Autopsy Round 4: Hawks survive a massive scare vs Roos

Nice like farm.
Not so much taking the foot off the pedal, as not realising we were playing by a different set of rules. When one team thinks holding/dropping the ball in a tackle with prior opportunity is a free kick and the other team knows it isn't, there is a disparity which causes what happened last night.

Good win guys, we were never in it. We only came back at the end cos youse took the foot off the pedal.
Good luck for the rest of the season :thumbsu:

What a strange old match, in complete control with 8 mins left with North looking like they can barely score, then the umps bend over backwards and turn themselves inside out giving all the momentum back to norf and we nearly lose.

All in all 3-1 and 4th place is a great start after 4 rounds.

Chad Wingard is a star.

Flicked over to the North board, there's actually posters there with the audacity to whinge about the umpires in that game.
They have to be taking the piss surely? They got the absolute world all night and free reign to just dispose of the ball anyway they pleased.
They really do have the biggest victim mentality complex there of all time. It's really quite pitiful.

Have you seen the Essendon posters on Bigfooty? Clearly not. 🤣

And in near perfect timing the AFL posts the highlight package so I can chuck a clip of the tackle in here

The ferocity and intensity of this tackle! Polec doesn't even get a second to think before Stratton's got him. Brilliant tackling and really set the mark for how we'd play for most of the game

Hey Sarah, Loved that tackle but it was young Curtis Taylor, not Polec.

Was this the incident where a Kanagaroo almost steps on Sicily after a scuffle? BJK#5 any chance of getting an extended version of this moment? I'd like to see it again, because at the time we all went off our nuts at the bloke trying to 'stomp' on Sic, but there was nada from the Foxtel team. If it had have been Sicily doing the stomping I'm sure they would have been all over it.

Gotta say, Clarkos presser was spot bloody on.

Give it a listen if you havent: https://www.afl.com.au/video/459276...hFrom=1593344127001&references=AFL_MATCH:2047

Clarko spot on. I struggle to watch any non Hawks games now as the game just isn't officiated as it should be. Not always the umpires fault, as they have their instructions, but as Clarko said "we have a rule book, perhaps we just need to start by officiating to it".

Still fuming about the 'contact below the knees' free paid against Mitchell late in the game that led to a North goal. It's not a once off, it happens way too frequently.

That rule was brought in specifically to penalise players who would WRECKLESSLY SLIDE INTO LEGS. It's not there to reward clumsy players who couldn't be arsed going for the ball and instead stumble a bit after incidental contact is made by a player actually playing the game, going for the ball in a perfectly fair and reasonable manner.

No feel for the game, and no common sense applied.

The HTB's not paid were bad enough, but how much holding did the Kangaroos, particularly Robbie Tarant, get away with. Mitch Lewis could have had several shots from 10-15 metres out if even half the holds were paid.

Smith gets his arms chopped, only reason he dropped that mark right in front. Yet, Curtis Taylor gets paid a mark when the ball hit the deck without having had control on the way to ground.

We have such a great game, yet we have such a horrible product at the current point in time!

Flogged in every key stat, did not deserve to win. Midfielders embarrassed by a 2nd rate oppo with their best player not playing, Ceglar giving away stupid free kicks and getting his arse handed to him all game and our complete lack of leadership the last 7 mins was a real concern.

If not for James Sicily and our elite pressure for 3 quarters then we don’t win.

Midfield has plenty of issues, plenty.
We won the bounces 4 to 2

Yeah I had a go at the roosresurgence dickhead saying we got the rub of the green, prick

On the plus side, 6 more wins and we probably play finals. Bank the points & move on.

On the negative, while the endeavor is there, our disposal by foot is poor. The best of the Hawthorn brand has always included team’s with elite foot skills. Can we work on that during training please?

One stat that mattered
Free kick 21 north - 12 hawks (many holding the ball not given)
Why are so many free kicks to Goldstein?
The frees that Cegler gave were poor positioning, Goldstein out maneuvered him and kept doing all game. Cegler continued to start behind and a lot instances was body odour smarted

I've been right behind Stratts as captain, knowing what he brings to the club, particularly behind the scenes which is rated very highly internally.

But on field, you can't help but feel that there is a massive hole in this regard. It's not just the role of "captain" it's the entire leadership group. There just seems to be no one really stepping up here. What happened yesterday would never have happened with Hodge / Mitch / Lewis in the team. You just wonder where those next leaders are going to come from. People are suggesting Jags, but was completely awol when the game needed to be saved. It's a worry.

This is true but unless you're an instinctive leader, leadership takes time to develop - the only natural 'shouter' we have out there is Sicily. Burgers is a good organiser as well but he has to focus on his game these days. Give it time and they'll get there.

Mitch Lewis he didn't try to tackle, going for bumps, question is he still got an issue with shoulder?

Hey mate, just thought I'd pop over from the North board to see what you blokes were saying about the game. I think the general consensus is that the umpiring was pretty poor for both teams. A lot of calls missed for both teams and a lot of dodgy ones called.

But you can't be serious when you say we got the absolute world all night. If you take away the 6 frees against Ceglar (all of which were there. Ceglar was assaulting Goldstein all night, he was lucky he didn't give away 10) the count was 15-12 our way. Pretty even. For all the incorrect disposals which weren't called on us, and yes, there were a few, you blokes had a bunch of illegal shepherds and blocks off the ball. Clarko seems to have mastered the technique of doing illegal things off the ball without getting called on it by the umps.

It's disingenuous to claim that the entire North board has a victim complex. The real issue here is the umpiring and the rules. There have been so many complications, so many rule changes, so many little tweaks, that the umpires' job has pretty much become impossible. The game is in an awful state atm, and I fully agree with Clarko's sentiments during his presser.

And before you go off at me for being a whinging prick, we didn't deserve to win. You can't play like dogshit for three and a half quarters and expect to come away with the win. Congrats, you blokes deserved it, but our 'victim mentality' is not the issue here. It's the game, it's the umpiring, and it's the rules. And until some massive overhauls are made, we're gonna keep seeing shitshows like last night.

Thought I might have been the only one to notice this, almost copped a stomp to his head. No one said a word about it though.

Remove 6 frees and it's pretty even? Imagine that. Well if you just arbitrarily remove all the frees we received it was 22 to 0, how uneven is that! Absolutely appalling from the umps there.

It looked bad and intentional live, but because it wasn't replayed perhaps it wasn't as bad as it looked? Would love to see it again to re-assess. Can't even say who it was, think maybe Xerri?

Goldy is a great player but he also held onto ceglar at every stoppage and sucked the umpire in. Let’s not pretend it was evil ceglar v saintly Goldstein. It was normal ruckman behaviour adjudicated like it was extreme and to the benefit of one team.

I kept having flashbacks to the 2015 Prelim against Port. Nightmare stuff.
Only lasted a half against Geelong. Faded in the last quarter against Richmond. Faded again but lasted until midway through the last quarter against North. Lets hope we can run out the entire 4 quarters next week.
Umpiring in general has been very poor all year. Have a look at the free against Eddy Betts and then on top of that a 90 metre penalty given.
