good for a half
Membrey types disappoint but you can see why we got beaten round ball with young guys in there

He would be elite if he was a little bit smarter and more composed. Guess that's why he was a rookie pick!

Oh boy, have I seen this movie before over all the years I've followed the Saints. The two clubs I dislike the most are Geelong and Essendon (yep not Collingwood). Despite a few wins against them in recent seasons they both seem to hold the wood over us. So what's happened so far. Two close losses to the Cats and the Injectors in the first three rounds. Both winnable games late.

You could've won a fortune over the years, especially since the Sheedy coached days of backing Essendon against us. With no stats to back it up i I'd say the last 30 times they've beaten us, we've started favorites in 20 of them.

I'd sooner lose to North than those pricks.

For what it's worth I reckon we win today if Ming plays. They could've had Wright play. IMO King was more important to us. If Wright didn't get reported I also reckon King would've won his appeal.

Looks like another year bemoaning injuries and tribunal crap. I've seen that movie too many times before also.

King wasn't much consequence, because his replacement, Hammer, was one of the few who can hold his head up.

You’re better than this

Takefusa Kubo and Kyogo Furuhashi know how to score goals well in another code so not sure what you're on about champ.

Nothing to do with race guys, take it easy, clumsy point maybe. Was just saying he looks so bloody natural with every other part of his game, but when he takes a shot for goal it looks like he grew up over here in Japan and picked it up late. It's a mystery.
Of course Japanese people are great at sports they're familiar with, etc. etc.
My kids are half Japanese by the way, so I have a special affection for Mitch.
