Autopsy Round 5, 2022: St.Kilda v Gold Coast

He and DMac are both great examples of players who have learned to play within their skill set, and are succeeding through simplicity.

Not everybody needs to be a highlight reel superstar.
Do the simple things right and have that as a baseline standard, and the good things become easier to control. Once you can maintain and control the good things, the odd highlight will come your way through confidence, will, execution...and law of averages.

I think Hayes is going to be this year's dilemma, a bit like Battle has been previously. He's talented enough to be best 22 but finding his best position structure wise is going to be difficult. That's with a fit group of talls to pick from of course.

Very mature win. Impressed we didn’t go to water after a promising start like in the past.

I can feel the vibes too but I won’t get ahead of myself just yet..

Hope King/Hill are okay after little niggles

Higgins was immense :thumbsu:

Fit and healthy Paddy every day of the week and twice on Sundays, but Hayes is very very solid backup.

Does Hayes really need to compete with Ryder and Marshall? To me, it's between him and Wood and if we can only field one, then i am backing Hayes in every time. I do like what Wood has produced this year though.

Our midfield was good again today, Ross and Crouch with Gresham, Sinclair and DMac all chipping in as well are helping to take the load off Steele.

When we get Jones, Clark and Billings back it will help to spread the load even more, they can't tag them all, tag Steele and the others get off the chain.

Hill as well, when he is a free agent up forward, down back and in the midfield, look out.
If fully fit, I am struggling to see who Billings replaces. Jones for Windhager, Clark for Wood.

The next one of the rank would be NWM. Think I would possibly rather NWM in the side. Not a better player, but possobly better for team balance It's line ball. Jack needs to pull his finger out.

Mark McClure's votes were:
3-Steele - for his competitive leadership, contested possessions, etc
2-Higgins - 5 goals and hard work running, contests etc
1- Marshall - sheer competitive grunt, smarts, tackles and positioning

He is a big wrap for our contested footy and that the team looks and plays like a happy bunch. "Culture always beats strategy" he claims and we've all seen enough footy to know how true that is.

That's why I'm excited. We are playing mature, hard, smart footy. Sharing the load with the weapons to do it!

Actually both are quite skilful players but yes I know what you mean they‘ve taken out the high risk football and replaced it with solid high percentage football.

Ratten has often talked about percentages of playing on vs stopping after a mark, and the need to find the right balance. Fans obviously don't get access to those types of stats (frustratingly), but I'd bet that McKenzie would be pretty close to bang on for what they're after. He seems to have great judgement as to whether to stop and slow things down, or go quickly and open the ground up. Has become one of the players I feel more safe with when he has ball in hand.

Just back from the game.

I thought it was umpired horrendously. Might sound a bit pissy, but reward the ****ing tackler. The whole game was umpired with a cork up its arse. Makes it very frustrating.

Had them at arms length. Wasteful in front of goal early and really it should have been busted open by the half. Looking at the stats, it was a very even spread by the midfield.

I thought Dmac was excellent. He has absolutely cemented his spot. Quality, dependable. Wins his contests.
Longy was awesome. Same deal, do the simple stuff. He smashed a bloke in the third quarter, but did it clean. Excellent game going to the backline to do a job.

Four on the trot.

MOMENTUM.

Keep on rolling lads.

How’s that for some lovely balance! Very professional win

Miller also had the most contested possessions, (16) but clearly needs help when Steele was on 14 and we also had Ross, Hayes, Crouch, Gresham and McKenzie winning more contested possessions than any other Suns.

Last week Gold Coast won the clearances by 16 against Carlton and today we walloped them by 18, despite losing Paddy! Amazing.

And we might be able to add Jones in there as soon as next week!

Credit to Crouch in this area, averaging 7.2 clearances a game. A number of times today he was surrounded which didn't record a stat but stopped GC recording a clearance. This years Crouch has a found a gear and then some on last years.

Mature win. We look better than I could have imagined.

Higgins best on, Sinclair his usual awesome self and McKenzie's work rate is absolutely epic. Has become a genuine gun.
McKenzie was great. No more dear in headlights. He has matured alot. I am glad in the end the Saints gave him a 4 year deal last time it took 2 years to get him good. Last year and this year so far , he has been in some of the better players.

To all the experts in the media, and to the thread on the main board,

If this is what "no mans land" is, then never let us leave. The lid is firmly on, don't get me wrong. But Jesus Christ, you'd think our list was unsalvageable before round 1.

That thread was started a year ago I think on the night we got annihilated by WB by 100+.

Billings at his best is in our best 22 but I'd like to keep NWM in our side too, I'd be dropping Wood for Billings rather than NWM.

Not that Wood really deserves to be dropped either, I thought he was OK today after a poor start and he has versatility to play different positions.

Good to have competition for spots though, when Billings, Clark, Jones and Paddy are ready to go spots are going to be hot, perform or get dropped.

Very difficult to predict the team for next week with some of the more obvious choices having great games, but if Max is hurt and Jones and Webster are ready to go then…

OUT: King (inj.) Windhager Byrnes
IN: Jones Webster Campbell

B: Webster - Howard - Wilkie
HB: Long - Battle - Sinclair
C: Wood - Gresham - Hill
HF: Crouch - Membrey - Butler
F: Higgins - Hayes - Campbell
Foll: Marshall Steele Ross

Int: Jones Paton Wanganeen-Milera Lienert

You’ve left out McKenzie
