Review Round 4, 2023 vs Sydney

I lust finished watching the replay and I had forgotten to mention Butters and Rozee in my original post, both of them worked their backsides off last night.

I had mentioned JHF, and it's sometimes easy to miss some of the stuff that happens in the emotion of watching a game live, but the strength through the core that he has at only 19 is something to behold.

I’m not sure there is anyone - including Ken that actually thinks he will be coaching next year barring a flag (regardless of public messaging), and I think that has been the case since before the season.
Yup, so I’m going to enjoy the wins!

So who got Wingard vibes after Rozee's kick at the end to only Sydney players in the backline.
Haha, not quite as stupid a kick though. Fair enough to kick to an empty forward pocket with 30 seconds left.
Wingard kicked into the corridor!

Someone send it to David King. If he's going to pot the club we may as well use him

"All these Swans players running free in the final minute, and there's one glaring question here for me. Why wasn't Horne-Francis manning all three of them up?"

Lol Swans at the death.
Mills runs away from the goal to celebrate.
Buddy did SFA all night, then falls over in the square, so that Ladhams ends up in a 1 on 3 against three Port talls.
Alliir comes in uncontested and makes the game winning spoil.

Thought the Swanettes butchered a heap of chances all night.
Port made the most of their opp's and ended up winning.

Doubt the Sydneysiders an make the 8 this year! Buddy is worse than Jonas these days.
Poor Paddy Mac may have to give it away after another concussion.
Rampe and Parker are past their best.
Heeney down on form.

Take every win we can, but I've seen too many false dawns to get over excited any more.

Waiting for us to flop against the Dogs this week as per the normal script.

Why is it that when we loose a close one we are not good enough yet when we win a close one it is a fluke/

I want Hinkley gone as much as you but I am not going to talk down a good come from behind effort.

That was a good win, savor the moment, they do not come around that often.
A come from behind win with the oppo two defenderz sidelined
Not hanging any hope on this win
Slenderest of marginz in the Nick of time. Excuse me for not “celebrating “ that

Elated to win and to win a close game. Sydney still managed to get the last kick for goal and had lost two talls during the match. Good to see our younger mids have an influence on the win. Huge game from Aliir. We need another big influential tall though.

True, but Todd's whole season has been hot then cold, it is not just last night. This season Todd has booted 8 goals with 4 of those coming against Brisbane in round 1. He also took 8 of his season's 16 marks against Brisbane.

I reckon Todd was playing in defence at one stage last night. I am not sure if he was told to go back into defence or simply went looking for a kick.

Hopefully this week Todd will find his goal kicking mojo.
Todd went back in the last minute and a bit to flood their forward line. Todd was lead to the ball last night. Once he corrects that his form will turn around.

Wingard skied it and broke charlies leg lmao

There's something absolutely fantastic about seeing a bloke who clearly hasn't been raised in Aussie be so passionate about the game too.

I agree…

What made me laugh last night was it was like the commentators had never seen us play before.

they kept saying we are butchering the ball inside 50, that last kick is letting them down..wow like it was something they had just discovered. Do these commentators actually watch any football outside of Victoria.
They have no idea about how we play or how our individuals play. They also fail to comprehend that a team that flogged Richmond in the 2014 EF went on to win zero flags (0 GF appearances) & Richmond went on to win 3, WB who finished 14th went on to win 1 (2 GFs), Dees who finished 17th went on to win 1, WC who finished 9th went on to win 1 (2 GFs), GWS who finished 16th went on to play in 1 GF, Collingwood who finished 11th went on to play in 1 GF & the Crows who finished 10th went on to play in 1 GF - WHY IS THIS SO & WHY HAVE WE ACCEPTED THIS TOTAL LACK OF SUCCESS?

The team won on emotion vs Sydney. The issue is that playing on emotion is not sustainable across the course of a season. Successful teams are well drilled and have a clear game plan - they don’t rely on emotion to perform well.

There will be plenty of ‘what happen powa’ moments this season because the teams game plan is a cluster **** and they are led by a former used car salesman

It’s okay to win ugly at times, but they are an anomaly. Our overall system is still too inherently flawed & disjointed. Main takeaways from the game:

  • Ruck & clearance work will continue to be a major Achilles Heel until we find an alternative to Lycett. We simply don’t win if Dixon wasn’t sent in to take over Ruck duties in the last. Are we better off rotating Dixon & Finlayson through the ruck?
No matter their deficits, I just don't believe that Hayes or Visentini would offer less than Lycett on current form. The fact that Scott isn't gonna be playing much longer makes holding them out even more baffling.

Exactly my thoughts. They can't keep playing to save Kens job. The emotional output required is not sustainable.

I said a couple of weeks ago hang on tight it's going to be a hell of a ride until Hinkleys gone and then for a while after. Given the situation there are going to be some real highs and some damn deep lows. More to come I think.

Good to get a win in a close one Some positives with Charlie wanting to win the ruck so badly at the end , Dyls doing some good stuff. Jez kicking it when he did , JHF's strength and Alir dominating what he does well.

If only the club could see beyond the cult of Ken listen, and acknowledge the issues we have.

Our defensive structure is incredibly poor. We play a game based on total team defence without the talent and consistent intent to do it and it feeds into our forward entries. Players look lost defensively and when it doesn't work we look embarrassingly bad.

Agree or disagree with Tredders he raised points that need to be addressed or will fester until they are.

Key club figures response this week will say a lot about them in my opinion. Easy to go fu haters and continue on your way but that doesn't solve legitimate long term issues.

Club is starting to eat itself on a lot of levels. Hurts to watch and unfortunately think it might get worse before it settles .

Would have been nice to see that sort of passion for something against the hawks last year.

As enjoyable as that win was on face value...ffs, what the * happened to our structure in the last minute? How does Heeney get 30m on his own in the corridor and how does Florent get 30m on his own inside 50? Where was everyone?

This happens at SANFL level as well. There is a clear flaw in our teams shape where there is a massive hole in the defensive side of the corridor.

Sometimes when the oppo is in their back 50, we don’t try to lock them in enough, then they stroll out and kick it up the ground and if it spills out the back of a pack to an oppo player, we are stuffed.
