Review Round 4 vs Carlton

We've cooked it at the selection table lads. Looking like you'll be way to fast on the ground for us.
Yes, I don't really understand Carlton selection. Probably hoping to dominate midfield and marking forward. Weller is a big loss but Ainsworth is a quality replacement. If Suns can split contest in midfield, our small forwards will cause you some headaches. Also with limited forward pressure, Suns should dominate run out of defence.

If Cripps rips us open in the middle we will be ****ed. McKay, Curnow and McGovern are all fantastic contested marks. We need to pressure the ball carrier so that they don’t have clean entry into there forward line. This will be won out of the middle

Got a feeling Burgess going to move back to help out Collins , Hombsch, Ballard , with Weller out GCS is underdog again .

Im probably the only one, but I 100% don't agree with Ainsworth coming straight back into the ones. that spot should go to the best performed like for like in the twos last week. only the top 5-8 players in the team should be coming straight back, and Ainsworth definitely isn't in that territory yet (though he very likely will be in the future)
Wouldn't be surprised if he has a shocker.

Every game is usually won in the middle. No secrets there.

I don't think Carlton's midfield is as good as Dogs, not even close. Except Cripps I don't see any A grader at the moment. Way too young as ours. Quietly confident we can split midfield.
Cripps makes the midfield better then they are. His ability to get the hard ball and clear congestion and find someone on the outside could cause problems. Walsh, Dow and SPS are all quick and use the ball well. It’s gonna be a good game, they match up very well with us

Bowes and Fiorini have a job ahead of them but I'm confident they'll give it a good crack!

What are your opinions on Bowes and Fiorini?

I really do think this is a big game for us because it's arguably the first one of the year that we're expected to win and in the past we've faltered under these conditions. I'm confident this year is different and we're going to turn a new leaf against the Blues on Sunday!

I'd say I don't really have a strong grasp on how I feel about those boys yet, but I'll give you my two cents from the 3 matches I've watched.

I really like Bowes. He's able to play a multitude of positions and seems to move well and get into good spots.
In the Doggies game last week he drifted into defense multiple times in crucial stages late and I think that speaks volume of both his work-rate and talent.

He kinda reminds me of Jack Silvagni, but I think he's a little more naturally gifted than Jack.
I'm hoping Jack becomes a great utility player who can play any line for the Blues, and I feel Bowes is already doing that for the Suns :)

Fiorini works really hard and is always a valuable link up player, but I haven't really seen him do anything that's really wowed me.
In saying that he's definitely a solid contributor and I wouldn't even think about dropping him unless there's some really big results coming from someone in the 2s.

Of course I could be completely reading it wrong, so feel free to inform me otherwise :)

Weller is a big out! Has been providing a lot of good drive out of the back half.
Hopefully Harbrow can pick up the slack.

In regards to my thoughts on the midfield match up, well it's an interesting one.

I think we're (Carlton) a good chance to win at the coldface IF (and this is a pretty big if), one or two of SPS, Dow or Fisher have good games.
This is far from a given (they all played pretty average last week against Sydney), but when they're firing they really provide great support to Cripps and (critically) good entry into F50 after the clearance.

Cripps will be Cripps and if left unchecked he can be the catalyst, but he can't do it alone. The other kids are too inconsistent at this stage and struggle to put 4 quarters in.

Suns mids will have more flair and bigger bodies overall, which will lead to progressive midfield gains if the Blues can't rise to match their level.

However I think we also need to take a look at the rucks... Lobbe is our third choice to ruck (behind both Kreuzer and Phillips) and I think Witts will be able to have a bigger influence on the game due to this.

It's going to be such a strange feeling watching the game on Sunday... don't think I'll experience a more foreign feeling watching a game of footy.
I'll probably grow to love these contests in time though, if I don't immediately.

Happy to see Ainsworth was selected. I think we'll be better with him, even if he's a little underdone right now.

Wittsy should beat Lobbe in most rucking contests but the problem we have is consistently securing hit outs to advantage. Witts can get very predictable in the ruck (he almost always lightly taps the ball after a centre bounce) and once opposition mids start taking advantage of where he's tapping the ball, we're in trouble because we lose the clearances battle, despite heavily winning the hit outs. I just hope this doesn't cost us tomorrow.

First game im heading to this year. Really hope we dont pull a classic suns and fail when we should win. I think there is a different feel to this group but we have all seen this before.

I think Ainsworth is a massive in, and should provide some spark alongside Sexton up forward (as long as he isnt underdone!). I think the game will be won or lost in Carlton's forward line. When a team loads up with that many bigs, they either dominate the air because we dont have enough tall defenders or it allows guys like Harbrow to run out of the backline unchecked and sets us up all day.

Certainly not attempting to get ahead of myself here but are people aware that a win tomorrow would constitute the best start to a season we've ever had? We have never started a season 3-1 before. This is a big deal if we're able to win it!

It’s as rare as hens teeth that both GC Teams win on the same weekend. I think it last occurred in 2017 sometime.
We have a few curses to overcome tomorrow.
Carlton seem to beat us at home regularly.
We seem to fail whenever it’s a big opportunity at home.
Best ever start to a season.
Cockiness creeping in on our board (such as looking ahead).
The Double GC.

I’m very wary.

Carlton talent and Experience on paper should win this match .GCS don't expect to win a match this year by Vic media anyway,

No offence but Bowes is very different and a much better player than Silvagni.

I'm scared every week due to past experiences following this team haha.
I’m scared but I’m confident we can win - I know bods is worried about cockiness, but we should be allowed to be proud of our boys and expect us to win.

As always, we should treat the expectation the same as the players do - be confident but not complacent

Started 2016 3-0 but then lost to Brisbane in round 4 to make it 3-1 (when May knocked out Martin)
